2000 celica gts vvtl-i

problem:1) every time i downshift from 5th to 4th, the gear grinds.
2) when im cruising on neutral around 75KM/h+ and go to 4th, the gear grinds

my solution? i always have to shift to 3rd first before putting it on 4th

the thing is, i dont have to run in the 3rd gear.
i can basically just step on the clutch
downshift to 5th to 3rd (while holding the clutch and without running the 3rd, since itll kill my engine)
and go straight to 4th

this gears wont grind.

what have i done?
1)when i bought the 2nd hand it was already like that.
2) i change the transaxle oil, it did not help.
3)i tried stepping on the clutch deeper, and nop..

any other theories?
or reccomendations on how i can make the switching gears smoother?
p.s why do i smell burning oil everytime i do lift?

im sad to say that your 4th to 5th syncro is most likely bad. other than rebuilding it i dont think there is much you can do unless you want to put a bottle of syncromesh in there and see if it helps.

yeah I would try using a better tranny fluid and if still same results then its time for a rebuild.

The C60 transmission is known for the syncros in 3rd and 4th going out. SyncroMesh doesnt do much, and from my experience, it made mine worse. If you can find an 03+ C60 you dont have to worry, but the older ones have bad syncros. Rebuild is the best option. i have 165k miles and mine is still on the road, but i grid 2nd to 3rd, 5th to 4th, and 4th to 3rd. if im not careful downshifting to 3rd, it will pop out even.

As was said, bad synchros are haunting you. They're haunting me too. I think my only good synchros are 1st and 6th. I need a rebuild yesterday. I need a garage first though.

I thought it was the shift fork design on the early c60 transmissions that caused 3rd and 4th gear to suck a fat one..

nope nothing to do with the fork. its the synchros and gears themselves. the link to NC.org explains all. you must replace the 3rd and 4th gear, syncros and the slider. its a total of about 400 in parts. then labor :(

I have someone willing to sell me a bad tranny that im gonna rebuild (if possible) then put in my car and rebuild my current one and sell that. i will speak more another time if that does work out.
