Anyone have or know of a hood strut setup for the 5th gens? I'd really like to throw the prop rod away, but so far I have not had any luck with hood struts for the 5th gens. Something similar to the pic below.

I'm sure you can fabricate something to work.

Personally, I'd look into using a Ford Taurus hood struts. They're some of the stronger ones I have seen. Either those or some off a caddy.

Anyone near Dexter Michigan? I've been talking to Redline tuning (http://www.redlinetuning.com) who make some great reliable hood struts for many vehicles including Tacomas which I've personally seen installed on and they are also a very decent price at around 70.00. They said if a fifth gen owner could stop by for a couple hours they could probably come up with an application for our cars. Anyone willing to volunteer?

sounds like a nifty addition could easily find some cylinders in any local salvage yard. I'm thinking you'd have to pay attention to the strength of the cylinders vs the effort it would take to lower the hood vs the upper attach point. might require a little reinforcement, wouldn't want to fold your hood in half pushing against a too strong cylinder. (ie we've all seen the trunk deck on coupes that the spring hasn't rotated on..... have fun!

But you also used a CS hood, that may change things.

Just go get some trunk struts from the auto parts and make them fit. Whats the problem here?

Fitment with engine / fender clearance.

PSHT. Youll be fine. Theres plenty of room to mount them on the side along the fender, people be overthinkin this.

You guys should check out this thread: http://mr2oc.com/showthread.php?t=368467

Or just get this: http://www.ixizconcept.com/ixizhood/ixizhood_pd.htm

All parts from mcmaster, $30 for one prop. Maybe our hood would need one on both sides.

The 6gc hood struts wont work unless U can figure out some clearance issues. I might tackle this again to see if I can find a solution, but its mostly the issue with clearance against the fender/strut area and the hood not being shallow enough so when it is closed, the hood is raised a little.

The Camry ones might work, but would require modification I think and I don't have any to test it with.

I recommend someone goto Redline or a similar company and see if they can size us up.

Okay. well that does look doable, but sadly not with the stock strut bar since it only covers 2 holes and not all 3 so there isn't anything to drill like yours is and I don't want to drill into the body.
