Will it work? I remember someone saying 91 through 97 will work but what about 98?

it should work. lots of work though and making a custom wiring harness and using the 98 ecu. i wouldnt do it

Bugs, would you mind giving a little more information as to WHY it's harder?

What change is there in 98 that makes it more difficult than 97?

It looks like bugs is saying wiring may be a PITA. So... is this implying that 91-97 uses the same wiring?

Seems like there will be some work involved but then again if you like it and want it bad enough it is possible, i personally would go with a 3sgte though, but tahts just me

hmm, it might not be as bad as i though. if all manifolds and sensors swap over from your engine than its plug and play basicly. if you wanna use the 98 manifolds and sensors you will need the harness and ecu to run it

The only realistic downside to the swap is going from ODB1 to ODB2. There would be a lot more wiring issues to deal with (ie; you might not only be needing the engine harness but the chassis harness aswell.)
Then there's the trouble that if you make it run, it might not even pass emissions or inspection if you have it.

well im not able to get this engine now anyways but i was just curious. Would it be possible to just swap heads and put everything on it from the 91 as in intake manifold so there would be the old hookups?

It should be plug and play(using your sensors) not much changed on the 5s. Intake manifold is the same ect.....maybe a few sensors connections here and there but over all its the same motor, neighbor has a 98 camry and his motor is exact same as mine is.

didnt the 98 camry have wasted spark?

Ive put a 2000 solora 5s and a 98 camry 5s in my celica and there wasnt anything hard about it aside from swapping this and that. use your sensors and harness and intake and youll be fine
