they are hit or miss.

some can hold 350.

Some grenade at just alittle above stock power limits.

s54 has a better chance of surviving than the s53. You should just plan to upgrade to the e153 and drive the s54 till it breaks. I have the s54 and its too short for the 3s imo

Depends on driving style imo. If money is any kind of concern, I'd just drive what you've got till it breaks - if it ever does. Then swap it out at that time. Easy enough job on those cars, makes me somewhat jealous!

As long as you're not launching the car a lot and ragging on the trans then it can last forever. The S53 is the same internally as the S54. The only difference is the gear ratios.

Cool cool. If I do go the E153 route what do I need. I was looking all this up but I never found specifics

Hook, I'm pretty sure the s54 has dual cone synchros and the s53 doesn't.

actually depends on the year of the trans. 93 and up are dual cone.

Um... well the main thing for me is... I have a torsen LSD for the S54... cheap (Toyota). For the E153 I'd have to buy a quaife, which is... expensive. For the cost difference I can just keep replacing S54s.
