View Full Version : Any interest in a group buy for an aluninum radiator?

4thgenceli

I've been in discussion with Autopwr/ASI regarding their dual core aluminum radiators. I know there's a handful of members here that are using them with no complaints about quality or performance. They're selling for just shy of $200 right now on ebay by various vendors. I can get that price lower but need at least 10 units. These are for the st165 (which also works in the st162) and they have one available for the st185 for the same price (presuming it will also work in the st182 chassis).

Interested?

In 3-4 weeks I would be.

4thgenceli

That's about the timeframe I'm looking as well to purchase mine. Weather it be full price or discounted (I'd love the discount) I'll be buying it.

It would be a great upgrade to any vehicle, ditching the plastic end tanks :)

Well I am still working with Luni to get permission to run the group buy first, then I'll take names/addresses/etc.

They would like the $$$ as one lump payment and then each person's shipping address (and I'd presume they will provide a tracking # for each unit).

Rick89GTS

^Shouldn't be more than $10 higher to Canada, if even that.
That's how much extra shipping we paid on the original group buy a few years ago.
$155 is an excellent deal. We paid $275 shipped on the first run of these radiators.
With quantity, the price keeps going down. Awesome.

If you're using an ST185 radiator in an ST184 you'll need to get radiator stays for the 185. I can't remember how much it is but last I checked they're still available from Toyota.

You could go off the temperature gauge (unscientific) or use a temp gun (scientific) and find out what your current radiator temperature is at idling and warmed up. My gauge used to be a little more then half-way. Like a needle width passed half-way. Now with the larger, aluminum radiator, it never gets passed more then 3/5ths. I don't know what that temperature range actually comes out to, but I do know my engine runs significantly cooler.

I can tell you, in the summer time, when I was driving through the Mojave, I noticed a MASSIVE difference.

I confidently accelerated to 75+ mph in 4th gear, up a mountain, in 100F heat with the AC on and the car loaded with luggage. My needle peaked a little past halfway until I hit the summit and very quickly dropped off. Impressive, because my OEM radiator, easily boiled on I-5 pass in 90F heat, accelerating down to 55 mph, no AC and no luggage. I had to run the heater and take a break at the summit to make sure things cooled down.

Obviously you don't have these temperatures or lack of humidity, but I know the radiator does a great job in the DD letting your engine run cooler.

Actually I do have those temps, albeit for a shorter period of time.

Although it's already decided, my current rad has plastic end tanks which are now deciding to fall apart on me. So count me in 100% on this group buy.

FYI if any other 3S-FE owners got one, the fan holes line up a little differently with the GT fan. The bottom and top right line up, but the top left does not. Should be plenty to keep it in place though. It also looks like a small spacer/a few washers should be used on the lower hole, but that could just be that my shroud is bent.

Pics of mine(haven't actually connected the fan yet): http://www.celicatech.com/forums/showthread.php?53107-The-Hatchback-1988-GT&p=30167057#post30167057

Is it recommended to use the cap that came with it or does it matter?

CriScO
05-27-2011, 05:46 AM
That cap is at the stock pressure, it shouldn't matter.

underscore
05-27-2011, 05:58 AM
Mine showed up today, it looks quite solid with the only "blemishes" being a couple bent fins and the top of the cap is fairly scratched up. The drain plug system seems kinda odd, having to keep it all the way out to have it closed seems a bit backwards to me and there's nowhere to attach a hose so it will just be dumping everywhere when it comes time to drain it. The top rad support "lumps" are slightly offset to the left but that's no biggie and the neither of the left side fan bolt holes line up but that's also fine because my stock fan is too thick to fit.

My only real concern is that my stock rad has these two lines coming off of the bottom with little caps on the end that seem to have only stayed on by the grace of god because they're barely on there. These lines don't exist on the new rad and there are no holes for them. I can see where I think the lines that are supposed to connect are instead hooked to something else in my car, but I'm not sure.

Pics of everything will be coming tomorrow.

jaydog82
05-27-2011, 06:06 AM
those lines are for an automatic trans cooler that is built in to some stock radiators. dont worry about it.

Car_Barn_Bandit
05-27-2011, 06:24 AM
I use a funnel to drain mine. Drain's faster then the little hose.

My only complaint is the temp sensor gasket. You need to find a better o-ring to fit around the sensor and seal it off between the brass nut and the aluminum surface. The stock rad has an internal o-ring that seals inside. That was my only gripe with the radiator.

CriScO

^ This. If you're manual, they're not supposed to be connected. The caps do nothing.

05-27-2011, 08:33 AM
Ah gotcha, so whatever coolant would have been circulating in there would have been separate from the regular coolant anyways? That explains why the caps managed to stay on. I also ended up snapping off my overflow nipple that goes on the rad as it had been glued on by some plastic epoxy looking stuff.

I was wondering about that, the bolt that they have to block the hole has a small o-ring around it but I couldn't get it off to add it to the temp sensor. Will I need a different one to be sure it won't leak? I'm already sketched out enough about that drainage bolt thing leaking. How do you drain it with a funnel? My current plan is to bend the wings on it so that it can't be opened and then just take off the lower rad hose or remove the temp sensor when I want to drain it.

CriScO
05-27-2011, 08:56 AM
Actually there's no coolant there, it's for transmission fluid.

And it can be messy, but you can always just drain by removing the lower hose. An open drain pan works great for that. Personally, since I have no sensors in the radiator, I just put teflon tape on the threads of both plugs and tightened them down.

CriScO
05-27-2011, 08:57 AM

I had a little box of assorted o-rings. good to have around. Found a decent flat one that did the trick.

How do you drain it with a funnel?

I remove a few bolts holding the engine cover on and use a long funnel into a catch pan.

Any chance they will extend the group buy price to further orders? I didn't see this untill just now and I am in the market for an ST185 al radiator.

Thanks.

I do not know if they will honor the price in this thread or not.

You may be able to email them directly and purchase it for less than what it sells for on ebay. Their website is autopwr.com.

OK, so who was the vendor who finally arranged the sale of this, or was it autopwr directly?

The radiators were purchased directly from Autopwr. It was a combined effort between Red Rocket Performance and myself to hammer out the details with Autopwr.

Gents, unless there are 10 people willing to join forces with you I'm afraid this can't move forward. Feel free to drum up support and get people to join. You guys can talk about it here, but be warned that it took us a while to get the first going so it will likely take you even longer.

Cheers,
RRPD

Just a heads up, the rad I got off eBay showed up just the same as the one from the group buy, however the fins weren't as nice looking (they don't go all the way to the top and bottom, and the gaps aren't even. Not a huge deal, as the car still stays super cool, but it is something worth noting.
