View Full Version : flywheel question

very simple question. hopefully, someone knows the answer...

i am looking for a new flywheel for my 1st gen 3sge.

from my research, the 3sfe & 5sfe use the exact same flywheel.

is this true? and if i do get a 3sfe/5sfe flywheel, will my 3sge clutch bolt up to it without any fitment issues?

If you get a 5sfe flywheel, you'll need to use a 3sge clutch disc, and 5sfe pressure plate.

IIRC.. the 3sfe was a 6bolt flywheel, while the 3sge is 8 (6 bolt for early years). Not sure about the 5sfe bolt pattern though.

The 1st gen 3sge, 3sgte share the same flywheel, but not with the 2nd gen 3sgte.

ok, then i'm in a real pinch.

i have NO flywheel at the moment. i do have the 8 bolt style 3sge crank.

going to the info on the Exedy site, i am comparing the 89 AllTrac Celica with the 87 Celica GTS. the clutch kits are noticeably different.

ST162 1986-89 Celica GTS:
Disc Outer Diameter 225mm(8-7/8in)
Spline Teeth / Major Diameter 20T / 1-1/8in

ST165 1988-99 Celica AllTrac
Disc Outer Diameter 236mm(9-1/4in)
Spline Teeth / Major Diameter 21T / 1-3/16in

SW20 1990-95 Mr2 (Non-Turbo)
Disc Outer Diameter 225mm(8-7/8in)
Spline Teeth / Major Diameter 20T / 1-1/8in

so, by those specs, the 5SFE flywheel 'should' work for me.

the long and short of it, i'm tried of ordering the flywheel from whatever place, it arriving, being wrong, sending it back, waiting for a refund, etc.

unfortunately, Exedy does not give the number of starter teeth on the exterior of the flywheel, the exterior diameter or the number of holes for the crank bolts. which, if those were given, would probably solve my problem in a matter of moments.

yep some very early ge cranks were 6 bolt. Also just to be a PIA late model 3sfe's used an 8 bolt crank 91 onwardsi think??? some also use different types of F/W bolts
try going through toyot may be your only option or atleast try and get the part number and specs out of them?

i sent an email to Exedy, just to verify my research.

the Exedy clutch kits 16072 (3sge) and 16073 (5sfe) use the exact same pressure plate, therefore they WILL bolt onto the same flywheel.

the exact wording being:
"Yes the 16072 and the 16073 both use the TYC603 pressure plate."

so, this solves my issue. i need to get an 8 bolt 5sfe flywheel. done!

the 86 and 87 flywheels are smaller had this issue with my buddy's gts, the trans is different too so there it be

Late 89, actually. Airc the split is 08/89, but I could have the month wrong. This is production date, not model year. So basically the model year 90-92 3S-FE Camry had the 8 bolt.

the transmission i'm using is from a 94 Mr2 non-turbo (s54), because this whole setup is going into my AW11.

so, i basically had to get a stock 5sfe flywheel. next time, i'll save up and get a Fidanza lightweight flywheel. :)

just FYI - the flywheel i installed is for a 5sfe, and it mated up perfectly to my 3sge clutch! the s54 transmission fit over it without any issues as well.

so, i believe its safe to say that the 3sge and 5sfe use the same flywheel and clutch. :)
