So, figured I would post my main project here just to show and get the inevidable advice :)

My main project is my 1980 Corolla hatchback. The first one I ever owned was suppose to be a temp car till I could find a car I wanted. I liked the body but that was about it. Ended up loving the car. A year later had to get rid of it and decided I would buy one later when I could learn how to work on it and have a place for it.

Well, the time came to buy another one in 2005 or 06. Found one in Wyoming for under 500 with a mostly straight body and almost no rust. Drove up, test drove it and bought it. The car made the drive back to SLC with a shot carb and stuck caliper.

Here is how I received her.

Taken from my 3tcgarage thread. This was right after getting my house in July of 2009 and the only stuff that had been done is taking things apart.

So, I have had this car for years and bought it only as a project......so no need to rush. After buying her she has mostly sat until the last year where I have been taking things apart and gathering parts. I have acquired almost everything needed to have her running with EFI and edis. Just need new injectors and to quit being afraid of breaking something. She will be running a MS for fuel and spark. I have started running 3/8's fuel line and have a Walbro to supply it when I get her running.

The overall plan is to get her running NA and learn how to tune. When that is done I will get a turbo and exhaust and tune that. All will be done on the original motor. I hope to get the tuning down well enough before blowing the motor :) Once the engine blows, or figure I have a good hang on the tuning, I will be rebuilding the motor and stripping the whole car down. Figure I want to have fun with her running before taking her back down.

Here are some current pics of her state................I have neglected her for way too long.

Copied from my 3tcgarage build thread. June 10, 2010.

So, the car idles reasonably well considering what tuning experience I have (none).

Current things to immediately address:
Clean up and reassemble my AE strut towers (getting new pads and calipers for fathers day :) ). Followed by install.
Figure out why tuner studio shows obscenely high (lean) numbers. With power applied it shows weird reads in studio as well.
Fix the plumbing from my fuel tank so I can properly install the tank.
Figure out why my oil gauge appears to show no pressure.

So, here are the pics of how her motor sits. I realized after trying to route my wires that I really screwed up my wiring. It could have been so much better. Oh well, I will address it when I blow up the motor or tranny (which ever comes first).

Interior setup. Still needs cleaned up.

Battery location with temp battery. When I get her to a driving state I will get a dry cell.

Overall.

Relay box location. Not concerned with it be exposed to potential elements cause the car will only see good weather :)

FPR.

EDIS. The coil will be replaced by the coil setup off of a tercel. Prefer the cleaner look as seen in Sunray's pics.

Immediate plans and current status as of 01-24-2011:

Waiting for cash to add sump kit to current gas tank.
Taking the seat covers off the back seats and dying them black (Normal spray dye and RIT does not work).
I have new carpet that will be installed after I figure out how I am doing the radio and get different seats in.
Need to replace a wheel stud on the rear.
Want to start work on my dashboard. Fix cracks and add a 3 guage pod.
Replace dead wideband o2 sensor.
Smooth out metal around the tail lights.

Long term plans are to paint her dark purple, have the engine rebuilt with 87 MM pistons and such, turbo, W5X tranny and a rear end that will handle whatever power I decide I want. Right now I just want to drive her and learn to tune. My goal is to hit RMR and LHM Sports Park this year with the EFI tuned and learn to drive with the added power from EFI.

I will added the latest pictures when I get around to taking more.

Small update.

Just dropped my gas tank off at J-MAC. They will be adding a sump kit, cleaning and sealing.

I also ordered 4 6.5" MDF rings. I am going to be placing them on the door and back interior panels when I fiberglass them. This way I can have the speaker setup I want and stiffen up the door panels while I am at it.

So, by the time I get the tank back I hope to have my temp sensor/fan hooked up for cooling and troubleshoot my o2 plus make a heat sink for it. Lots of other odds and ends, but I would like to be able to pull her out of the garage by the end of March, under her own power :)

UtahSleeper

Well, time hasn't been too kind to me for working on her..............hope to change that soon.

Got my gas tank back all clean and sump kit added.
Got the MDF rings and cleaned off a spot in my garage to start glassing the door panel.

So, immediate goals are:
Install the tank and reconnect the fuel lines.
Make a decent bracket to hold the LC-1 under the car instead of dangling.
Hook up my fan and temp switch for it.

Also, is there a good way to clean out a motor that has been sitting for years?

Current status:
I have the driver side bolted down and the passenger seat needs a couple more tweaks.
Started figuring out wiring routes for the front door speakers I will install.
Started messing with fiberglass to reinforce the old door panels.
Cleaned/torched my o2 sensor in hopes that it fixes it's weird behavior.
Installed my modified gas tank.
Tweaked my trigger sensor bracket to have the sensor closer to the trigger wheel.

Things to do:
Finish passenger seat.
Make holding bracket for the LC-1.
Finish door panels with speaker rings.
Install new gauges.

Current pics of the car and little pieces.

Well, she finally moved out of the garage today under her own power. Still haven't installed my radiator fan, so I didn't let her run too much. That and I screwed up the soldering on my relay box so she didn't always want to start. Found out it is the main power relay socket, so one more thing to address.

Proof that she left the garage today lol.

Current status of the car:
I drove her about 100 feet. First time she has been driven since I bought her. It was a nice change.
I have also started wiring up the radio harness and running wires for some gauges. Want to get that done before installing the new carpet.

Is most of the EFI system custom or from another vehicle?

UtahSleeper
07-19-2011, 10:41 PM
A mix I guess. Walbro FP, generic ebay FPR, paradise racing manifold (I believe), BBK throttle body (70 MM), ford v8 injectors, 88 camry throttle cable, GM air and coolant temp sensor, LC-1 wideband. That with the lovely MS2 :)

CollapsedNut
07-20-2011, 12:36 AM
I guess with a MS you can use about anything you want. What about that crank position setup?

UtahSleeper
07-20-2011, 04:04 PM
Ford EDIS off an escort and a crank trigger wheel from DIY auto tune. Getting the crank wheel and sensor on was a bit of a custom job, but not too bad.

Will the MS control the EDIS? That seems like a nightmare to get running.

So, I have driven the car a bit and she still needs alot of work. Battery doesn't appear to be getting charged. Not sure if that is caused by the battery relocation or the Saturn alternator since I don't know if it works either. Also still need to try and tune her a bit and replace the windshield. Tried to take her to a meet today, but after 5 miles and a popped fuel line, I decided she needed to go back home and rest lol.

Well, here is the pics from the last bit of work.

Nice! Another MS setup. How did the first startup go? Are your injectors high z or low z? Do you have any noise issues with the crank position sensor? How does it idle compared to the old carb setup?

I really like the way your work is going.

The first startup had went great surprisingly. It had questionable gas and start after 5 or 6 turns. Made me very happy.
Injectors are high impedance (assume what your asking).
No noise with the crank position. Think that was some of the wiring that I put shielding on.
The idle is far better then the old carb. She starts almost instantly and keeps a pretty consistent idle. The only issue I have is the TPS never shows the same starting point. So, after I set it it, then sometimes I will get a negative or positive 1 o2 on my idle position without touching the gas. I have talked to a few people and this issue doesn't only appear to be seen by me.

Good to hear, gives me hope that my car will start on MS.
Yeah I was going to ask how getting the injector pulse width set up on low z injectors went, but you have high z so you don't have ro worry about that.
I've always heard that MS gives better idle than most stock setups. Are you using any fast idle valves or stepper motors?
I haven't heard about the TPS readings. Mine comes back the same everytime. Mind you it's only bench testing and doesn't deal with throttle stops or return springs yet.

Thank you for the information. I'm liking your thread.

Cheers,
Berg

So, my goal to hit RMR isn't happening this year, but I am ok with that. Just want to tune it now and figure out what makes the occasional clunk in the back. Probably a shot bushing or something. That and still need to fix my main relay socket cause I hit enough of a pot hole the power cuts out. Simple fix at the time, move the relay a little and power comes back.

Not sure if he will have time any time soon. He is being transferred to Nashville to setup a sheet metal department at the airport there.

So, small update and random pics.

- Tuning is still getting better, but I hit a wall in the 4k range and 5k. Due to weather and time I haven't done too much driving. Plus my laptop wont stay charged long enough to get to a good road.
- I think my brake booster developed a leak. There is moisture on the frame and surrounding area's under the MC. Plus I am losing brake fluid.
- Still need to finish my door panels.
- The dash my friend glassed for me turned out well, but I had no patience to sand it since I want to redo the whole dash area. So it got a light sanding and a few coats of bed liner.

Small update:

Finally installed an overflow tank for the corolla. Now that I can allow the cooling system to build normal pressure I expect hoses to start popping lol.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2012-04-09/009.JPG

Got most of the front interior painted and reassembled. Now the interior just needs to wait for me to have cash for new autometer gauges.

And Milla finally has a back seat. Mostly there for when I drive her more and want to take my kids with.

Well, small update, but an update.

First, for Xmas I treated myself to a new instrument panel for Milla.
A Nexus 7 that I will have communicate via bluetooth and make a dash layout in tunerstudio.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-01-22/001.JPG

Second, I am working on making a small speaker enclosure for the doors as the open air setup had ZERO bass. Hoping this works, but also gives practice with fiberglass for when I try to make a FG hood or vents.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-01-22/002.JPG

Third and last, I took the control arms and sway bar off the front for the purpose of replacing bushings and cleaning/paint. Anything I take out I try to clean up.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-01-22/003.JPG

Also, working on stripping the car down soon for paint. She needs it and this will be my learning project with a real air compressor and gun. Hopefully no more rattle cans for me LOL!!!

Well, time for another small update as I get her ready for spring.

Removed the gauge cluster to start sorting out the details of mounting the dash and also have to rewire the lights for turn, high beam and oil.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-03-03/015.JPG

This is how she looks after cutting the springs alittle. She will eventually get coilovers, but a little later.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-03-03/016.JPG

Cheap ebay steering wheel. This one probably wont withstand the heat of the summer, but it will work till I recover the old wheel.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-03-03/017.JPG

And this is my attempt at mocking up a mount for the Nexus 7. Still real early stages, but it's a start.

Well, small update as I try my hand at custom shit lol.

Here is how my woman sits, waiting to get back to driving. She still starts with no issue, just been sitting dormant for most of the winter as I try a few things.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-03-13/001.JPG

Here is the speaker pods fleeced. Hopefully tomorrow I will atleast get resin on them to give me structure to glass.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-03-13/002.JPG

My current progress on the nexus dashboard. Slow rolling here. Still need to add a few layers of glass, sand, prime, sand, etc lol.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-03-13/003.JPG

And the LED's I will be using for the turn signals, high beam and oil indicator.

Using a tablet instead of a cluster is brilliant, so you must have standalone engine control that can interface with the usb?

UtahSleeper
03-15-2013, 04:10 PM
I am running a MS2 and I bought a bluetooth adapter from EFI Analytics, so no wiring needed for com side. Apparently most tablets can't work with MS right now due to some differences in communication.

Wow, I would be very hesitant to use bluetooth for reading the cluster information. But I doubt that many tablets (even google tablets) ship with the necessary kernel bits to do Serial->USB so there's not much choice.

Still, I bet it'll look freakin' awesome when you get it finished

To start, here is the interior with the new steering wheel and tablet dash. Not turn on at the moment.

http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-03-24/003.JPG

The front is right where I want it though.
http://www.mutsoftware.com/corolla/forumPics/2013-03-24/005.JPG

And here are the speaker pods. Still need to sand the shit out of them and cover or paint, after I iron out how I want to mount them/

So you're cutting the coils? Why not get a good set of coil over sleeves or actual coil overs?

UtahSleeper
03-25-2013, 05:45 AM
Thats in the eventual plans. But good coilovers are 1k assembled, and thats just for the fronts, or honda sleeves with good springs are still a few hundred. Plus, the rears have no DIY coilover option with the spring shock setup.

This was just a winter screw around option since I couldn't justify money on car parts with xmas and everything. The plan over this summer and winter is get weld on sleeves, find a junkyard set of struts, and make some real coilovers for the front. This is my toy/learner car, so spending money over the holidays was not an option lol.

My rear options are also limited. Either buy an expensive kit.....or cut springs and get a good short stroke shock.

Well, small update. Was driving my rolla to work today and apparently a hose decided to give up, and with that, my HG appears to have decided to quit. I am going to check a little further when I get her towed home. She still runs, but pretty sure I saw coolant in the oil.

If the HG is dead/warped head, my plan will still be to paint her soon, but then let her sit till I can get a 5vzfe..........could be awhile cause my Alltrac needs to run before I do that swap.

JESUS H...what did you paint that with? a roller? :eek_001::scared:

Im going to just give you a hard time in fun here, but I think you will end up unhappy with that in the long run. NOW is the time to correct it. BEFORE you start putting it back together.

Take some 320Grit and wetsand that all smooth again. You dont need to strip it ALL off just use it as a base. I know sanding sucks, beleive me I know, but it has to be done. You could maybe get away with a DA sander and a light touch but doing it by hand is good practice anyway.

Once its all smooth again, you can recoat it with your top coat. If you are using a cheap spray gun it looks to me like you have the flow settings all wrong. Did you use an HVLP gun with a compressor that cant put out enough volume of air? Thats what it looks like to me. It helps to do some test runs on carboard first to get the gun setup right. There are lots of good tutorials around. I'll be happy to share some if you like.

If you are rattle painting then you are not laying it on wet enough or following your wet edge. Large panels are tough to do with rattle can because they spread so much dust on the parts of the panel you arent spraying on that when you get to that part of the panel you might as well be spraying over sand. Paint smaller sections at a time and rewipe your panel with a tack clotch before you move on to the next section.

That much orange peel in your finish is going to be hard to make look good. However, depending on what kind of paint you used, if you lay it on thick enough, anything can be color sanded and polished enough to look decent.

seriously, feel free to hit me up for painting tips. Im happy to share my experiences.

The reason I am just accepting how it is for now is cause I have took the garage for the last 2 months and the woman kind of wanted her spot back lol. This is, in reality, a 3 to 4 year paint job. By then I plan to be stripping the car fully down for new rear end, drive shaft, under coating, brakes and new engine.

I am not all happy with how it came out, but I am happy she is one color. And I willl probably hit you up for info as I just did research and rushed :/

Facime
07-28-2013, 12:53 AM
fair enough. But what DID you paint it with?

UtahSleeper
07-28-2013, 04:29 AM
125 gallon craftsman compressor. HVLP gun, but probably considered a cheap gun. I would say better then a harbor freight one, but not much(Husky).

Also, there are parts where I feel it laid down great and have a mirror like finish. My problem is alot of the car is inconsistent. Some parts are smooth. Some have orange peel. Some (the roof) feels like sand paper lol.

Facime
07-28-2013, 06:02 AM
I bet I have the same Husky gun (home depot under $80), and my compressor is only 20Gal (but high horse with good CFM).

I painted this fender and hood with it:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/374199_292720927433965_98381365_n.jpg

It looks to me like you had too MUCH air and not enough paint or your pattern was too narrow. You need a pressure gauge AT the gun and need to get an accurate reading. My paint specified 15-20lbs at the gun. I spent a fair amount of time testing my gun and pattern on cardboard doing drip tests. The other very important thing is following the paints guidelines for flash time. Too long between coats and you will compound your orange peal and too short you will have runs and sags. Were you worried about runs and sags when you shot it? You maybe just didnt lay it down heavy enough (the places its better is probably an area you went over with more than one stroke as you tried to get coverage).

Other factors are temp, humidity, reducer ratios, distance from surface with the gun, speed of stroke (giggity), and angle of the gun to the surface.

The paint job on that truck was my very first attempt with an HVLP gun and 2k paint, so its not like Im some kind of pro. What I DID do though is I spent several days watching videos and reading guides, then practicing with small batches then reading some more and going back and retesting.

Dont get me wrong, Im not trying to dis your work. Like you said, its experience for next time. I still think you could make it lots better without TOO awful much effort or expense. Like I said, just a good block sand with wet or dry followed by another couple of coats...

by the way, what kind of paint did you use? Urethane single stage?

UtahSleeper
07-28-2013, 07:29 PM
Urethane single stage.

I was worried about runs when I shot it. I didn't get many runs either. My biggest issue was consistency on my shooting. When I had to reach to lay down anything, it came out like crap.

Example, my rear hatch. The part that is the furthest back looks great. No orange peel and high gloss. The top part that was furthest from me when painting has almost a matte finish. Just wasn't very at keeping a consistent distance and angle.

I thank you for all the advice and I may try and touch up later, but no point in sanding it all down since I screwed up and left random batches of old paint before painting. Never realized how much the new paint would emphasize it.

Well, small update for Milla.

I got a good car cover and moved her out of the garage for the up coming winter, so figure I should post some current state pics.

She still runs and drives. I am just slowly working on speaker pods and interior. Nothing special till the day she is fully stripped and given a full overhaul.

Well, small up date.

She now has a cheap eBay header on. Can't do much till I atleast get a test pipe cause my o2 sensor is only reading fresh air due to position to the end of the header.

And here is the old exhaust. Finally removed the small ass exhaust.

So, small bit of knowledge gained today.

Last week I add my ebay header and today added a pipe to it so my o2 sensor would get some readings. Now when idling I went from 14.7 to 16. I did not expect such a drastic change to how the motor runs just by opening the exhaust. So now I need to get some tuning time in. Should be interesting.

Facime
06-08-2014, 07:20 PM
you bet that will happen. Something as small as an exhaust leak can cause a "LEAN ON BANK X" code. A whole new, more open exhaust changes the tune a lot. Like putting a custom exhaust on a bike and needing to re-jet accordingly.

Hey have you tried to do any wet sanding/polishing on that paint? You might be able to get some pretty decent results with some careful color-sanding.

So, here is an update to where Milla stands and what the future holds for her.

She recently lost alot of compression in cylinder 3 and runs better when I remove spark from the cylinder. Never got around to a leak down test as I have decided this motor has served its time and done well for the years of abuse it had taken from previous owners. With the engine in the current state a new plan for its future has been planned out.

After Sept 13 I will start removing the EFI and parts for the 3tc as her future self is going to be a 1UZ.
Once I have removed and sold some of the parts I am going to finish my Celica Alltrac.
Once the Alltrac is driveable and in a good spot then the Corolla will get a complete overhaul so I can finally do things right:
-Redoing the dashboard to move the tablet more to the center.
-New seats
-Non eBay crap steering wheel
-1UZ w/ W55 or 58 trans
-Hopefully RP steering
-Redo the paint correctly, but the same color
-Get MS working with the 1UZ
-New rear end and drive shaft
-Coilovers all the way around

So, with that list this willl be a long time project, atleast a couple years. I am partially making this post so I can remember what I need to do lol.
