View Full Version : What the hell is going on with headunits these days?

It seems like technology gets better and better, computers get better and better, headunits for cars are getting cheaper and cheaper.

I was just looking at whats out there for the sake of checking out newer updated shit, and I cant see a single HU Id want to buy right now.

What are you guys all running?

Im stuck in the dark ages I think. Rollin an Eclipse CD5000 in my Celica.

I have a Pioneer DEHP6900IB sitting in a box that came out of my RSX. Chris has an old school Kenwood model in the 6g. The st185 has a cheapo Alpine CDA9854 in it. I haven't seen much that I like lately either. I'd stick with the Eclipse for now if I was you Rob.

Sony CDX-GT640UI

The current version allows you to match your car's interior lighting. I rock mine in green.

Grayscale bought my old headunit from me. A DDIN Kenwood something, I really liked it.
Lately, I just install whatever I can get my hands on. The Honda has a Pioneer, and the miata had a cheap head unit... like JVC cheap. Then again, I'd rather not have a nice ass system so I lose my stereo AND my convertible top in one go.

In my 7th gen, I got the Alpine Marine CDA-9886M as pictured here: http://www.midwestaudiovisions.com/images/alpine_marine_cda_9886m.jpg.

I got it for two reasons. 1) the silver color matched up with the color of the dash and it also has a white band around the faceplate that matches the white on my car. 2) the box said "Alpine Marine", and I just couldn't pass up such a pun of being a Marine stationed in a mountainous state...

Nowadays I rock whatever I can scrounge from junkyards for $40. Back when I was building systems I used Premier as they were very well featured.

Everyone is going to have a different opinion on this kind of thing, and reading online reviews only goes so far. You gotta find a good car stereo store and go in and try a few units out, pick a couple favorites and then go home and order them online.

I have a JVC. I recently acquired another stock head unit because I'd like to have a clean, original interior. Plus my JVC doesn't support the system 10. Not all speakers are working like they did with my stock radio. I'm hoping that there is a way to hook my IPod up to the stock HU.

See Im a head unit snob. I know all about what I like. I am very objective about it, and while Eclipses were on the market, in my eyes they pretty much dominated. Their sound quality is significantly higher to me than anyone else. Eclipse doesnt do headunits anymore, and Ive just been looking for what I want to put in my MR2. It has a Sony something but whats sad is it is nicer than pretty much anything Ive seen currently as well. And I dont like the way it sounds compared to my Eclipses, and I dont like Alpines, Clarions, Pioneers, Premiers, as much as I like my Eclipses.

And nobody seems to make a snobby headunit for those of us who will actually spend money on one. Id have no problem paying 300-500 dollars for a nice headunit. It just seems hard to find one in that price/performance bracket. Everythings been cheaped down and scaled back. More stuff crammed into the same garbage.

Im pretty disappointed. It really appears the consumers are total cheapasses and feature rich good sounding "premium" headunits just arent popular anymore. That makes me sad.

Anyone see an Eclipse CD7200MKii out there for sale let me know. Thats what I REALLY want.

I want control over my amplifiers. I want a variety of media inputs (Sony Bus system). I also want a knob to control things. I got a high end Sony Head Unit to do this. Pioneer would be a second choice, but I like my separate HD Radio box because I don't trust cramming everything into 1 DIN unit and giving me quality.

I dunno. One thing I'll ding the head unit I have, is the lack of adjustability. It doesn't have a user set EQ, which I do miss. But I've managed to wiggle the general settings and my amps around to where it gets awesome clarity all through all of the ranges at once, and when I crank it up it'll punch you in the face like Mike Tyson.

Luni

My Celica has an awesome system in it. Its simple. It contains high quality stuff (Eclipse head unit, JL audio amps, Alpine Type-R sub). My old MR2 used to have a really good system in it (Eclipse head unit, MB Quart components, Fosgate subwoofers, JL Audio amplifier)

The new MR2 has an OK head unit in it, but I dont like the way it sounds all that much. Having the best gear makes me kind of a snob, so its one of those things if you had one, youd miss it, if youve never had one, you wouldnt know what youre missing. I sold my Eclipse from the MR2 to Baby Bear (I regret doing so) and now its not replaceable.

Ask Stacy or Mario though, you can HEAR a difference between anything else out there and an Eclipse. Im mostly just sad that theyre gone and all you can get is DVD nav systems, cause those dont focus on sound quality. And nobody else makes anything that can step up to fill the void left by Eclipse.

Im looking for older eclipses to put in there. Im onto one, I might get it, Ill post up what I get for the MR2 when/if I do.

Im pretty stoked actually.

Won this for 190 bucks. Any old school audiophiles know whats up with this unit and how nice it is. Its worth every penny.

I also won a 3434 for 20 bucks shipped. Thats a fucking score and a half actually.

http://www.zwuk.ru/pix/237.jpg

And I won an badass old school Eclipse 3242 4 channel amp for 75. This thing specs out about as nice as my JLs, and I LOVE my JLs. Again audiophiles will understand.

This thing has some pretty sturdy looking circuitry.

http://ampguts.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=2451

Check out the fuses on this thing. 4 20 amp fuses. That means this thing is rated to handle enough juice to produce ~780 watts RMS (14 volts at 80 amps equals 1120 watts peak. Following the .707 w/rms rule)

http://ampguts.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=2462

This shit is gonna RAWK in the MR2.

I need a new head unit for the Celica also. I was gonna throw in the old Pioneer unit I have in the accent, but I think she deserves something totally new.

Anyway, I was shopping around checking out the displays..... and WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE CD PLAYERS IN THE HEAD UNITS?!?!!?!?!?

Every one I liked had NO cd player. It had at least 2 USB 2.0 ports, some sort of card reader (sd/etc). There was one that folded down and a tray ejected where you can throw some sort of drive/mp3 player and connect it and it hides inside the head unit. ;WTF:

Fucking geriatric society. Crossovers, gain knobs, etc. Total functionality.

Just because you have a nice stereo system doesnt mean you have to listen to it loud. Just cause in 30 doesnt mean I have to listen to lo fi crap. I plan on keeping my hearing for another few years and while I still have it, Id like to enjoy it. Music is a passion of mine.

I daily drove my MR2 for close to 10 years on and off. After the first year or so, I got bored of just listening to my engine. I spend easily 2 hours or more in my car every day. I drive a lot. I like to listen to music while driving and I like it to sound good.

Just got off of work. One of the guys was talking about this:

Nakamichi (http://www.amazon.com/Nakamichi-MB-X-player-changer-dash/dp/B001LQWHSA).

I have never seen, nor head anything about this brand. Seems like you may be able to trick input from a CD changer for AUX hook-ups.

I think the problem with hi-fi aftermarket head units, is the crowd who makes such purchases, buys the car with the McIntosh, Harmon/Kardon, Bose, Cambridge factory stereo already. Unless you have well encoded CDs to use with a Nakamichi, these expensive systems become limiting.

I am sure, if I go talk to the guys I buy my random audio parts from, I will find something we haven't seen, with full quartz tuning, etc.

EDIT: They now have an MP3 version, that looks like something I may actually be interested in.

Nakamichi MP3 HU (http://www.Nakamichi.com/pdf/CD300_Brochure.pdf)

EDIT2: They do DAC!

Youve never heard of Nak?

They made/make some of the best shit out there.

As for the "factory" good stuff? It doesnt exist. Ive been in BMWs with the harmon kardon stuff. Garbage. Ive been in several cars with the bose stuff. Garbage.

Nothing that comes out of a factory will usually touch something you can do aftermarket for cheaper than dealer invoice.

Anyway. I should be happy with what I bought.

Youve never heard of Nak?

Negatory.

The companies I have heard of and know come from my uncle who was obssessed with audio when I was a kid. He used to build tube amplifiers from scratch. There is an awesome electrical store in Dayton that has a huge room full of rare parts to make your own hi-fidelity equipment. I know more about companies like McIntosh and Celestra where watching the glow of a tube is like sex when listening to the hi-fi recordings of Eric Clapton on reel-to-reel.

Luni
01-31-2011, 05:03 PM
Roger. Most of that stuff is more commonly associated to home audio anyway.

But yeah, Nakamichi has always made really good stuff. To me, Nak was like the Harmon Kardon of the car audio. Back in the 90s/early 2000s HK made some of the best home audio recievers in their price range. They were total utilitiarian, bass, treble, balance knobs, rock SOLID contruction, super warm sound, etc. Naks are like that. No frills, just work, fantastic circuitry. Simple.

With head units specifically, I am wondering how much longer the industry has to live. There are a very very few cars that have a standard DIN mount head unit. Everything these days is integrated into the dash panel in such a way that there is no way to nicely replace it with an aftermarket piece. It's all integrated.

So is the aftermarket head unit industry lying on its death bed? It is so sad too, because aftermarket companies can make products that destroy factory units in every single aspect, and really lead the pack on what eventually makes it into OEM vehicles.

Just a question...

Components like speakers, amps, etc. are different of course, since you can easily change those out.

Luni

Nakamichi made the "premium audio" system for lexus for a while. I used to have HK home equipment, but never thought much of their mobile audio (although I never actually heard it)

Im just fuckin with ya Luni, I like functionality as well. (same reason I like a car with all the bells and whistles). I want to be able to tune crossover points and gain, have a separate SW section IN the headunit, and I like USB input. Beyond that Im not too picky. I like a decent powerful system with reasonable sound. Mid range frequencies are the worst part of my hearing loss. Ive kind of given up on good audio for other reasons as well. I never keep a car long enough to build a proper system anymore, lol.

I know you are dude. Thats why I threw in the obligatory "fucking geriatric society" comment :p

Theres an Eclipse 5444 up now as well. I really want that unit, the 8443 I bought is nicer overall, but the 5444 plays MP3 cds and has an aux in. None of the old school stuff has USB input, and I guess to be honest, that suits me just fine too as long as the aux in sounds ok.

I think you may be onto something there Chris. I didn think about that, but youre right. Now days its much harder to swap out OEM head units. Stupid OEMs.

Yeah. I think there will still be the niche suppliers, but before having the big names also pushing the technology it kept prices really low and new features were getting really cool. I personally love the ipod control that they have developed, which is 100000x more useful than the OEM "ipod compatible" head units I've used. Probably because OEM has to cater to every mp3 device, aftermarket can target whatever they like.

For example I have this on my 205:

http://www.alpine-usa.com/data/product_images/435_1lg.jpg

Control is so easy, just like an ipod really.

Or, I got my brother this for his 162. Great control and also plays video.

http://www.bestbuy.ca/multimedia/Products/500x500/101/10144/10144732.jpg

Maybe not the best in terms of audio quality, however I'd say they are certainly capable units and have really good functional interfaces for the iPod. Something you very rarely get on new cars. Maybe, maybe in Ford with the Microsoft Sync - but I haven't really looked at that and I also really dislike Ford.

CollapsedNut
01-31-2011, 06:14 PM
The mobile electronics field will never loose HU's. Even as cars get more complex dash's, companies will still make kits or specific units for it. Look at how steering wheel controls have been integrated into aftermarket units to keep factory functionality. I think the reason we have so many cheapo units now is because of manufactures using a standard din or double din housing. It made it very easy to make a unit to fit in there. If we get away from that, these companies with no R&D department will not be able to make units to fit anymore, then we will get good companies making great products again.

Chris, how do you like that Alpine? I was looking at getting one for myy next one.

Car_Barn_Bandit
01-31-2011, 08:03 PM
Ford has been unhappy with MS Sync, there are several companies working on courting them to shift.

My problems with Hi-Fi in a car are:

Proper sound space like sound insulation, road noise, engine noise, rattling and feedback / interferance.

Hi-Fi digital media. An iPod or CD is not going to have the encoding needed. You would need a MiniDisc with a DAC head unit, or a Super Audio CD player. That is why I settled for control, because if I wanted to get into it, I'd spend 10x more money than what my car was worth.

I do like the upgraded Alpine interfaces. If Eclipse handled HD-Radio and iPod, I'd use one.

Has anyone gone the double DIN route?

Luni
01-31-2011, 08:36 PM
Eclipses DO handle HD radio and IPOD. They just require modules to do it.

And again, you GET what you pay for. You really do. Even apples vs apples. 2 Celicas, same speakers, etc, one has an Eclipse unit, one has el cheapo 119 dollar kenwood, sony, etc. Even if that el cheapo unit has ipod integration, hd radio, etc. It still wont sound as good as the Eclipse.

Im only using Eclipse as an example, same goes for any higher end unit.

The whole "cant get hifi out of a CD or an MP3" is rubbish.

Take 2 units that play the exact same format or whatever, and compare them side by side. One of them will do ONE thing with it, and the other will do something different with it. Likewise take 2 cars, one has a high quality CD player, using internal amp to "ok" speakers, one using a standard CD player, external amp with good speakers, which one do you think is going to sound better? Cars are a harsh environment for sound. The way I tune my radio, Im driving it while Im doing it. As such, Im tuning around road noise, etc. As a result, there isnt a whole lot of audible sound difference between a HQ mp3 (192vbr minimum), and a CD track. Even if you COULD get a SACD in a car (I know SOME manufacturers support them), Unless you had super high end gear (good speakers, amplification, sound processing, noise deading like you were talking about), you wouldnt hear the difference anyway.

The encoding isnt the end all/be all for how it sounds. Ill bet a 128k mp3 in my Celica will sound better than a cd quality recording of the same song in 90 percent of the rest of the people on heres stereos.

Just saying, theres more to sound quality than format. I can encode anything to a "lossless" format on my Iphone or IPOD. Or I can just run a standard CD. Just cause you can too doesnt mean yours is gonna sound as good as mine. Not saying "mine" is better than "yours" im just saying figuratively, 2 different units, with different features and processing. Apples and oranges.

I guess on the same token, my Sony requires proper wiring and amplifiers to sound decent. I just like my damn knob that flips through my iPod like the wheel. Does the Eclipse require playlists? Is it searchable?

My CD5000 in my Celica actually has a fantastic ipod interface, and you scroll through with a wheel. I hit my button to enter ipod search. Attached to it is a 600w MTX mono amp and an old school 12" paper cone Pioneer woofer. Sounds good enough to me.
Somewhere I have a nice Pioneer Premiere head unit, cant remember the model number off hand. Newer unit, drop face, MP3 deck, iPod hookup .... think i paid around $300.00 for it when I bought it a few years back. Looks a lot like a DEH-P5900 series.

Good luck finding one.

Notes on the IPOD interface. A few "buts" I guess.

1) it wont work on the newest version ipod touch (it will browse and read the ipod, but it wont charge it)
2) its a bit hit and miss on my iphone, it always has been. Something with the eclipses code/interface (and like on the recent ipod touch, it wont charge the phone - this is Iphone 3G and up)

I never had any issues with my nano, or my old video 60 gig ipod I had when I got it.

Its 2005 technology. Its missing USB. It DOES have sirius capability, ipod interface capability (Requires IPC-106 controller), and HD radio capability (Requires HD radio unit as well). It does do more than most of the things on the market now though. It does have a parametric EQ. I believe its a 7 band. It does have crossovers, time delay, it has SRS WOW effect (which I just turn off), you can make the buttons green, blue, red, orange, or combinations therein. It has the ESN stuff (which by now wont be active anyway) which allows you to code the head unit to a 4 digit code OR a CD (if removed from the car, will only work if the correct CD is entered again). So thats kinda cool. It does NOT have detachable face. Eclipse prides themselves on the ESN, so no detachable face on that one. My CD7000 has detachable face (sold it to Baby Bear unfortunately tho). My GFs CD5100 has detachable face. So I believe all the NEWER ones do. Just not the 5000 for some reason. Another odd thing on the 5000 is it SAYS its got 8v preamps but it dont. Its a typo. However, one thing GOOD about it, is unlike MOST headunit manufacturers who CLAIM their stuff does 4, 5, 8, volts, whatever, but when you turn it all the way up it clips down to less than a volt, Eclipse WILL give you your rated volts all the way up to max volume. This results in a much cleaner signal at high volumes and increased "overhead"

You cant find one anywhere on ebay right now. You cant find one from a vendor. There IS one on a forum I found that has car stereo/amps/speakers claffifieds.

CD7000 is also one to look for. Its even NICER than a 5000, its not as pretty IMO, but it does a lot more. It has a better EQ, better crossovers, better sound shaping modes, its NUTS all the shit you can do with the thing. Ask Baby Bear, or Mario, they both have one. And Baby Bear went from a high end Sony to the CD7000 and it BLOWS the sony out of the water.

In between, they made other stuff too. Like, a CD5100 is a good unit, it DOES do USB and I think it has a better IPOD interface (I have one in my GFs truck, but Ive never hooked my ipod up to it), but it doesnt have NEAR the EQ/sound shaping settings the 5000 had. Now that could be a good or a bad thing, depending on how deep you like to go. It still sounds VERY nice. Its easy as hell to tune, since you can only change bass, mid, and treble and I think it too has crossovers.

The CD70000 pretty much does everything the 5000 does, but it has MORE crossover capabilities, it has a 3way mode (sends 3 way signals out the RCAs, fronts are highs, rears are mids, subs are lows), and the EQ is an 11 band in 3 different types (theres x bands for high, x bands for mid, and a low, and they all get their own screen). It has so much crap it does. Its nuts. In 3 way, professional mode it its insane. Youd have to read about em at this point to see what all the hub bub is about.

So youre looking for a CD5000, CD7000, CD5100, CD7100, CD7200, or the mecca, the CD7200MKii

Those are the ones that have integrated ipod control. Now, you can go older and have even BETTER SQ, at the expense of ipod integration. That Eclipse 5444 I was talking about is on ebay for like 170 or something buy it now. That is a fantastic head unit. It just wont interface an IPOD, but it DOES have an aux in, and will play MP3 CDs.

So, yeah, theres my "spiel" if you will on Eclipse stuff. Theres stuff to stay away from IMO, and stuff to snatch right the fuck up.

Oh yeah, def going to find the latest. They actually have updated firmware to make them compatible. I like bluetooth as well. It would be the CD7200 for the specs it lists. I like control over my system, and it offers the most precision.

Go for the 7200mkii if you can find one.

Good luck. And if you happen to come across someone/some place with some new in box ones, send me a PM. I really wanna get my hands on one too.

There are TONS of little electronic places around here that sell discontinued items. Sightwaves in Eagle Rock won't have it, but they will know someone who does. I am also pretty successful at pawn shops. There are a couple that actually specialize in car-audio and sell warranties as well. I will keep you posted.

Luni if you end up wanting to sell one of the HUs you bought i may be interested. I want to get a nicer one.

What do you want yours to do man? Cause both the ones I got, just play CDs and have radio. The nicer of the 2 has aux in and so much tuning potential you need a degree at a soundboard to make the most out of (I exagerate).

If you want IPOD control neither will do it.

If that 3434 I bought works dude, Ill send it to you for what I paid for it. I was hoping to turn it and make a profit off it, but at the same time, I cant do that shit to my friends. Pretty sure the 3434 will at least play MP3 cds, so you can still stuff quite a bit of music onto a CD.

So Ill test it when I get it, and if it reads CDs and turns on and works like it should, Ill send it to you for what I paid for it, plus shipping to you.

Theres the manual. it outlines the 3434. That headunit is from 2004. it DOES play Mp3s, but I dont know if this one even works right, cause it was so cheap, so ya never know.

Dude, I paid 20 something bucks for the thing.

Shipping to you would be 10-15. So youre looking at 35-40 bucks for a pretty good little cd unit that plays mp3 cds. If you cant swing that you got issues :)

I didnt look back to see what you paid.

I thought 115 was the cheapest one you got.

For that price i will def pick it up if it works.

It would be more expensive at a pawn shop

I had to edit my post because I missed an entire page and Luni already answered CBB on the Eclipse units. Bottom line, get one if you can.

I'm with CollapsedNut. I think the mobile HU industry will evolve, not die out. There will always be people who want to upgrade. What I'd like to see is a type of aftermarket system that will integrate into the factory face/integrated dashboard on newer cars but expand with all of the quality and options that the aftermarket HUs currently offer (Amplifier control, sound quality, iPod, USB, etc.). But not like the integrated iPod adapters or aux inputs for factory radios, because those intermittently don't work, and are not user friendly. The industry will move forward, but it will need to work with the auto manufacturers to be able to really change the current crap market of cheap single DIN radios that are feature-heavy and lacking in the SQ department.
