So im looking for a beater so i dont have to DD my truck.

I found a 94 GT the will turn over, but wont start; about 1.5 hours away. Dude wants $600 for it. Its a 5 speed and ugly as sin. (3-4 colors, may get a chaos-esque rattlecan job.)

Now i think i could get the car for 3 or 4 hundred. it will probably cost another 50-100 for me to drive out there, lunch, and back.

Worth it? If i cant get it running do you think i could recoup my investment through parting out and scraping?

What are possible causes for it to crank but not start?

Off the top of my head im thinking:

Broken timing belt
Dizzy problems
Ignightor
broken wiring

Any other ideas?

EDIT: Murgy, doing anything sunday? If i can get approval from the wife want to ride to johnson city? (assuming he takes my offer)

Could be lots of stuff man. Really have to look at it to know. Sounds like a money pit TBH. Youll spend $10 here and $50 there and never get it going properly

Also, he said it ran fine one day, then just wouldnt start the next day.

But id take that with a grain of salt.

Worth it for less than $400. No more.

With the belt broken, you cant even turn it over to see if its frozen. I wouldnt trust it.

Yes you can. The A and S series are both non-interference.

5SFEs like to chuck timing belts like that. Id say its worth it. Hell, even if the engine is toast, 5Ss can be a dime a dozen. Id at least go look at it. Take a can of starting fluid with you. If it wont start with fluid, chances are its your timing belt. If you got one, take a compression gauge with you. If it has none, or is super low, its the belt.

Yeah, it's not like you can't find parts for these cars, I say go for it, won't be hard to get most of your $$$ back if turns out to be a real basket case.

maybe it's out of gas, go look, the drive alone and a lunch away from home would the 50 - 100

Haha, If it was out of gas, it wouldn't even crank, or would eventually stop. If it's not the belt, I guessing it's the ignition. Can't hurt to look at it if you want a DD Grot.

Umm, yeah it would crank, until the battery ran out of juice. Fuel is not required to crank the engine. You sir deserve a /facepalm.

Honestly, to echo a few others it sounds like the Tbelt. I had the tensioner on my 90 GT try to come through the cover. It ran fine then I shut it off and couldn't get it to start again; replaced the belt/tensioner bam, back to new.
