View Full Version : The $500 6GC

I officially own my fourth Celica, and my first 6th gen.
I'll have pictures up later, but for now here's a little background.

I am the third owner of this coupe. The car has been sitting since 2003, and has 103,000 miles on a rust- and damage-free body. The original engine was replaced with an imported 7AFE with around 30k.
I have taken the valve cover off, and I've got to say, that's one mightly clean engine.

So far, I have found these issues:

Shifter does not work right; I haven't found out if it's a missing bracket or if the lever/cable is just on wrong. I can pop the hood and manually move the lever to change gears.
O2 sensor wiring is cut/missing. I don't know if the connector is just tucked away or not.
A couple of wires near the transmission gear selector are cut/twisted together.
EGR valve is not installed; the pipe is connected to the wire, but it's all just dangling near the firewall
Engine wiring harness loom is unsheathed; I have to go through the harness and verify it is uncut.
There is an (aftermarket?) alarm, with no keyfob... or just a random blinking red light.
Odometer and tachometer do not work. Gas and temp gauges work. Probably has something to do with the wonky wiring harness.
Sliding sunroof tilts, but does not retract.
There are a couple of random wiring bits in the plastic crash pad. Probably alarm related, meaning it's definitely getting taken out.
Passenger side front fender is black, while the rest of the car is white. Will need to sand it down, prime and paint.
The rear bumper cover is missing, as the previous owner was going to install a body kit but received the kit for a liftback instead of the coupe.

Uh, pics?

You could have most of the above fixed in a day though. Not bad for five-hundy

Uh, pics?

You think he'd know by now??

I said I'd post pics later. I need to find my SD card, that is not in my camera, laptop, or my Wii.

Now is later.

I've got a sort of alarm system on the MR2 but no fob, and as far as I know, it's factory. The system arms when I lock the doors, and a red blinking light, and the system disengages when I unlock the doors... or something like that.

its the switch, clean the contacts.

ohh and...

its the switch, clean the contacts.

ohh and...

It is also often found to be the gears stripped out. Well documented.

Okay, I can't find my SD card. I know this is worthless without pics, but here's the update:

Cruise control cable is broken.
EGR valve isn't even hooked up. This is actually why I came inside, so I can see where the hell it bolts to since it's only connected by the wire.
The cable on the neutral safety switch needs to be adjusted.
Sunroof issue was easy to fix, just replaced the 10A dome fuse.
Found 2 Viper key fobs in that little pocket near the e-brake, and they both work.
Found a random broken wire near the driver side headlight. It was poking out from behind the fuse box, but I have no idea what it goes to. It's a very tiny gauge wire, maybe 16g?
I have only found one spot with surface rust, and that's where the battery goes... sanded it down and primed it with white primer. The box/hold down is missing.

Okay, here are the pictures! Did not know the camera was in widescreen mode.

hood off, running through fuses

it's sat for a while, so the car's pretty dirty. I wiped it down with liquid clay bar, and it's much cleaner now

this side's good

random ass fender

leather seats

104k miles

gotta install a stereo

other than that, ever piece is there

already reppin'! I wiped the seats down with leather and vinyl cleaner, which took away the haze

here's a random wire... no idea what it goes to

transmission wiring unloomed, haven't even touched it yet

no idea about this one. they're just twisted together

O2 sensor connector is missing

shitty Viper install. I went through it and made better connections and hid the wires

sunroof opens!

and here's the hood

cool seat

It's an autofail!

I keed. :)

Wanna bet that random ass wire next to the fuse box has somehing to do with the alarm and the hood trigger? I actually enjoy the puzzle that is getting a new Celica and figuring out the random wiring. I first get into the mindset of the previous owner, and have a chuckle as I discover more nonsense.

01-10-2011, 05:50 PM
Nice! For $500 that is a steal.

01-10-2011, 08:38 PM
I suspect those seats are synthetic leather, Real leather is almost never trimmed like that and doesnt pucker the same way.

any yeah thats a steal for the price if it runs at all.

01-10-2011, 11:03 PM
Yeah, it's synthetic leather, which is awesome 'cause they don't have the same wear and tear.

I fixed the wiring on the transmission. The wire was just missing a chunk out of it, and was replaced with another piece. I took the wire out of the harness connector, soldered in a new section of wire of the correct gauge, heat shrank my new wire, and loomed it up.

Just having an issue with an apparently missing shift cable bracket. I can pull the cable off the neutral safety switch, switch gears inside the cabin, and see the cable move... but when it's installed, the cable just moves where it wants.

I can't see where the EGR valve pipe bolts to, either. I've looked in the BGB and in ShopKey, and I can't find it. Any 7AFE owners with a camera want to take a few pictures of the sensors and whatnot on the back of their engines?

theres a port on the head its supposed to bolt onto. you can just delete it, if u want to know how ill tell you

PM sent. Any updates?
