View Full Version : The history and rebirth of "Darkness"

06-01-2010, 05:54 AM
1st off id like to thank Mike ,(dynamic73) for getting me into the world of 3rd gens, if he hadnt beat "shoulda bought a 3rd gen." into my head i probally would have never had one or a toyota truck.

so ive finally got off my ass and started putting darkness back togather. For those of you that dont know darkness is my 85 celica gts or as most of you say "the 3rd gen"

heres a timeline with pics, alot of them

this is the day before i got him, yes him, because this car doesnt have a girly personality at all. Now, i had seen theis car a year before i got it and bugged the lady to sell it. She wouldnt, well till florida summer hit and her kid passed out from the heat one day, so i traded her my 91stx for the 3rd gen. Best trade i ever made.

This is what he looked like after a few weeks and spending 6 hours cleaning and polishing the old paint

the next 3 are some pics i took after they redid the road by my house and made a 2nd road that very few people knew about.

this is the 1st ever cai made for a 3rd gen, i fabbed it myself and put it all togather with just and idea in my head

this wheel was a christmas gift from a friend of mine named andrew hampton, have no idea where he is now

also added door speakers and chrome window cranks

cleaned up lightly modded engine

1st dragon meet, shot suspension as you can see, mediocore tires

since he had been a good boy, i gave him a set of wheels and tires for his birthday

took a trip to the mall to show off

went to the junkyard, saw a mint 85 vert, pulled most of the interior and cleaned it up to use in my car, i needed new carpet and seats anyway. I aslso added sound system wiring, a cap, new speakers and 2 amps.

2nd dragon meet at the church

06-01-2010, 05:58 AM
after the 2nd dragon and tooling around florida and georgia for a little over the year the transmission i had ban-aid fixed started to crap out and the engine was starting to hint at it wanting a rebuild which let to the disassembly of darkness.

busted w58 with only a working 2nd and 4th gears, yes i had enough lowend to easily take off in 2nd, then shift to 4th. how did it die u ask? Well when i got the car it shifted funn and had random drivetrain vibration while moving. I later went to change the fluid and about enough fluid came out to pool in my hand.:11doh: 5 years later, it blows up  (to clairify i had all working gears untill a couple of years back.

heres where he temporarilly rests as i gather parts each week

yes thats right i have a toyota lunch bag

06-01-2010, 05:58 AM
i was just about to start saving for a high performace head and rebuilt bottom end exchange when i ran across this on craigslist for 800.

yes its a 4runner but theres something specail about it.....

.....this, a 30,000 mile 22rte, yup turbo and its all factory

so 400 dollars later i buy the whole truck

this was a bitch to remove with the trans and trans case

06-01-2010, 06:03 AM
Love how the Celi Supras looked on your car.

Cant wait to see her boosted

06-01-2010, 07:22 AM
thanks, yes i cant wait to have may cake and eat it too. basicly im doing a easy bolt in swap where the only thing to havta be fabbed is the downpipe and i may havta get a custom radiator.

so boost in a light car with a 51/49 weight split will be a thrill

06-01-2010, 07:26 AM
is there no wiring involved at all?

06-01-2010, 07:33 AM
umm...... hurry up joe.

06-01-2010, 07:34 AM
is there no wiring involved at all?

im going to swap the 22re harness over to the 22rte though, the truck/4runner harness have a seperate harness for the diagnostic box whereas the celica harness has the diagnostic harness built into it. isnt nessasary though

ecu is plug n play

im supposed to upgrade the fuel pump but i already did, i have a whinebro 255lph pump

E-Z swap ftw

EDIT: oh hush andy, i didnt have any moneys for awhile and now i have extra moneys but i work 7 days a week

joe's gt

This is gonna be awesome.

The only thing I can say is I hope the 4runner was in really bad shape because that would've been a cool resto project.

You should try and make that cool digital dash out of the turbo 4runner work in the GT-S

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for a lot of pics and short, concise descriptions. Really enjoyed the project thread. Keep up the great work!

thank you, its hard trying to do this on a budget but i think the 3rd gen is one of the cheapest generations to modify because the car is simple for what it is

honestly if i had the knowhow id put all anolog custom gauges in it like the older generations had.

plus if i put that thing id id havta hack up the existing harness and slightly modify the factor wiring for the boost scale to work. i do have a toyota truck i can try it with.

oh and yes the body was rotten, if u click the 4runner pics and follow my photobucket album for it you will see how badly it was rusted. yes i felt bad for it too.

06-06-2010, 09:35 AM

the truck engine i have on a stand is going to a buddy of mine so he can put it back togather cheap. and the turbo engine is going on the stand so i can freshen it up and so i can swap oil pans

only things im getting for sure next are tires and a ss clutch hose

06-15-2010, 06:02 AM
aawwwwww celicas look so good in black...

07-08-2010, 07:50 AM
so hopefully im aquiring a t3/t4 manifold , mandrel bent downpipe to goes all the way to the cat, autometer cobalt a/f guage and boost guage for 145 shipped

im getting parts from here http://www.celica-gts.com/forums/index.php?topic=20825.0

also i bought a 135k 22re from a 85 vert for my truck but the harness is in better shape than my orginal (all my connectors are brittle after 312k miles and 25 years) and and that engine will go in my truck.

07-11-2010, 02:55 AM
You got spare wheels? 14x7 Celica supras? Want to sell 2?

07-11-2010, 04:12 AM
well i needed an extra set with tires so i was going to use the ones on the parts car for now.

but if u make me a decent offer ill sell u a set or if i can find one extra one ill sell u a pair

07-22-2010, 06:54 AM
came home this evening to a big box

this is what was inside

aftermarket log type t3/t4 turbo manifold that places the turbo upright.

downpipe thats 2.25 inch (im going to get a 2.5 made up later on from this)

autometer cobalt a/f guage

oil feed hose for the t3/t4

knock off hks ssqv w/pipe

im going to try and get some 370cc injectors from the same guy here shortly

07-22-2010, 06:12 PM
Nice. So, whats the current list of needs for darkness?

07-22-2010, 10:17 PM
thanks for askin, i do need to make an updated list so ones i have are not a jumbled up.

2 tires, though i may cheap out and get a set of nexens and have 2 extra tires
vac hoses
cooling hoses
rear diff seals
fog bulbs
rear brake hoses
ss brake line (its only a few dollars over a regular one)
horn (ill probally just go to the junkyard and get some off a fullsize gm)
boost guage
2 pods

thats all i need in terms of parts atm

soon here in the next few weeks ill put the engine and trans togather on the ground and put it in the car as 1 unit.

for now im going to run the stock turbo setup unless i find a 50 trim garret t3/t4 turbo for a good price. though if i do that im also going to have to track down some higher flowing injectors between 370cc-440cc. Also ill have to get a intercooler set up as well which im planning anyway but i want the beast up and running before i mess with any of that.

The extra set of wheels i got ill probally paint them like this and i may use them for a short duration cause the tread is decent

07-23-2010, 06:37 AM
lol didnt read and thought for a sec that you bought that ae86, i was all like YAH.....awwww.

07-23-2010, 11:07 AM
id consider one to replace the 6th gen, problem is all the ones here are beat to shit and/or are 3-5 grand

note to self 240sx sr20 aluminum radiator fits with light modification, so does a mazda 929 radiator

07-23-2010, 10:57 PM
I did the same thing Andy and thought "Damn, Joe didn't say anything about picking one of those up!"

07-24-2010, 05:46 AM
i may be picking up a 93 camry to replace the 6th gen, i wouldnt mind having a 86 but id want a hatch. i want a car with more room anyway plus some guy offered 1800 for the 6th gen, i told em 2200 including all extra parts.

gonna go see if i can find a metal 929 radiator this weekend. If not ill hold off for a aluminum 240sx sr20 radiator. they are only 119 shipped new w/cap.

08-05-2010, 08:30 AM
keeping the 6th gen 4 now

so 163.50 later i got these and they were shipped to my door in less than 48 hours and the shops in town said these wernt listed or if they did find them they were on back order. If you want something done right, do it yaself.

so now i technically have a set of tires but they are miss matched 2 are nexen n3000 (shown here), 1 is a bridgestone potenza, 1 is a pirelli. I see another bridgestone on ebay, if the seller accepts my offer ill get it and have the pirelli as a spare.

hopefully by this weekend ill have the flywheel from the gts sent off to get turned. Ive been trying to hold out for a used lightweight one but no dice.

08-28-2010, 04:58 AM
slight update

darkness now has a set of shoes, split set but a set non the less

got the other bridgestone potenza from the guy on ebay, finally got him to buldge on the price after i sent him a half page long email.

so now he's got all 4 new tires 2 bridgestones and 2 nexens, and with them being 245/45/16's damn car should grip the road damn well.

funny part is the balancer caught fire while balancing the tire/wheel. Luckily nothing was damaged

i also aquired a working autometer boost guage for 15 dollars but i may sell it to get a autometer cobalt boost guage to match my autometer cobalt a/f guage

the ct20 thats on the rte checks out good, soon ill pull the pan and check things there and if all is well ill assemble the engine and trans on the ground and go from there.

up next to buy in random order:

send injectors off to be cleaned
fog light bulbs
fmic and "stuff", i may just use a intercooler from a mk3 supra though and get the ends modified since my friend has an extra one.
guage pod
egt guage
89-94 240sx 3 row aluminum radiator or skyline aluminum 3 row rad
mk2 supra rear bumper cover
82 supra afm
debatting getting another muffler, but its the same type i have now just a 3 inch inlet instead of the 2 1/4 i have now.

09-01-2010, 08:16 AM
This looks so nice man. Finished product will be awesome for sure.

09-01-2010, 05:07 PM
Is your current exhaust 3"?

09-02-2010, 11:10 AM
current exaust is removed, the exaust i have in storage that came off the parts car is 2.5, the muffler i was looking at was only available in 2 inch, 2.25 inch, or 3.

the current muffler i could get the end enlarged but one of the tips is bent slightly so i was debating just getting another ebay DTM like i have now cept without the burnt tips

thanks doowstados for the complements.

got the old p/s rack out, 130k rack with new bushings is to be installed in the next few days

i may do the brakes but im debating rebuilding the rear calipers, or replacing them, and buying new rotors

09-26-2010, 01:48 AM
so the 130k rack seemed to be leaking so after awhile i found the rack i got from the parts car and it appears that it was a reman, so im going to fit it with new inner tie rods and reuse the outters.

the new tie rod will be here monday

after this im going to get the engine and trans togather so i can try and put it in as 1 unit

10-08-2010, 08:56 AM
frankenstein rack is bolted in, picked up the energy suspension dust boots for the tie rods and will put those on over the weekend.

hellova good deal i got on ebay on some brembos

so ill be taking the rear brake assembly apart so it can be ready for the new rotors, the old ones i cut to min spec several years ago so im sure these will be alot better.

as for the front, they wernt used that much and i have a extra set in storage but id rather find a set of slotted 86-88 cressida rotors and calipers to go up front

10-27-2010, 02:06 AM
mini update

did all the brakes, rack is bolted all the way in, tie rods connected, wheels bolted on. Damn 245/45/16s look good on my gts. Now all thats left really suspensionwise is to order new lug nuts, eyeball alighn the front so it will make it to firestone for lifetime alighnment and lop off a coil per side on the front springs.

engine work will be comming VERY soon, only thing that is holding me up is funds cause i may havta drop 200 coin on an apartment here in the next few days, after i get moneys sorted out im sending my stock flywheel off to get lighted and blanced and order my 240sx aluminum rad

11-11-2010, 06:15 AM
so far everything is in motion to send my flywheel here http://www.racetep.com/flywheel.html and after that im going to try and get spoonmans ic and a 57 trim turbonetics supra turbo w/a t3/t4 flange from a local guy for cheap, then send it off when i get my taxes back for a rebuild

meanwhile im going to swap harnesses, oil pans, and replace the waterpump and all seals this week

11-13-2010, 07:51 AM
very nice buildup. :) keep up the great work!

i've always loved the way the 3rd gen celica gts' looked... and in black, it looks EVEN better. :)

11-21-2010, 03:17 AM
thanks, really appreciate that.

everythings on a slight hold again because me and TNT have been looking at houses to rent. Im trying to move by the end of this year or sooner.

12-06-2010, 06:37 AM
house w/garage aquired

now to get my security deposit back from this other place.

so next in sumwhat order

lightened flywheel
sr20 radiator
fix the stock cracked manifold
mix and match parts on the rte to work with a celica

assemble engine and trans

then misc stuff like fluids, belts, ect

12-21-2010, 08:28 AM
You've been working on this for like what... six -seven months now? MOAR PICTURES.

12-27-2010, 07:51 AM
well yeah, stuff keeps getting in the way like me working with 1 day off per month for the last year, the beater needing work, and i need a new cam, my phone sucks.

as i was moving i think i have 30 or so boxes of spare 3rd gen/toyota truck parts, and theres still more.

i start a new job on the 17th of jan with better pay and hours so that should help speed things up.

01-02-2011, 10:46 PM
How did I miss the updates on this the past few months? Are you running XXR 002s on the third gen? What size are they 16x8? I was going to pick up a set of 501s and run 245/45/R16s so I'm dying to know how they look. Forgive me if I asked a question that's already answered here but I don't think I seen anything.

01-02-2011, 11:52 PM

My Project sat for 2 years before getting fixed.

Shit happens

yeah im running 002's with 245/45/16s and a 1 inch drop all around now (i had to lop off a coil in the front cause ccs sent me the wrong springs) though it drove like a dream

the car is at my folks house for now while i finish up the engine for my mini truck at the new house, when i get back over there and get all the boxes off the car ill snap a pic 4 ya

btw the rear sits perfect, the front should after i get the engine in

02-19-2011, 08:37 AM
3 row megan radiator 130 shipped, dont mind if i do

mmm purdy

flywheel is next unless i find a intercooler cheap

09-09-2011, 05:36 AM
mini update

no real labor progress, over time ive aquired

interior bits
82 supra afm, if the car is still there i may try to get the rear end cause i forgot that the 82 celica supra was the only one that has a stock 3.73 rear lsd unit in the 5 speed

and today after some horse trading a barely used genuine garret t3 with a 3 bolt rear section and internal wastegate which is what ive been looking for for over a year. its a lil smaller than what i wanted but apperently the rte guys love this lil thing cause it matches the powerband and rev nature of the rte. Quick spool and fulll spool between 2500-3000rpm, runs 7-14psi, good for 250whp but im aiming at 180-200 on the stock ecu, and ill probally have it set no higher than 10psi

i still need to send that flywheel off, buy an intercooler, (i know what size i want), some piping, waterpump,(i put the oem pump i bought for this on my truck), and 370cc injectors

this will most likely end up my winter project as im almost done with the truck and the stx may not be here much longer so the 240 would take its place and all i need for it now is a waterpump, front and rear main, vavle cover gasket set, and a clutch kit
