I'm getting my 1ZZ-FE replaced soon because of an oil burn problem. I was wondering if a cold air intake is a good cheap first upgrade?

It wont do much for your power output but it will make your engine sound cool at mid and WOT. The placebo effect from the sound alone makes your car feel quicker.

i was looking at about $300. that shouldnt be too much right?

Thats a lot to spend on a CAI for a GT.

You should save your money and get a GTS engine and swap it, or just trade your car in on a GTS to be honest.

Get the cheap ebay intake and just buy a good K&N filter

Unless you got too much money I see no reason for doing that, it wont give you much if anything at all on a 4cylinder engine under 2.0L.
The only thing is that it feels faster because of the increase in noice.
Save you money and get a supercharger kit/turbo or high compression pistons or something if you want more power. maybe a remap.
na engines are very expensive and little bang for the buck when it comes to tuning especialy such small engines.
if you are going to replace your engine try to find a second hand one from a celica T-sport those have about 40HP more as standard.

We don't get the t-sport here. The only comparable thing we have is the 2zzge from the Elise and 7th gen GTS in the states.

The OP was asking about a cheap first mod. Cold air intake is cheap. A turbo OR supercharger kit is not. Especially since the OP has oil burn issues, that would mean an engine and transmission swap (complete with ECU and wiring loom), but also the turbo or supercharger and supporting mods (IE: forged internals). That is expensive.
