We have been talking about taking Ellie (our ST185, my daily) off the road for a while now because she is in bad shape and needs lots of love. So, on a whim, we picked up this ST165 over the winter. It was purchased to be my new daily.

We picked it up for a considerably lower price because the previous owner said the engine was knocking. He had done a compression test on it and the numbers were all over the place.

It has a 2nd gen 3sgte swap in it, with an st205 intercooler core, an aftermarket heatexchanger, and a 50 trim CT26. It also has a Motoria full 3" exhaust with the single tip. Otherwise, it is mostly stock.

On the way home from Indiana where she was picked up.

So, the previous owner said the motor was knocking. When Chris went to pick her up, it sounded more like valve tick. By the time she was trailered home and started up, the sound wasn't very audible anymore.

It takes multiple tries to start her up, and sometimes she will idle fine, sometimes not. After taking her for a spin, the car has zero boost. Once Chris had a chance to pull the turbo, this is what we found...

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab343/alltracNyx/Patty/0595e96f.jpg

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab343/alltracNyx/Patty/865a811d.jpg

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab343/alltracNyx/Patty/c569074b.jpg

We decided that we would replace the turbo and see how things went. After purchasing a gasket kit for the spare CT26 that we had laying around, Chris got the turbo on this past weekend, so we took her for a drive around the block, and she seemed to be running decent UNTIL she got up to op. temp.

(Quoting from Chris' thread here)
She was running rough at idle, stalling when the accelerator was pushed, etc. So, we pull her back into the barn and open up the hood to find oil EVERYWHERE. It was coming out of the BOV and putting liquid oil all over the engine bay.

So, the next step for us is a compression test, hopefully later this week. At this point, we're basically expecting to have to rebuild the bottom end. And if that's the case, we may be pulling the motor from Ellie and dropping it into Patty to get the ST165 on the road and the ST185 off the road sooner rather than later.

I guess the good news is that when things break, it's more of a reason to upgrade, right?

I just got home from working on Patty and the compression at operating temp across 1, 2, 3 and 4 are 150, 150, 150, 120 respectively. I thought that these numbers were alright (I know that they are supposed to be 180), so I took her for another spin.......

We've officially got rod knock. Its not very audible when you are just putting around, but when you get on it and at higher RPM's you can clearly hear the knocking. Also, we've still got oil coming out of the BOV so I think that we may have a bad ringland on cyl.4 as well....

So much for an easy fix....

Glad to see that car stayed in the community! At least in the end, it's all fixable. I'd say your diagnosis is probably right. New/rebuild bottom end I spose.

Is that turbo a ct26, not a ct20b?

Also out of curiosity, do you know if it is running the ST185 ECU, or if the P.O. used the 165 one?

Did they know what might have caused the issue in the first place?

alltracNyx
06-23-2010, 04:43 PM
We were glad to keep it in the community as well. We hadn't planned on purchasing another one so soon, but when gpmarzan's (AT.net) came up for sale, things just fell into place.

Definitely a CT26.

Chris (bloodMoney) will have to answer about the ECU, I'm not sure at all. I also don't think the PO knew the exact cause. He wasn't completely sure that it was knocking, but he was upfront about everything when he sold it to us.

The lesson we learned previously (with Ellie) was to buy one with NO rust since neither of us has much experience with body work. With my knowledge of electrical, and Chris' mechanical experience, dropping in a new motor is a whole lot easier than dealing with rust issues.

ChrisD
06-23-2010, 04:48 PM
Ahh yeah, rust. My nemesis. :D

I wonder if a piece of piston found it's way through the turbo to cause it to break like that. If you do find it's the 165 ECU, might be worth switching to the 185 one as it's tuned for the higher compression engine and would be somewhat safer. Looking forward to watching this project! :)

Nice car. I think when my hachi is up and reliable I'll start looking for an st165 too. I absolutely love the look of that car.

Just don't tell my wife cause she'll kill me if another 20 year old toyota follows me home. (can we keep it huh huh?)

Aww no mention of me anywhere. But yea a "project" is right. You should do this swap at my house, where there's more tools, and we can finally have a car we like being worked on here. Also that way you can't leave me out of shit, haha.

Lmao. Dennis, you know that you have been a big player in the work done on my cars.... I'm sorry that we failed to mention you here.... :(

I don't think that the idea of doing this work at your place is well thought out though. If we do end up pulling the motor out of Ellie and into Patty, one is going to be left without an engine.... Its easier to just do it a my place.

Thanks again for your help with the compression testing earlier this week. You can haz surprise buttseks nao :P

I hate to say it but I had the same thing happen a while back and well those peices of turbo like to make a mess of the engine. Ceramic CT26 does that when they get over boosted.

Might find some damage like pics in post #19 http://www.celicatech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43074&highlight=rizin%27s

I strapped a cheap turbokit on and ran good but the rod knock was the end.

Can't wait to see what is to come from this build.

So, I'm terrible at updating my project thread, but part of the reason is that I was hoping to have her back on the road before I posted any of it online. A lot has happened in 2.5 years: Chris finished college and got a job in his field, we got engaged at the dragon meet last year, I got a pretty big promotion at work, we're looking to buy a house this year, and of course the st165 has received quite a few upgrades.

After coming to the decision that the motor that came with the car would need a full rebuild, we decided that we would pull the motor from our st185 (that was rusting out and needs a ton of work) and swap it into the st165. Last January (2012), I was gearing up to have the car on the road in time for the 2012 dragon, so there were quite a few parts and many weekend trips to MI (where the car is stored) to get all of the work done.

miscellaneous stuffs
http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab343/alltracNyx/Patty/IMG_1618_zpsdf675cf8.jpg

Amongst other things, I also got Megan coilovers (Christmas 2011 was awesome!), upgraded to st185 calipers for a larger rotor with Hawk HPS pads and ATE Super Blue brake fluid, new Toyota rear spherical bearings, stage 1 Exedy clutch kit, and Enkei RP03 17x8 et35 wheels with Star Spec 215/40/17 tires. I feel like I am forgetting a few things, so hopefully I'll remember more later. With all the work at hand, I should have expected things to go wrong, but I didn't expect things to go wrong as soon as I got my wheels shipped.

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab343/alltracNyx/Patty/IMG_1624_zps05aa8e7c.jpg

I bought lightly used wheels from a guy on NASIOC, and they had absolutely no curb rash or damage on them. However, since he packaged them poorly, and didn't insure them with FedEx when he shipped them, three of the four wheels had major rash on the lips because the boxes looked like this:

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab343/alltracNyx/Patty/IMG_1625_zps5c452a17.jpg

After a short dispute with the seller, he ended up reimbursing me for part of the price, and I took the wheels to be refinished. Since I had to refinish at least three of the wheels, I took the opportunity to change the color, too (silver to gunmetal).

The moment of truth - her first drive after the transplant (dirty as hell!!).
http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab343/alltracNyx/Patty/IMG_1702_zps7646d8c7.jpg

At this point, it was Saturday at midnight the weekend before the dragon. We were supposed to leave Monday morning to head to Cappy's in ATL, and neither of us was feeling comfortable with taking the car on a 2,500 mile round trip drive without a proper shake down period. So after all of the pushing to finish her in time, we had to make a hard decision to not take her down to the dragon with us. Of course, this meant we would be taking the silver 6th gen, but that car had a bad vibration in the rear driver suspension that would not be good on the dragon. One of the rear control arms on the drivers side had a blown bushing, and we had replacements for the entire rear suspension, but not enough time to tackle the job (requires dropping the rear subframe). It took about 2-3 hours, a lot of hammering and cussing due to the stubborn rust holding the bolts on the control arm in place, but we finally got the 6th gen road ready and drove home on Sunday afternoon to pack and leave Monday morning to go to ATL.

I'll continue this story tomorrow.

After coming home from the dragon, we were a bit burnt out working on the st165, so it sat there for a little while. When we travelled to MI, we started taking her to some of the local meets to get some mileage on the swap before driving long distances. One of the issues that surfaced was code 52 for knock sensor fault. At first we thought the knock sensor was bad, or that something had happened to the wiring during the swap, and the ecu was reading no knock sensor signal at all. After driving the car in limp mode for a few weekends, the check engine light turned off on its own one night, and the car started hitting boost properly.

The second issue that surfaced was a sticky front driver brake caliper, not to the point that it is affecting the way the car drives, but definitely causing the brakes to heat up too much from almost constant friction. We took the caliper apart, and were able to manually move the piston just fine, but when it was reinstalled, it was still sticky. My original plan for this season was to upgrade to the st205 front calipers that we have sitting in our parts horde, but given time restrictions again, I just ordered a remanufactured st185 caliper, and we will troubleshoot with the new caliper once we get the car back.

The third issue was a pin-hole size tear in the rear driver axle boot. RTV was a quick fix, with plans to rebuild or replace the axles later.

By the end of the summer, we put the car away for the season. I forgot to mention that we also bought a new car in February 2012 (2011 Mitsunishi Lancer Ralliart Sportback), so between the new car and the 6th gen, we had more than enough on our hands. At the same time, we started getting more involved in our local car scene and it motivated me to really get the car on the road this year.

Over winter, I have slowly been accumulating more parts. My goal for the car is to get everything running stock with absolutely no leaks or issues. Eventually, I think we will rebuild the spare motor, upgrade to 3rd gen electronics, st205 calipers or some other big brake kit, and a few other goodies. Since I am not making any big upgrades to the car this year, we decided the tackle the rust and body issues.

We chose to buy the car because the body was in nearly perfect condition with very small rust issues, despite the fact that the car spent its entire life in the northern states. However, since we've had the car for three years and it has sat for the majority of this time, some existing rust conditions under the car began to worsen. There are four places on the underbody where patch panels will need to be welded into the floor pans, but the spots are small, and are luckily not near the frame rails. The PO was also rear-ended, so the license plate bezel is cracked, and the unibody is not perfectly straight back there.

About three weeks ago, we bit the bullet and drove to MI to bring the car to our body guy here for an estimate. The drive from MI to the shop wasn't particularly fun, given the fact that I'm driving on Star Specs during the middle of a Chicago winter, but we picked the best weekend possible to make the trip. That 200+ mile trip was the longest drive without any breaks since the swap, and there were absolutely no issues. Woot!

After having all of my options laid out for me at the body shop, I chose the most expensive option. A big part of the decision was that the guy who is restoring the car is the same guy who restored the '78 280Z that was on the cover of the January 2013 issue of Import Tuner. He is going to weld replacement metal into the underbody for all of the rust spots, remove all of the body kit, headlights/taillights, glass (windshield, rear quarters, everything), etc, correct the rear unibody issue, block the car and paint it. It is a relatively large project for the small shop, but I am hoping to have the car back by April 1st, and I am uber excited.

Here are some pics of her as she sits at the body shop now.

I am in the process of buying a replacement for the cracked rear license bezel, a new front grill with the GT4 badge, some replacement interior pieces, crash bolts to adjust the rear camber, and front JDM corners. I also still have all of my Eclipse audio (front and rear 6.5" components, 4 channel amplifier for interior speakers, mono amplifier for 12" subwoofer in a sealed box) to install. I need to remove the triple gauge A pillar pod and all the associated wiring, as well as the PO's alarm. I plan on doing a custom install of my gauges down the road (not in the A pillar), and I want to install a better alarm (never too safe in Chicago!). For right now though, I want to get the wiring back to factory, and clean up the wiring in the engine bay as well (with big 3 upgrade).

So, I have a lot to do, and even if I get my car back from paint by my April 1st deadline, that only leaves me about three weeks to get the rest of my list done before the dragon.

Stay tuned.

The great news about the car is that in removing the paint and taking it down to the metal, the shop is not finding any previous body work or additional layers of paint - the car is in great condition compared to most cars that end up in his shop.

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics and bad lighting, but lots of progress has been made! All of our friends that have worked with this body shop before have said that he is always really busy, and your car may sit there for a while before he gets to it. But they also have said that he never misses a deadline, and he works really fast for the quality of work that is done. I'm still hoping that I'll have the car back by the beginning of April.

The next update won't be until Monday or Tuesday since we're heading to Michigan this weekend. We need to make a junkyard trip, and have had great luck at LKQ in MI. Hopefully the car will be almost completely prepped for paint by the next update. WoOt!

T minus 4 days!!

When I originally set the deadline as 4/1 with the shop, I didn't realize that 3/31 was Easter. I didn't want the guys working on the holiday weekend, so we agreed on this Friday as the final pick up date. When we stopped by on Saturday, they were still blocking and sanding the car, but the body kit had already gotten painted. We also had some last minute running around to pick up a replacement for this broken rear license plate lens:

Looks like this:
http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab343/alltracNyx/Patty/201D0B24-DCAF-46AC-837F-EB4486AF1B55-2106-0000044EB6F027DC_zpsa5de1db6.jpg

But should look like this:
http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab343/alltracNyx/Patty/0425F0FD-F3C6-4340-9895-A6E46C8D5C96-2106-0000044F15DD6DFD_zps4cf77a1a.jpg

It was one of the broken pieces from the PO's accident. The unibody got straightened out last week, and I replaced the license plate bezel that goes between the tail lights, but the lens was becoming a pain to find. I realized that I could do a reverse parts search on toyodiy to see if the lens came on any other car, and low and behold, Toyota used it on '80's Camrys, Corollas, Tercels, Celicas, Cressidas, and Supras. The Supras at every junkyard were picked over (as expected), but no one thought to raid a Cressida. WoOt!

Here are some pics of the repaired rust spots. Passenger rear quarter in front of the wheel:

The car should be painted either today or tomorrow. They are saving the rust repair on the floor pans for last. Probably tomorrow, Chris and I will be stopping at the shop to drop off my replacement tail lights (my passenger tail was cracked) and Celica trim that goes above the front grill. I need to finish up on polishing them so they are ready to go on the car and get a coat or two of clear as well. I still need to pick up the JDM front corners from Eugene (88st165). Lastly, I got some replacement decals for the hatch lid.

SO. EXCITED.

No, no trim delete pieces. I may just tint those pieces to match the JDM corners that I still need to have clear-coated and installed.

I wasn't sure if I was going to post up completed pics before the Dragon, but SOMEONE had to tag me on facebook, so I guess teh kitteh is out of the bag. She still needs some work before she is Dragon bound, but at least she is back in my hands. She will also need some additional buffing/wetsanding/etc to correct some small imperfections, but our body guy just said to bring it back after our road trip to the Dragon so that he can finish up the details, and he will fix any front end mishaps for free (i.e. rock chips from the road trip).

I'm pretty sure you're making this MY dream car since I'll never get one. :hehe:

Like I said, I have a spare center piece that has a crack in it. I may take brake clean to that one and see what it looks like with the gray removed, and maybe even respray it with black in place of the gray on the backside of it. Or, just spray them the same color as the car. I just don't want to mess up the good set.

I think I have two or three extra center ones, but no light trim. The pre-revision ones are cool because the lettering is bigger. There's gotta be pics of mine somewhere, the coupe's is black with red lettering and the hatch's is the opposite.

We're glad you enjoyed it! We did go through another quart of oil on the way home though....
