You got your YZZF1 filter, and you got your 90915-10004 filter.

Theyre both totally different filters, the 10004 filter is better, and more expensive.

If you can, please explain the differences.

Basically, 90915-10004 (which is 90915-10004A on our system) is made in Japan and uses a cellulose "crystal matrix" filter element, whereas 90915-YZZF1 is made in Thailand and uses a cheaper pleated paper element, very similar to most other oil filters. The crystal matrix media is widely believed to offer better filtration than the pleated paper element. We haven't run an oil analysis on either, but the theory is that Toyota wouldn't specify the more expensive and unconventional construction unless they felt there was a real benefit to doing it that way. In the US, a really great filter isn't as important to the average car's lifespan because we preach frequent oil changes. In a market like Japan where cars aren't often kept as long, oil changes are (we hear) not done as frequently as we'd do them, so a better filter may be more critical to engine life.

Years ago, we had a really nice Toyota display comparing the crystal matric filter that they used to sell to US dealers to a Fram filter. I haven't seen that for a long time, though. We haven't cut either filter apart here, but there are a lot of pics on an old (archived) Earthlink site:

(click the "Impatient?" link if it doesn't load)

I've thought of slicing one of each open for comparison, but never find the time to do it. Seems like there are always bigger fish to fry!
