I've been trying to gauge a good price for a 1997 celica ST, the problem is there pretty rare, and even harder to gauge a actual price on them.

168k miles, not much on the 7afe engine really. clutch replaced 1 1/2 years ago manual transmission (that's a plus). He wants 3500, seems maybe a tad bit high considering the mileage.

If the car has no major problems, no major rust (meaning minor surface rust on wheel well). How much would you pay for it? I tried to look on autotrader and craigslist for a similar car. No luck really, usually the celica's have something wrong with them, dent, decent rust, something.

It's silver, burns almost no oil. Let me know guys thanks for the feedback in advance.

I bought mine in august of 2009 for 4000. No rust, 119xxx miles, 2.2L GT, 5sp.

I got raped on mine though as the motor blew 3 weeks after I bought the car. Luckily, motor replacement is not foreign to me, but you still should add 1000 to that price.

I hope that helps.

I was just telling you what I paid for mine. I would offer him 3k to see if he bites... It'll be worth it if he will let it go for that.

Post up some pics of the car and we can help make a more informed decision.

He won't go lower then 3,500 asked him a couple times lol. Here are some pics.

Oh and why did your engine blow up? I think it's worth 3500 if there are no leaks and it checks out good. I just wanted to get other peoples opinion before i went to check it out.

It looks like its in pretty good shape! It looks like its a 25th anniversary edition.... I might give him the 3500 that he's asking for....

My motor gave out because of oil starvation in cylinder 3. That caused excessive wear on the rod bearing until it finally ended up pancaking out of the journal. Basically, it was b/c of a negligent previous owner.

Again, the choice is up to you....

Thanks for the feedback, people always abuse cars, that's why it's so hard to find one in good shape. I can swap engines in too, so if it blows not the end of the world, but would defiantly suck!

What are the options?

i bought my 1992 STX with ~240k miles (my first Celica) for $1900 and really feel like I might have paid maybe as much as $500 too much - but that is only based on what I have seen cars going for here on CrelicaTech. This car also has a five speed and that was part of what made me buy it - so few Celica 5-speeds were available at that time.

I can say that this car has ABSOLUTELY NO rust at all - a perfectly straight body - an engine bay that is as "clean as a whistle", and it runs like a watch - really - this car with it's high miles is a "rock" of reliability (4AFE engine). The R-12 A/C will still freeze you out on a 100 degree day.

All that being said - it is all manual - windows, locks, no sunroof, no cruise control - and also a coupe too.

An ST is a great car - but not nearly so much as a GT or a GTS if it is not a hatch with a sunroof and some power options - IMHO.

$3800 IS a stiff price - unless there are some or many of the options I listed above.

Don't worry about the 168K - if you check the thing out and determine that it has been taken care of - the thing is just in the "middle of it's life" with that mileage.

my 94 st that was neglegcted most of its life its running strong but its starting to burn a lil oil but i run it hard and its got 214,000 miles on it

though its been more reliable than my other 2 5th gens, its more comfortable and roomy than a 5th gen as well. As well as lighter.

its a good car, its run with the gt's you can put the gt stuff on a 6th gen st easier than u can a 5th

if i get another one it will be a 6th gen gt hatch just for conveinience sake

though mine was 800 dollars but it needed body work and had 176,000 miles on it

if you got to my project and look up "joes other celica" you can see what all i upgraded, replaced, and whatnot.

yeah, i could replace a bumper or fender, but i keep looking at 6th gens with rotted wheel wells, or almost rusted through rocker panels...

If the rocker panels and wheel wells are clean, i can forgive a ugly dent or two. But come on whois going to buy a 6th gen with rust coming from the inside out on the rocker panel from not being cleaned properly. Or rusted through wheel wells. Maybe for 1,500 but not more then that.
