View Full Version : Turbo lovers what’s your favourite sounding Blow off valve

Do you prefer loud, obnoxious, whiny, or soft, gentle, whisper?
Would you rather have something in the middle or maybe a bypass valve?

I'm buying a new one now and I'm leaning towards Blitz, but I love HKS.
Something about that annoying pshhhh that can be heard from blocks away does it for me.

HKS SSQV FTW!

Depends on the engine. The SSQV sounds great on a straight 6 and like hilarious finger-pointing crap on a 4banger, but I've put them on anyway. :hehe: Blitz is decent without being tooo loud generally

Fensport dump valve. Just a straight air dump, like on truck air brakes.
Loud as hell.

I think y'all should upload a vid of your car with the blow off engaged to really help secure your BOV as the bestest sounding.

I prefer the sounds of a straight air dump. No whistle, horn, or anything else. One of the reasons I just picked up a Tial Q. Also it is the highest flowing BOV on the market, uses a v-band flange, and is a work of freakin art.

I do love the sound of the SSQV. The RFL is just loud, and I'm not used to it.

I like the forge bov on my car not high pitch or anything but i might switch it up this summer for a different sound.

I <3 my stock BPV. It sounds like my car sneezes when it dumps the air. I named my car Julius Sneezer cause of it :P

I think if Im going for the loud BOV noise I like the Greddy Type-S valve. I like it better than the HKS one for sure. I do like the sound of the Tial though. They are super nice valves. The MK2 stock valve recirculated is great too, it makes some noise but not alot.

I think Im gonna try running a Type-S with a dump tube attached to it so it isnt as loud.

And I think Im also going to install an electronic vacuum blocking mechanism so that I can disable and enable the BOV if i want to for that sleeper effect and for a slight burst in speed (if you dont blow off between shifts, your turbo stays spooled better so you have better instant response when you find the next gear).

for loud air dump no whistle, Blitz Super Sound, but I like a little squeek in my blow off so the SSQV does it for me as long as we are talking over 10 lbs boost, otherwise its too quiet.

After years of the SSQV it just got annoying to the point where i cut out the fins and its barely audible now. I might try the purple circular insert at some point.

hmm yes, maybe i want to put the purple insert also...would be nice for a change

but what sound is this when he shifts ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCyGY_4Vhos , that sound is killer man..

I think the sound is caused by no blow of valve, a friend of mine have a turbo car when he removed his BOV he got that sound.
Think it's called turbo flutter or compressor surge. try search for it on youtube an you wil fin a lot of vids, like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF0JO9TfSjw

The video says it's a stock mr2 BPV...

bloodMoney
03-25-2011, 01:05 PM
Its probably surging because the MR2 BPV can't flow enough.

If you listen to that last vid, even with the BOV properly dumping, there is some surge.

Speedricer's car is the same way. He's got a ST215 swapped 185 with a front mount and an SSQV and it still flutters off throttle.

03-25-2011, 01:45 PM
I dont care if flutter is harmfull to the turbo it is just so awesome, think I'm going to remove my BOV.

T-spoon
03-25-2011, 02:48 PM
My buddies 93 supra fluttered a bit. It was running a single with an HKS SSQV at 12-14psi. It actually sounded kind of cool mixed with the sound of the BOV. My 7m with a similar turbo didn't flutter at all (different BOV though)

No guarantee you'll get that sound from it. Most Alltrac/GT4s (obviouly pre-94) don't have a BOV stock and most of them make no sound. Keep your BOV, IMO.

4thgenceli
03-25-2011, 03:08 PM
So if that's the case with the 215 swap is still fluttering with the ssqv, the stock st215 bpv should not flutter then? Or is he just running ungodly boost?

it's because his BPV is messed up or the VTV is hooked up backwards. the BPV properly hooked up will NEVER do this.

Maruki-kun
03-25-2011, 08:14 PM
reason why I know it doesn't do that is because I'm running a brand new one with a brand new VTV on 18PSI on a CT20B.

Our AFM's stop most of the fluttering. For the brief time I had my AFM off running the MAPECU the bov fluttered. It sounded badass but the car wasn't running right so the afm went back in.

Am I the only one who thinks the HKS SSQV sounds ricer as all hell? All I want to hear is a nice air dump...Shhhhuuuu

I like the straight dump on an Allison V-1710. Of course it's hard to hear with all the prop noise, but it puts the rest to shame.

I agree the dump valve shouldn't be equiped with whistles, if you are fitting a Bov fit one that makes an honest sound, not a super ricer device that makes silly sounds.
It just sounds stupid and reinforces the ricer reputation associated with jdm cars. SSQV or dump valve wquiped with a whistle are intended for teenagers in their civic's.

on my MKII MR2 i just used the stock BPV vented to air and it had an awesome sound of air release. in the blue car i actually made my own BOV and it has a similar rush of air sound. i dont really care for the chirp the SSQ makes or the greddy type RS

Mine. And if not this...i'd be running a Tial (older bv50 version, not really digging the newer Q's)

Still need to take a grinder and shape it to the greddy flange to make it more aesthetically appealing. Knowing me...I'll probably leave it...gotta make new IC pipes soon anyways.

I'm using a MR2 bpv at 17 psi with my ct20b and love it! I don't notice any Surge when it vents at my max psi either. Definately worth the $45 I spent on it :)

I have the SSQV. I got the older adjustable one. It's probably going up for sale because the chirp is a little much.
I also have some surge at lower boost levels and run a FMIC with a ct20b.

I noticed the surge only came after I went to a front mount but I doubt it's doing any type of damage.

Chris...I can't tell, but is that an toyota BPV flanged adapter? If so, where'd ya get it made? I've been mulling over ideas on how to make one and the best I can come up with short of a one-off CNC is to cut the flange off a broken BPV and weld the tial vband ferrule onto it, but it'll look a bit bulky. I like the low profile-ness of that one you pictured.
