View Full Version : Before I pull my engine I need to know...

Why my car is running like absolute shit.. mechanical timing is dead on. spark advance is normal. New plugs, cap and rotor. IAC is working just fine... I pulled the plugs and there were black. I smell gas in my oil which makes me think I have a injector stuck open. Can I test this by taking the rail off and while leaving the lines to it, crank the engine over? It also is making this tapping sound that gets faster when I rev my car, i can hear it when I am under the hood listening. My car runs like shit, its a JDM 3sgte swapped into a 93 GT and I am just so sad. I've loved this car since I bought it. I dont wanna drive the escort :(. So if anyone has any other ideas/test to try, please let me know. I've made so many threads about my car and once one problem is fixed, another has appeared. I really appreciate any advice I get.

If you can hear a rapid ticking sound that is higher pitched and increases with rpm, look to the valve-train.

I dont really see a reason to pull the motor if you have it down to injectors?

Some times the grauments the little ring around the injectors break and havok happens... I would pull each one of the injectors and hook each one up to a battery see if they all fire.

Ah see, thats the thing... I don't know if it is the injector staying open causing gas in my oil which is causing my valve train not to lubricate properly causing a ping/knock I can supply power all day long but that will not tell me if it is stuck open. These 3sgtes are complicated damnit. Shadow you what I should look for when I take the valve cover off tomorrow?

Its really not that complicated as troubleshooting anything really, are you fouling out one plug or all 4???

If its just one plug swap the injector from that plug to another drive around on it for a while and see if the injector you moved it to is fouled out.... probled solved get a new injector.

Or send them to witchhunter for cleaning/balancing. (not a bad plan anyway after 20 years)

Its all four plugs, i checked out witchhunter.. never knew a site like that exsisted.

Yeah, I've used them a few times now. You get a full report back giving you before & after specs. You'd be amazed how out of spec even properly functioning injectors can be.

Will a stuck open injector be fixable you think or will they say I need a new one?

If anyone could repair it, it would be them.

Theyll tell you for sure whats up. If they cant clean it or get it working it will be evident in the flowtest results, and they will give a synopsis which will include if its messed up.

Today at the shop I did a fuel pressure test and found that I am running 49-52 psi at idle and when I rev the engine it stays the same. Does this seem to be a little high? If so I am thinking maybe a FPR or perhaps can it have something to do with the charcoal canister?

Check the BGB man. I know what base pressure is on a 3SGTE. Not sure about a 5S

Luni he has a 3sgte in his gt.

I did a compression test... do these look normal to you?

Oh snap. It IS a 3SGTE.

~38-42 is about normal for fuel pressure, and its a rising rate so you gain a PSI of fuel for each PSI of boost youre running.

And no theyre not normal. 1 and 4 are 175/165 and 2 and 3 are 140/145

Anything above ~128 is acceptable, as long as the variance between the cylinders isnt above ~10 psi (12-15 is OK in come cases)

Yours is BAD off.

If I had to guess Id say you either have fried ringlands on 2 and 3, OR, your timing is off somewhere. Or you have a bad valves or something like that.

Hmmm.. well my engine IS tapping in the valve cover and I am running really rich and rough with no power. I checked mechanical timing by lining the up the cam marks and I checked it and it was right at 0. Valves may be an issue I guess this means I do have to pull the engine out. *UPDATE* Just did a wet compression test on one of the cylinders that was low and it shot up to 180 and held there until i stopped cranking and then it slowly went back down to 145. Does this mean a valve job is needed?

Ahhh woot, I may not have to pul the engine... I did a check engine light check and got code 41 and 42. 41 is saying TPS in the unit, circuit or the ecu. anyone know a test I can do to test if the TPS is at fault and not the ECU? And the code 42 is I know is the SPD sensor which I am not worried about. The TPS being ad will cause my car to run rich and like shit right?

That would actually imply you have bad rings.

Yeah, if one shoots up when you do the wet test that's a bad sign. :(

Well its a positive though, it requires me to take the engine out listenig to berry white and doing it right.... the wiring harness looks like it was sent to a day care for three year olds to paste together for mommy.
