Ok. So I'm looking at rebuilding, this thing currently has the stock 20R, an exploded muffler, a 2 stage 2 barrell carburetor in which stage 2 doesn't work, stock 5 speed tranny, rusty gas tank and is not rolling due to a crushed fuel line, and severely:feedback bent hood hinges. (also boat paint (!?!) that doesn't appear to have primer underneath)
I'm open to suggestions for engine options, paint options/schemes, and a good place to buy better rims.
The plan is for this thing to be a good semi-daily driver and faster is better.

2rz! They sell bolt-on turbo kits for those motors too. If you don't want to ever go turbo, you can go 3rz. Those old Celicas are light, so it'll feel pretty peppy. There's also the old 22rte standby as well...

1. Remove fuel tank and have treated
2. Rebuild carburetors
3. Replace fuel lines
4. plugs/wires/cap/rotor(or points)
5. Remove and have cleaned and pressure tested the Radiator
(It likely has scale build up from sitting, so it would be to your benefit to have it inspected at least)
6. Oil/Transmission/Differential/Coolant fluid change.
(You will likely want a new valve cover and oil pan gasket at the same time)
7. New belts.

^^The above should g4et you reliably running.
Worry about the superficial stuff later.

much appreciated, everything else was planned, but the radiator completely slipped my mind, coulda been bad. Also learned something in the process of dropping the tank: the older gas gets, the worse it tastes. lol.

Oh my GOD yes!!!
I had a resto job for a customers '50 Business Coupe.
I puked. Man, it was like varnish.

I mainly mentioned the things I did so you can be more able to budget for it.
Better to plan for an eventuality or two than run out of steam partway. ;)

Yeah, about budgeting, if I'm not mistaken I remember reading somewhere that the celica was kinda designed as the poor man's sports car. The car was basically custom built for guys like me.

i like the color. honestly, a 22r/20r hybrid would bw cool. you get the bottom end strength of the 22r matched with the better flow characteristics of the 20r head. you could bore the cylinders and fit some 92mm pistons for 11:1cr if you wanted too. do some head work while you're at it.

you could also just run a stock hybrid.

yeah that's what my dad recommended, he's a great mechanic but he mostly deals with domestics, so I was curious what celica people thought would be best.

I drool over that thing.
I lust after a 1st gen because of that car.

Isn't Andy running a hybrid setup in his gen1?
