Ok I know everyone likes the 3s swap but in my area 3s's are rather hard to come by and to ship a jdm clip or motor is not cost effective for me. The local u pull it has rev.2 like crazy. I'm curious how much work it would take to swap it in to my 90 gt coupe. They sell the motors for 165 USD or so. I've read that they make more torque at the same HP levels as a stock 3s while N/A if done right. Also has anyone even done it or just skipped it altogether for some reason.

Are you trying to compare the 5sfe to the 3sgte, 3sge, or 3sfe?


The 5sfe is comparable to the power of the 3sfe and some 3sge's. You can squeeze a little more power out of the 5sfe by adding cams, intake, header and exhaust. I did that very build on my old 5sfe and it made a noticeable difference.

If you can find a 3sge in the junkyard then that would be a good n/a swap. My buddy found a 1st Gen 3sge from an 89 Celica at the pull-a-part in Jackson, MS a couple of weeks ago. We are going to swap that into his Celica.;

If you want to get the most benefit, you swap the ECU and wire harness so you get the Knock Sensor on the backside of the block. I actually have a Rev. 2 in my 91' GTS. It just drops in like Rev. 1 without ANY issues. You can use the original harness and everything. You just have a knock sensor on the backside that won't have anything to attach to. My knock sensor is unattached and just looks lonely, thats all.

Well I'm wanting to turbo so I would guess the 3sge first so I can do cams exhaust intake basic upgrades then the gte when I turbo

Like I said the availability of them isn't cost effective and I wanna do something a little different

A 5SFTE build is viable -- had a member here who'd work one up to about 225 HP/240ft-lbs if I remember the dyno correctly.

thats why said 3SGE then turbo and build

and yeah a 5sfte is a good option and so is using that 3sge head on the 5s block to make it a 5sge or boosted 5sgte

there are aftermarket companies that can get u any of the upgrade parts u need or want

Call me crazy, but I say use a 5SFE, get used to it, become familiar with it.

Save some money and get a 3SGTE or a 3SGE and rebuild it so you can have a DD. Then swap. Won't have to deal with down time on your ride, reliability issues or the unknown.

He is saying to use the 5sfe N/A for now because they are cheap. Then save up for the 3sgte or 5sfte.
