Just bought a st165 from tspoon and I fell in love. I was wanting a st185 but with all the extra things that came with the car and price I couldn't resist. With every trac comes its problems.
-The fan is hardwired do the sensors/thermostat go out or even relays?
-Bushings and subframe mounts are going out. I am going to be ordering some from mario in a few weeks. Easy to do? any pointers?
-Clutch..my friend and I will be doing that so I think that should be ok.
-the sunroof does not sit flat? One of the rear sides of the sunroof sits up about a half inch. Any suggestions?

Other than that nice clean and should be a nice weekender compared to the daily integra. I will keep everyone updated with pics soon.

Congrats on making the purchase. It was a hell of a deal and surprised it stayed unsold for so long.

Tell me bout it?! but now comes the work and dedication to get this beauty up to tip shot shape..and what is funny is that tspoon lives literally 5min away from me

Alrighty first off I wanna thank Tspoon for the help. Just decided to do some minor things today particularly the brakes. Then a trim piece broke off :frown: i will take a pic of that later hopefully its an easy fix to find the clips to put it back on. Tried to fix the sunroof but thats for another day. Enjoy the pics I will keep everyone posted.

Alright now comes the major work. I know the clunking in the back is the diff mount but for the noise towards the front of the car sounded like road noise but tspoon thought it was a wheel bearing or something to do with stearing.( i will post a video soon) What does a car with a bad bearing sound like?

T-spoon
06-26-2011, 05:26 AM
I don't think it's a wheel bearing but I suppose it could be. It's been going on for way too long with no symptoms that I've ever seen. It does sound like something rotating, which is why I thought maybe something in the steering, or axles or something. Never heard a sound like it before though, so I dunno.

pingpong21

Have you ever pulled the engine or tranny? I might check things out when I replace the clutch. Sounds like an axle or something related.

Just gave her the car wash she needed but now to the things i might have a problem doing. here are two pictures, one i am missing the clips to hold on the frame/bezel/trim piece and idk where to get one or what i should do. secondly the sunroof has a "lift" only on one side and i cannot figure out why and plus it does not slide only tilts. Any ideas? Either way the clutch job and rear diff should be in the works within the next month  thats not gonna be fun. i will keep everyone posted

I would say hit a junkyard for the clips.

sunroof I have no clue on. May have to just start removing shit to get better eye's on the track for it.

T-spoon
07-13-2011, 11:41 PM
When I looked briefly at the sunroof before, the previous owner had clearly been trying to troubleshoot it cause it's not entirely back together.. but in any event, there seem to be little "arms" with rollers on them, and it looked like maybe they are supposed to clip into a groove or nest somehow. If that's true, it's possible the one on that side isn't in it's groove/slot/whathaveyou, but if so, you might have to take off the interior trim piece to get a better look because I couldn't see what the hangup was in its current condition. The clips are possibly still obtainable from Toyota, might check with Lithia Toyota (vendor forum).

First off I would like to say thank you to my friend Richard S. for welding the diff mount. Feels amazing :bananarider: Alright started the day with fixing boost leaks major MAJOR boost leaks. Anyone know besides at the stealership where i can get the rubber connector, connecting the intercooler to the throttle body? Lets get started with the pictures.

UP UP you go lol

http://i828.photobucket.com/albums/zz204/PingPong21/2011-08-24_17-13-15_521.jpg

**Note when putting a mount back on it is WAY WAY easier to bolt the mount onto the subframe first then the diff then bolt the diff back up. :amuse:

The goats decided to help

So amazing to have the back tight and no CLUNKS haha. If anyone wants it done my friend says he might be able to do them for a charge. Located in Gig harbor, wa or just pm me. Now i can boost and wont have to worry about the rear end falling out on me lol. Will keep you guys updated on other things.

For the TB-I/C coupler I'd check Lithia Toyota (yaknow, board vendor :) ). If you want to go aftermarket, I believe ATS has some options for a different setup there.

Great pickup. Body looks good and TC wheels are a nice touch, needs to be a little more flush with the fender for my liking but still looks good. If you ever decide to get rid of the fender gap and go lower I do have a set of B&G lowering springs 1.6 drop for sale, practically new. Good luck with project though. Keep us posted =)

jaydog82

i like the stock hood, but if i was going to mod a hood i would do a CS hood mod.
this is not me, just an example of the hood i like :) Man that looks like fun.

Since there's no difference between 165 and 162 hoods, just buy another (the one on there now is from a GT/GTS :P ) and practice cutting it up and make your own vent. The stock hood may look fine, but alltrac engine bays are way too hot to not be vented in any way.

Agreed lol When i get the time and money im sure thats what im going to do. Just cut a cool looking vent and mesh it kinda like an evos hood. cheap and simple but effective

Or remove the top mount and clean the inside of it. Plus put an insulator under the IC.

And have you checked the plugs to make sure they are still clean?

T-spoon
09-16-2011, 05:34 PM
Hmmm, don't know. Before the clutch started slipping it was doing 15psi every day... if you didn't change the clutch yet, it's probably slipping under boost.

I personally wouldn't recommend changing to a straight intake unless you're changing to a front mount, and in any case, I wouldn't do it unless you are going to fully enclose it and duct outside air to it. Otherwise I'm not sure you'd really see any improvement over the K&N dropin that's in there; especially in the summer.

Yeah sounds like a plan just gotta get the money and stuff for it.

I might do that in the mean time before i fmic it. and for the plugs i do not know dang. havent had time to check.

Yeah dang well its still grabbing for now so i bet im going to wait just depends. I dont have time and so you said you have had the "road noise" problem since you had the car? because everytime i turn the steering wheel to the right it gets worse did you know or figure out what it could be?

T-spoon
09-18-2011, 05:46 PM
Nope, I don't know what that noise is. My guesses are, in this order: something in the steering column or linkage to the rack; axle(s) (carrier?); wheel bearing. But I really don't know.

Lol haha true that it seems like its only on the right side and because i already have a wheel bearing im going to atleast consider that possibility. After that atleast now i can consider doing the body work. Dang what did you do to this car :( jkjk

Decided to fix the small problems in the alltrac today started with finding out the trac had the usual quarter window leak but that was easily fixed by taking it out and putting new sealant. Then on to the sunroof as everyone has read it wasn't fully closing on the back end but now sits flush. I did not know but read in the good ol toyota book that there are shims. Cleaned up the rim from it getting EXTREMELY dirty from the caliper seizing. Lastly checked the rust spots of these cars and everything seems pretty nice. Wanted to polish/wax the car but didn't have time. Pictures below hope you like them. Thanks

Finally had time this past saturday to go to my friends shop and replace the wheel bearing. I gotta say it was a pain 6 hours of work but way worth it. Bought a newer hub and knuckle and I had the bearing from Tspoon thanks. What was weird was the knuckle i got to replace the one on the car were a little different. bearing was different too. Seems like it was off a N/A car but went ahead and put a actual known Alltrac knuckle on and everything was ok. But the bearing was the culprit to why it was so noisy coming from the front of the car. I will let the pictures do the talking. Next now is truly the clutch.

Just checked my check engine light I have codes 43 which is starter. code 52 :/ knock sensor which sucks. Might be my problem. Then 54 which is my intercooler fluid is low. Gonna fix the knock sensor wire and hoepefully have my car out of safe mode.

I might have a knock sensor for it somewhere, although it wasn't throwing a code for it before. Joel had experience with them failing and I figured I'd pre-emptively replace the one in that car, but never got around to it. If I didn't give it to you already with other parts, I'll see if I can dig it up.

Started off getting my new BOV on the car but drove around and then these lights came on. ( check headlights/taillights, check battery, and brake light) all came on at the same time and looked it up seems like my alternator went out. thanks to the old owner richard i have the receipt for the lifetime warranty and changed it out no problem. Thanks funny thing was that it was the 3rd one in about 4 years they said and they were trying to get me to say something or do something because they seemed like they didnt wanna give me a new one :/

Thanks for that man!If its easier for you to make a draw, scheme or something its cool,i just need to know where the wires connect!

Hey this is for you so on mine there are 4 wires that need to connect to things. The main things are for me was one direct to the starter, one to ground and one to ignition. The other is for the LED light if you want it lit or not and i just connected it to the ignition too because it was easy but it is always on when the car is on so might just change it so it will come on til i start the car then turn back off. If you need a more detailed drawing or something just let me know.

Black- Ground
Red- Ignition
Red- Ignition( for the led light so connect it if you want the led on off or however you would please)
Blue(or maybe a different color but usually blue - Is direct to your starter

Got Klues rear subframe mounts and bushings and had a day off so i decided to pull my rear subframe and take the old 25 year old rubber ones out and put the nice shiny new ones in. Took about 8 hours by myself, I took it at a steady pace and got it done quicker and easier then I thought :chucklesfawk: . I could not POR 15 the subframe because the All-Trac is my daily. I PRESOAKED EVERYTHING IN WD-40 FOR 24 HOURS. I think this helped me out a bit.

Main Tools:
2 Floor jacks
2 Jack stands
Breaker bar
WD-40
Torch
Impact and sockets
Hammer
Grease

Did not know there was an "extra" bracket for the front subframe bolts/mounts

Well sad day, found a major coolant leak coming from the timing belt side so i am guessing it is the water pump. On top of that, hearing a loud tick coming from the head by cyl. 1. Still haven't fixed the oil leak either which I am pretty sure is from the oil cooler and oil filter bracket now. Car is sitting and I am really contemplating a 3rd gen swap, what do you guys think?

Shadowlife25

Gen 2 (st185) is way more straight forward, though a bit pricier. Benefit is everything is readily available and not difficult to source.
Gen 3 electronics are awesome from everything I have been told, so that is a definite pro, though sourcing things can definitely take some time.
Water pump and tb job is pretty straight forward. The ticking or knock could be a few things, so no telling until you crack it open.

Really all depends on you man.

Power steering hose was leaking like crazy so went ahead and got a replacement high pressure hose. Was not a bad job just time consuming but we all know about that with our All-Tracs. Another thing I started body work someone in front of my parents house hit the alltrac and run. :shoots: Stupid irresponsible people but I got a promotion into the body shop of the dealership i work at so I went ahead and fixed it and was going to paint the whole car this summer. Been a long time since I have posted anything. Been driving my daily a little more often, but thinking my radiator is going out and leaking. It is a green gold color on the top and I do not know if I just have a bad radiator or a head gasket leak. I have to fill up coolant ever once in a while any thoughts? Other then that still been contemplating getting a 3rd gen 3sgte from a st205 and swap it. Thanks in advance.

Dripping on the ground? What does the coolant look like? Pop off the oil cap as well and see if it looks milky in there. Quick checks anyway to look at the hg.

After boost it was flowing onto the ground. Couldn't find where it was coming from yet. It was just coolant on the ground the oil seems fine but my radiator coolant when I open the radiator cap it looks milky and stuff. :/

Hmm that sucks. Could be head gasket. I'd do a leakdown test, would tell you more. The leak may be related if it's coming out of the overflow reservoir. But figure out where it's coming from first

well check the oil nothing milky found that right beside my top radiator hose there is a small crack/leak. I am hoping that is just about it and i will get a aluminum radiator and put it in.
