View Full Version : Is there a FWD, 5SPD and LSD tranny that can bolt to the 3SGTE?

As the title says, I would like to know if there is a FWD, 5spd and LSD tranny that can be bolted on a 3SGTE.

I've searched a lot on MR2OC, 6gc.net and here and I've come up with only 2 solutions :

-E153 LSD from an MR2 that is converted to FWD.
-E153 from a Camry/Solara (don't know the years or model trims) and swap the differential with a MR2 LSD one.

Is there a solution that can merge those both options?

BTW, my car is a 1991 ST184 with a S53 tranny that is seriously grinding on 1st and 2nd because of all those 1/8 mile pass. I'm looking for an upgrade in the same time (getting an LSD for more traction).

I'm waiting your inputs!

I went with solution # 1

E153 LSD from an MR2 that is converted to forward facing shift forks. It is already a FWD transmission. This conversion is really pretty easy.

Didnt some of the Solara trans come with the LSD from the factory?

I think so Grot.

It'd be easier IMO to source the MR2 trans with or without LSD. I was turned on to mine from Luni here. The conversion for the mr2 trans really isn't that hard at all. Took about 4 or 5 hours total (if you exclude the fuckups).

Thanks all for the comments!

I would prefer to buy a FWD (front-engine) tranny like the Camry/Solara one. And an MR2 E153 LSD isn't cheap... I'm sure I can find the Camry one for a lot cheaper. If someone could chime in about if the Solara is LSD or not, it would be nice!

What's your budget like? You can find them on mr2oc at a reasonable price. I picked mine up with a lsd unit installed for under a grand.

Lol, my budget is : the cheapest, the better... I know it's not the way to go, but funds are low... It's not critical for now, I can keep my S53 for next year maybe, I'm simply looking for options.

I've looked into MR2OC FS section. Under 1k is possible. The problem will be shipping fees, I live in Quebec...

Anyway, thanks all for your inputs!

There was no factory LSD for the Camry E153 only MR2. There are aftermarket LSD's available for the E153 but they are around $1000. So you better off with the MR2 tranny.

You're right, I've looked into it a little deeper and I came to the same conclusion.

So, I'll start looking at the junkyards for a '97-'03 Camry Solara V6 5spd tranny and I'll save my money for a MR2 LSD differential (which can be found for not too much $$$). I'll deal with the axle/shift cable after.

Thanks all!

JDM Engine Land in Toronto has a JDM MR2 LSD tranny I believe for $650

I think you're all forgetting that the MR2 LSD is a crappy viscous LSD...

I'd rather save the money on a NON-LSD trans and buy a torsen or mechanical LSD.

personally i used a 99 solara trans with a quiafe. very nice but not cheap. you are not going to get LSD for cheap that bolts on.
and the solara can come with lsd but you'll have to find a trd supercharged one. good luck.

10-21-2010, 07:48 AM
... how the hell does that work? It never came that way (TRD Supercharger is a dealer install item and so is the TRD LSD (Clutch type for that application IIRC))...

tecker184 bought a 4th gen st215 motor also with a fwd tranny. this one is believed to have a factory lsd in it. if iirc, the code for it is e-150f. look up his thread

I'm in the same spit as this guy but I think Ima stick with the 5s tranny then when the money comes I'll do the awd conversion but with the mr2 tranny would you be able to go over 350whp if it stays fwd?

10-31-2010, 12:51 PM
the s54 (technicly is called somthing else i cant remember ATM) out of the beams had a helical LSD.
you can also add the LSD from the mkIII mr2 to a s54.

10-31-2010, 02:48 PM
i also bought a E153 mr2 turbo LSD tranny for my swapped 3sgte RC...its gonna be installed in a few weeks....i heard that the e153 lsd transmission is a good option for fwd with high HP's

actually if you want to do it right, get the AWD tranny from the ST205 and convert it to FWD. all you need is the Diff from an MR2 tranny and the housing cover. this is covered all over this site and MR2OC. the reason i say use the AWD tranny is because the shifter linkage is on the back side so your cables will work. you need to make changes on the MR2 version because the linkage is on the front of the tranny

11-06-2010, 09:09 AM
Why the ST205 VS the Solara V6?

11-06-2010, 09:14 AM
the mr2 lsd tranny is converted to fwd and to work with my cables

11-10-2010, 08:55 AM
supercharged solara e153's had a lsd to handle the boosted engine, but a am pretty sure they were helical just not as good a quaife's atb

11-10-2010, 04:09 PM
they had mr2 stock helicals in the trd e153 trans.

11-10-2010, 05:30 PM
I don't think it may have come with an LSD version, but what about the ST202 gearbox? I know it is a direct bolt up, and the ratios may not be that far off....I've heard some ppl talk about this but have not seen anyone do it yet.

11-10-2010, 06:10 PM
202 is a "s" series tranny.

11-10-2010, 09:27 PM
I'm not familiar with the jargon Mafix, bro. Does that mean it cannot bolt up?

11-10-2010, 09:37 PM
it will bolt up but it is a weak trans

11-11-2010, 07:55 PM
meant for non turbo cars, i am pretty sure it can take about 300 whp possibly more but u will see if u do things right thats not a hard number to break, hence its not hard to break that trans

11-11-2010, 09:08 PM
no kidding, lol

11-26-2010, 02:02 PM
Don't use the Solara Trans unless you have over 400whp. The gearing is taller than the MR-2 and will make your car slower. When I was at 430 whp I had the S54 trans in with a TRD Helical LSD. It did ok but probably just a little too much power for the gearing. Get a MR-2 with a good LSD for under 400whp and Solara with a good lsd for over 400whp.

also depends on tire size and what not.
