Just watch the ISO on that camera, and you'll be impressed with what you can crank out. That was the first DSLR I could afford, and I loved the heck out of it. Tamron has some good lens rebates come spring you can sometimes couple with discounts at places like Samy's Camera. I am still happy with my Tamron 17-35mm 3 years later.

ISO is essentially film speed. Since its a DSLR and doesnt have film its a relativity index but functions the same way. When talking film the lower the ISO the slower the film. Slower film = smaller/lesser grain but cant shoot in lower light conditions, Faster film = more grain but can handle low light conditions. Outside of using it for artistic effect, you generally want the lowest ISO you can manage for the lighting conditions. (or you can set it for auto ISO)

As for lenses and f-stops, basically people are referring to the lenses largest aperature. The larger the opening, the smaller the F-stop number, and the more light the lens is capable of letting through. In simple terms, the lower the number the "faster" the lens. This comes into play again in low light situations and in fast action when teamed with the corresponding shutter speed.

suggest a tripod for some shots, this way you can run a very low ISO, even at night.
