As some of you guys may have read in my original thread, I was in a minor accident about a month ago and some of my exhaust was damaged. (I was forced over a median, thankfully no body damage to car.)

I had a cracked muffler, a few holes in my resonator, a hole in the front of the exhaust (also dented) and a dented oil pan. A friend of mine welded my muffler for me and welded the hole in the front exhaust pipe but my resonator is too rusted/thin to weld effectively. I've decided to just try my hand at making/buying another exhaust system. CA laws about this confuse me. I'm working with a budget of about $500 and would like to if possible upgrade my exhaust to 2.25-2.5" any suggestions?

Also, can I buy a universal catalytic converter on eBay? Mine need to be replaced anyway. Is this ok in CA?

As long as the catalytic converter states CARB Legal and CA legal then you should be fine.

Funny you mention that, I just did some reading on CARB laws regarding catalytic converters. Turns out, even if I have a 2.5" exhaust system I cannot by law have anything other than a 2" catalytic converter because you can only have the same size cat as your car shipped with.

Would I see any performance increase if I upgraded to 2.25" or 2.5" pipes but kept the 2" catalytic converter?

EDIT: Weird, the front cat on a 91' 5SFE is 2" while the rear cat is 2.25." Anyone know why?

Not dramatically.. although from what I know is that if you intend to keep it as a DD than you might in the long run notice some decrease as you adding more air flow through. But wouldn't be a bad idea to go 2.5 if you gonna be adding headers n other engines mods later than you will see some HP gains.

I'm planning a 3S-GTE swap. I would love to go 2.5" but like I said, it's apparently illegal to mod the cat beyond 2" in the front and 2.25" in the back so any gain I would get from 2.5" pipes would be negated.

So here's what I'm looking to get:

http://www.magnaflow.com/02catalytic_converters/02product/displayuniversal01.asp?catalogid=54681&universal=38104
http://www.magnaflow.com/02catalytic_converters/02product/displayuniversal01.asp?catalogid=54675&universal=37975
http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/displayapplications.asp?partnumber=11215

+ a 97' Camry header.

Going to use 2.25" pipes. Should I include a resonator or just skip one and use pipes throughout?

Include the resonator. It will sound raspy and hondaish without it.

That's what I figured. Just a standard bottle style resonator should work fine right? Any recommendations?

If you can fit it, i would try to use a 2ft resonator.

Well, I've seen this listed as a resonator on several forums but they call it a muffler here: http://www.exhaust4less.com/02product/displayapplications.asp?partnumber=10425

It appears to be a resonator? Not sure.

Mufflers and resonators are similar in shape, but not design.

The resonator is a hollow echo chamber for waves to cancel each other out.

a muffler has a media to muffle the sound waves.

Can you possibly point me to a site that sells resonators? I can't find any from a reputable brand.

EDIT: And I know the difference, the reason I was asking about that particular part # is because on some sites it is listed as a resonator and on others as a muffler.
