Well this thing has turned into a bucketload of problems.

Almost every vacuum accessory has been deleted along with T-VIS. It had crappy Bosch +4 plugs in it the harness is hacked to hell. The fuel line has been spliced with rubber hose. etc etc.

My plan: Fix everything that is broken/deleted rebuild the wiring harness basicly put everything back to stock and get it running right and smog legal before I do anything else.

After that it's on to the AC. It's not very cold and I think the PO put WAY too much oil in the system.

Step three will be sealing up the engine and making the engine compartment pretty like the mk1.

THEN I'll start chassis tuning. I plan on front coilovers rear TRD springs bigger sway bars and all the usual stuff, strut bars poly bushes etc. Possibly a T3 short shifter and I don't know what else

I had planned on deleting the power steering but after driving a car with power steering there is no way I'm removing that it is NICE to have.

Any way here are the first few pics. I've already pulled the engine harness (I still need to go thru the chassis harness) and the butchered intake.

Another silvertop? what? :)

Nice pickup! Unfortunately, its difficult to find such a clean example (body wise) up here....

How long are we thinking before she becomes road-worthy?

Another silvertop? what? :)

no this one will stay a 16v until I get money for a black top beams so I can embarrass turbo mr2 and such.

How long are we thinking before she becomes road-worthy?

Well it was road worthy yesterday I drove it 450 miles home.

That sucks it turned out to be a headache.

Fortunately you have a clue of what you are doing.

I'm not worried about it. I have almost everything I need off the 16vs that came out of the silver and the white mr2s.

I just sent a lowball offer to someone on c4ag for the rwd specific stuff I need.

It looks like I'm going to have to fix that fuel line though I think it may go all the way to the back of the car. Any ideas on how to repair a fuel line safely?

Murgatroy
06-09-2010, 10:32 PM
I have never messed with high pressure fuel lines. Only low pressure.

You could cut it, then flare it, run some braided line into the bay. That would be the only way I could think of without replacing it all with hardline. That isn't cheap though as the fittings can get rather expensive.

Why not just use fuel injection hose?

Hipster Lawrence
06-10-2010, 02:07 AM
Why not just use fuel injection hose?

With hose clamps? Eh I don't know it seems like kind of a safety hazard. It's good enough for nissan and subaru though. I may end up doing that.

I could also re flare both ends and put a short piece of line in between. Like repairing a brake hose. I'm going to get with s2s and tweak and see what kind of braided option I can come up with.

But look what I found, A ported head.
This one has a bad spot in the port I'm not sure why they didn't smooth it out there but oh well

I'm not quite sure why someone would port a bigpport head, maybe he was planning on a turbo or something. All the valves are new too. I guess that's a good thing.

Or should I chunk this ported head and use a stock one (I have 2 extra)

Custom ground cam? Even then I don't see it unless the whole shebang was balanced for high rpm.

My guess would be that it was meant to go turbo, or the kid was a complete amateur that had little clue of what he was doing.

They have fuel injection hose specific clamps. Use 2 on each side and you should be alright for a temporary fix.

I have this done on Ellie just off the fuel tank. She's got about 9" of line that I band-aided together and its held for the last 2 years as alltracNyx's daily...

Bugs I'm going to be in PC this summer sometime but if the oil gets there first I'll probably go to NOLA instead. Either way I'll be there in august or september. What do you want for them?

Andy I need lots of stuff.

the metal vacuum lines on the intake for the EGR and such.

EGR tube or the whole EGR system

Fuel line from the fuel filter back towards the tank

A good fuel sending unit

HVAC control in good cond.

Let me know. I probably need other stuff. If you see a good trunk carpet set for a coupe in your junkyard adventures snag it I'm good for it. mine is completely gone.

Also on my mk1 with the headlights down if you pull the lever to flash the brights the lights will pop up and go back down when you release the lever.

Is the ae86 supposed to do that? Cause mine doesn't

Why would someone bypass the starter relay?

Oh and this thing has 225 60 r 14 tires on the back. I look like a redneck riding around in it.

I've made some progress in the last week. Pulled most of the interior to sort out the wiring and clean everything up replace bulbs etc.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/kmlively/AE86/IMG_2703.jpg
Found this relay missing and this relay jumpered not sure why. I'm pretty sure it's an ac relay. The AC amplifier was also unplugged when I got the car so I'm not sure what's going on there.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/kmlively/AE86/IMG_2702.jpg
Also the starter relay was bypassed to a push button but according to the BGB there is no starter relay.
The fuel pump is also wired into the ignition switch not sure why that was done either.

Bugs, If you can't get me the whole front chassis/dash harness at least snag this fuse box

they jumped the ac box to make the compressor run whenever the button is pushed. could freeze your shit up tho so be carful.

Hipster Lawrence
06-20-2010, 07:16 PM
It runs again.

I have figured out why the fuel pump was not running some broken wire on the drivers side fuse box. I have no clue why the PO couldn't figure it out though because the place where he tapped into the fuel pump wiring is like 3 inches from said broken wire.

The AC is not working anymore I must've blown a fuse because it worked before and I can jump the compressor clutch and it will work ok. Weird cause it was working when I first got the car running today, oh well.

The wiring is still a mess, I need to go through I think the ac amplifier is bad and the starter still doesn't work unless you bypass the relay but the relay seems to be working. I'm thinking maybe it has a bad starter and bypassing the relay gets more amps to the solenoid. Who knows.

Pics of HKS filter setup later today.

OK I have been slacking off updating this thread so here goes:

I have been removing the VHT nightshades (lens tint) from the taillights. It's a TON of work.

Started with 600 went to 800 using some goo gone to soften the paint. Then went to 1000 then sprayed clear on then sanded with 1000 again then 1500 then 2000. Finally buffing with meguiars ultimate compound 3 times and putting on about 3 coats of car wax.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/kmlively/AE86/IMG_2721.jpg
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/kmlively/AE86/IMG_2722.jpg

Also made a intake with an HKS SMF filter that used to be on my honda. Used a reducing elbow from siliconeintakes.com.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/kmlively/AE86/IMG_2723.jpg

Put on a cheap ass OBX header. After 5 miles the "ceramic coating" started flaking.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/kmlively/AE86/IMG_2724.jpg

Full exhaust from header back is new. Used a magnaflow muffler and cat, added a flex pipe to the downpipe of the header. Sounds a little ricey at 3-3.5k rpm. There is not really room for a resonator though. I'd go with a chambered flowmaster next time. The sound is livable though and quiet on the highway.

Cool I saw a really short resonator on a VW the other day. Is it a triangle shaped resonator? I'd have a ton of room for a resonator if I didn't have a cat. are you running a cat Andy?

BTW i lowered it on espiller blue springs. Still on blown shocks but it actually rides better on the drop springs. The stance is awesome. I'll try and get some pics of that up tonight.

You should get one. I absolutely love mine It is sooo much fun to drive even with shit brakes, blown shocks, worn out bushings etc. I can only imagine how much fun it'll be with everything good.

I am starting to think it's a more fun car than the mk1. Sure the mk1 is faster and handles better but the ae86 is really easy to drive almost miataish in a way. plus I can pimp the seat back in the rolla.

In other news my poly bushings arrived today. So once I get those in I will be riding on halfway decent suspension. RF shock blown, rear shocks jack down but everything else will be new.

Hipster Lawrence

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/kmlively/AE86/IMG_2749.jpg

I sanded some VHT off of those tail lights that I had on my car at the Dragon. Talk about a pain in the ass. It took me two days of hard work just for one. And I was only doing the turn signals and the reverse lights!

Hipster Lawrence
08-20-2010, 12:44 AM
So I tried wet sanding part of the hood and one of the fenders. The sanding part went ok but my buffer is not strong enough to take all the scratches out. It will take off the haze but it's still dull with light scratches.

I just have a cheap 10" buffer. I guess it's really just made for waxing it sucks cause I don't have 250 bucks for a real buffer and all the accessories right now.

renegadex
08-20-2010, 05:13 AM
How fine was the sand paper you were using? I wet sanded part of the hood on my MK2 and buffed it by hand and I couldnt see any scratches.

Hipster Lawrence
08-20-2010, 11:40 PM
Really? I'm using 2000 grit.

What compound should I be using maybe that's the problem.

renegadex

I went from 2000 to 4000 grit then used some turtle wax buffing compound, it turned out pretty nicely for old shitty paint.

Hipster Lawrence
08-21-2010, 07:43 PM
I've never even seen 4000. Where did you get it? all see on google is micr mesh paper and from what I can tell 2000 grit sandpaper is the same is 6000 grit micro mesh.

renegadex
08-22-2010, 02:32 AM

Hipster Lawrence
08-25-2010, 06:28 PM
Ok so I've worked the hood with 2000. Followed with Meguiars ultimate compound and a wool pad on a rotary buffer. That got the scratches out but left holograms so I used the UC with a foam pad and the same buffer, no more holograms. Then I used some eagle one nano wax I had to see how it will look:
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/kmlively/AE86/IMG_2756.jpg

Pic of orange peel on fender for reference
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/kmlively/AE86/IMG_2754.jpg

I'm not done yet by a long shot. This was really an experiment. I'm going to go to the auto body supply store and pick up some REAL compound and a glaze made for dark cars along with the correct buffer pads. And a decent polishing cloth or 2 so I can quit scratching the car right after it's been buffed.

using a rotary buffer is easy, not nearly as hard as everyone makes it out to be. IF you use the right product ie; A wool pad is super aggressive I doubt I even need it at all.

The Goodridge stainless lines were cake. They install easier than an oe lin cause you don't have to worry about twisting them as the fittings kind of swivel.

OK update no pics tho.

I found 2 14x7 supras for free! along with a set of celica supra p-type seats.

Installing the seats was easy but I had to swap the seats onto the ae86 seat rails. That worked but the supra seats are so much heavier than the mr2 seats I had the spring in the bracket wouldn't lift the seat back. So I had to swap the springs from the supra seat brackets, I was scared to doo this since there was alot of tension on the springs. Believe it or not it was super easy lto just grab them with channelocks.

I had my wife sew up the drivers bolster and it looks awesome. Today she is going to the fabric store for some foam to add to the back of the drivers seat. I'll post pics after I'm done and the seats are clean.

OMG the brakes have been kicking my butt. I rebuilt the front calipers, that went smooth, the rear caliper boots were new so I assumed the PO had rebuilt the calipers. Nope. Got it all back together and the RR caliper is dragging BAD! Rebuilt RR caliper and problem is better but still dragging. So I ended up ordering new calipers, pads, anti rattle springs bolts and slides from the dealer. Only 350 bucks.

I got a new gas tank from rockauto, going to install that with a new fuel pump the lines I got from bugs and an oe fuel filter. I have a feeling that I have a hot rod fuel pump in the SR5 tank the PO stuck me with.

My driveshaft center bearing is bad, just noticed that.

The power steering idler/tensioner pulley is making noise and seems impossible to get for a reasonable price.

I'm still getting shit gas mileage. 25.5 max highway (on a good week) and 20 in the city having fun. It smells rich but there's no cat. My plans for that are getting a fresh oem fuel pump, an MSD coil, delete the clutch fan, and send the injectors off to witchhunter. Beyond that I have no idea why the mpg sucks so bad.

You might be able to press out the bearing on the pulley and put another one in. If you can press the bearing out you probably can get another one from car quest or something.

The one polished wheel. After all that work I'm thinking of painting them silver and black with a polished lip. Any ideas?

Ok started on this today.

I wanted to use both fans but the driver side one won't clear the power steering. One should be more than enough anyway. I'm planning on wiring this up in the normal Toyota way with a failsafe.

When I fix my AC I'm going to go get a small pusher fan to cool the condenser.

Fans or passenger side fan and driver fan shroud. even with the PS deleted the fan on the left side does not clear the AC tensioner, I have some ideas though. I may try an aluminum replacement radiator which will have a thinner core. If that does not work I'll go with a small puller fan inside the stock (aw11) left shroud.

OR just run one fan. but that idea just bothers me for some reason.

PS deleted with aw11 AC bracket and crank pulley. The outer pulley on the ae86 is too far out for the belt to line up. Fortunately the inside pulley is the same or close enough.
