I bought this car with the engine already in it. What I can tell is it is a JDM per it has -no- egr system. Now the car the engine is in is a 93 celica, would that mean that the 3sgte in there is 2nd or 3rd gen? I was also told the the engine was a 92, it is what the owner said. is there a way to tell by the number on the block/head if it is a 3rd or 2nd gen and if it is a early or later motor... thank you a lot.

A picture would be the best way to do this. Even a phone pic.

Is there a turbo charger on it?

The engine code should be on the timing belt cover

frequently mechanics will put a JDM 5SFE or JDM 3SFE into cars here in the US. I doubt that there is 3SGTE in there especially if who you bought it from did not specifically say so.

This is posted in the Forced Induction forums. There is a turbo involved.
OP is specifically asking if there's a way to look up the engine year by a serial code.

There should be a code stamp on the block, but I don't think there has ever been a place to decode it.

I was going to say, I see numbers on the block... I was able to go out and get a few quick picks of the block and TB they have numbers stamped on them. The head is at a shop getting glass beaded but I I know the number on that is like 1111-8888.... I wonder if the ECU number would help me at all, I will have to get it tomorrow.

Here are the pics....The block is getting a little rusted but its going out next week to get another bath and bored 20 over so then it will be stored in my closet.

I do not doubt you, could you give me the hints you seen to know that? I would like to know for future reference.

the second gen turbo is a twin scroll entry (the two openings seen in the third photo), and the vacuum ports on the TB are arranged slightly different than my first gen TB.

An an MR2 Trottle body has a different Adapter so it came from a Celica.

Don't see where there's indication that it's an RC. Did it not come with an intercooler? That's probably the easiest way to tell (obviously assuming the intercooler wasn't switched).

It had an intercool on top of the engine.

Well yeah, but what did it look like? Was it an Air to air, water to air? Got a pic?

i highly doubt that is an rc. what is the throttle body boot diameter. rc=2.75 inch, 165=2.5inch, i think 185=2.25

Its not an RC. Its a Gen2. It could very well be a 92. Its definately not a Gen3.

You should have posted pictures of it before you tore it apart.

The main way to tell between a Gen2 or Gen3 in this instance would be the valve cover. Post a pic of your valve cover.
