So I picked up a new project now that the Exploder is finished and up for sale. This time I went a completely different route and bought a bike. No, not the kind I have to wear faggy little spanks to ride but a REAL bike. ;)

Shes a classic XJ750 Seca with a boatload of miles I picked up for $200. Im told it "ran when parked" but thats pretty much all I know. Its been sitting since '04. If I get it running smoothly I plan to paint it black and then take it on a few short trips around Oregon to see if Im cut out to ride the longer stuff. Then I will flip it into a slightly bigger more mordern bike for my summer nomad trip.

Thats all for now, as all I had time to do was unload it yesterday and wipe off the dust and cobwebs, and take stock of whats there. Looks complete with a few extras including an R6 fuel injection unit.

Soooo, will it run? or am I going to be parting it out? that is to be determined.

Its an '83. It came factory with the fairing and a pair of hard saddlebags and a truck/backrest. Sort of the precurser to modern sport touring bikes. Its a bit of a puzzle right now with lots of extra pieces in boxes, but I like puzzles.

I got it started today, but it doesnt run real good. Backfiring and doesnt seem to want to idle. Tomorrow I will pull the carbs apart and check the ignition system out a little better.

Yamaha water based carb soak. Two parts water to one part soak. Amazing stuff. Worth the wait to get it.

I read something about boiling the parts on lemon juice. Supposed to do a good job as well.

Captain knows his shit when it comes to bikes. I wouldnt second guess him. Hes also a bona fide cheapass if he can be, so if he doesnt cheap out on something for something else, theres a reason for it.

lol, well if I had a yamaha dealer in my area I would try it.

Before taking the carbs apart I checked for shaft seal leakage with WD40 and sure enough found massive vac leaks. I completely dismantled the carbs and beside being generally dirty I did find one emulsion tube that was quite plugged up and several of the jets looked suspicious as well. The shaft seals actually looked and felt fine, not all dried out. I decided to soak them in transmission stop leak overnight and am going to pack the seal location with silicone grease and see if that does the job. If not I'll just order new seals.

I think Im going to want to repack the mufflers on this thing though. Im not a fan of loud bikes.

Cap, have you ever rebuilt a set of these "anti-dive" forks? Im going to need to at least service them and put new seals in but Ive never actually done a set of forks before. any advice would be great.

Never rebuilt the anti dive forks. I don't see why you just can't replace the fluid and seals. The fluid in there is probably like water in there. I use a little mineral spirits to flush out the last of it and let them hang inverted overnight. Fill and seal!

Yeah I just didnt know what was all involved in the anti-dive portion. They get a hydraulic line from the front brakes and mine are all disassembled. Ive read some suggestions that say ditch the cable actuated master and go with the master on the lever from a 550, and to ditch the antidive forks as well.

Its been so long since Ive even touched a bike Im still searching for information resources. There is a decent XJ forum so Im still digging through there looking for relevant info. I did manage to find a decent "owners service manual" online so I at least have some reference material, but you can never have to much hands on experience.

Yeah, that's tough. Anti dive stuff didn't last long. If there is a way to disable it, I would.

So, I found a write up on them and most guys say keep the antidive working, or swap the forks for non-antidive, but dont disable anti-dive on forks designed to use it. The system seems fairly straight forward and I will want to full recondition the forks anyway so Im just going to clean everything up and make it work. I may still however change the cable operated master cyl and go for a bar mounted arrangement. either way it all needs to come off and be flushed and filled and all that jazz anyway.

Yesterday I got the carbs boiled in Lemon juice. I have to say that I sort of expected it not to smell so bad, but the smell was this distinctly putrid metal smell. Better than stinking up the place with chemtool, but just barely.

I still could not quite clear one passage in the float bowls. All 4 bowls were plugged and even with chemtool it didnt want to clear, but persistence pays off and a combination if "twistie tie" wire, pipe cleaners, chemtool and compressed air finally cleared the passages. Other than that the job was tedious but pretty straight forward. The only real bad news was that these had been broken into before and the mixture screws tampered with. Unfortunately one of them was missing a tiny washer and o-ring. It wont affect the tuning but all the manuals say not to mess with the mixture screws at all in the first place. So I really have no idea what would and should be factory settings at this point. The other bad news is I dont believe all the shaft seals are going to work, so Im going to go ahead and order the missing o-ring and get all new shaft seals...and take these apart again when they come in. In the meantime Im gonna run these as is and see how they do.

If this gets me in the runability ballpark then I know Ive got something I can work with and I can move on to other items with the knowledge that my efforts wont be wasted on a dead bike.

So, now that I know the motor will at least run well enough to idle and sounds ok it was time to move on to "driveability" issues. The front half of this bike is so screwed up that I basically just decided to do a complete teardown and rebuild.

Things I discovered doing this:

The steering was borked. There was a factory installed dampner on it since it came with the heavy fairing and bags and it was in sad condition. I will remove it for now and try to rebuild it if possible later.

The old ball bearing setup was poorly maintained. instead of attempting a no cost fix with cleaning and repacking, Im considering a taper bearing upgrade.

The forks were NASTY. The fluid that came out was horrible. This thing would have been a death trap. Forks are getting a complete rebuild.

The front brakes were in an even WORSE state. I have 2.5 complete sets for this bike and it took all that to piece together a workable system. It still going to require some rebuilding but I managed (after HOURS of struggling) to at least get the calipers broken down for a rebuild and have two usable pistons, a decent master cyl, and more lines/fittings and hardware than I need.

I will be saving the Anti-dive feature. Its one of the few parts of this front end that wasnt totally trashed from neglect.

So after trying to clean, lube and reinstall the steering head I realize the races are just shot and will have to be replaced. So, I said F it and ordered taper bearings. There is a vendor on the XJBikes forum that stocks all the parts for these bikes (quite handy) so I went ahead and got everything I need to put this back on the road including some more carb parts, all the brake and front fork stuff I need and a new petcock (snicker). Under $200 shipped for everything, leaving me just $100 to paint it. Im debating "the $50 paint job" on it. Might be worth experimenting on.

However, before I do that Im going to outfit it for this: http://wastelandweekend.com/ and go MAX MAX on it. Stay tuned for plans on that.

not only will I not redo it even if it looks bad, the "$50 paint job" is applied with low VOC paint via rollers. Its about as earth friendly a paint job as I can do.

Besides, Im only earth friendly when it suits me, so sue me! ;)

Well phase two: Rideable. has been achieved. The anti-dive portion of the font forks was a bit of a nightmare just because it sat for so long. In fact the whole front brake setup was a bit of a struggle, but hard work paid off and I feel real good about the front half of the bike.

The taper bearing upgrade went well, and soon I had the forks back on.

it certainly does. its runs its little check proceedure every time you start it. Current faults are HEAD. TAIL, BATT, FUEL, because none of those things are hooked up.

Got the electrical done today.

I remounted the rear turn signals. They are mounted on some wider stalks from the factory to accomidate the hard panniers. I will not be reinstalling those so the sugnals looked retarded located way on the stalks

Then I went ahead and did some preliminary re-fitting of the fairings. They will need a little repair but I like how they look on the bike

I also managed to get a decent tune on the carbs. Enough to idle smoothly and drive decently. Im going to build a homemage manometer to sync the carbs, but I need to adjust the vlaves first.

Almost ready for tags and a decent road test though.

So I havent updated this in a while but I still have the bike and its coming along.

I modded the windscreen to deflect a little more air. I used the wrong glue but the end result was effective so Im not worried about it. I plan to change out windscreens down the road anyway.

so then I bought a paint gun and some decent paint and went to work on the rest of the change over. I still plan to redo the tank and side covers with new paint to match, but here she is as of tonight:

That isnt quite complete as the edge gets a stain black treatment, and I have some moulding to install on the outer seam of the fairing. Then I plan to put my Star Wars Empire logos on the bike and the tail will get a decal that emulates the stock one but will say "TWIN ION ENGINE-----------------------------TWIN ION ENGINE" that wraps around the tail light area.

Thats where I stand on it. The tank and side covers are in primer now and should be painted and buffed and installed before the weekend. Cosmetically about the only thing left after that is the front forks and brakes will need repainting.

ok well I finished the details on the painting today. You might not see the difference in the following photos but I did matched the satin edging on the fairing and lowers and side covers, then painted the forks and brakes, and finally painted the vinyl seat (yes painted it).

I quite pleased with the results overall. I will need to let everything dry for a bit longer and there is still alittle buffing and polishing to do, but its good enough to leave the cosmetics alone now at this point and move on to the last few nagging mechanical issues.
