View Full Version : Race City opens May 14th!

04-30-2010, 07:55 PM
I am going next Friday night...who's with me? Chris, Ryan? anyone else?

I am still undecided what I will take but more leaning on the MR-2. I want to see my times in both cars before any mods. I've never raced a RHD at the track before...should be exciting.

04-30-2010, 09:28 PM
I thought tonight was the 1st night? Probably not so much b/c of the weather.

I'll have to check it out to see if I can make it. Have to hook up my batt kill switch if I'm going to run too. Would be nice to get a # back since I haven't run since going standalone...and that was years ago haha.

Anyone else? Ryan? Sean? Dave? Berg? Steve (lol)? If I go I'll have to ping the other guys in town to see if they'd be game to come by too.

04-30-2010, 09:51 PM
Do eet! more the merrier.

Yeah it was suppose to be tonight, but because of the weather they changed it to next Friday.

05-03-2010, 01:36 AM
I may come out, although I'll obviously be a spectator. :hehe: Hey, someone's got to handle the photo and video taking! I have a hockey game that night, albeit at 10:30pm, so we'll see.

If we could convince Sean, Dave, and Berg to come out, we can have ourselves a little CelicaTech mini-meet.

05-04-2010, 06:51 PM
weather prediction for Friday looks good! I was a little worried earlier in the week, it showed snow for Friday :(

Hey, someone's got to handle the photo and video taking!

You can record me missing 3rd! LOL

Or you can steal Chris' ST205 since he wont be taking it :)

05-05-2010, 08:35 PM
If this crappy weather doesnt improve, I'm going to have to change my mind and bring the GT4 instead. I wonder if they would let us race on snow with 4wd cars? ;)

I doubt it will be a 'go' for Friday night "Secret Street" event as the forcast now shows snow and rain for Friday. I'm still hopeful though.

05-05-2010, 08:46 PM
Arg, I wish for once they could get the forecast right. Fingers crossed.

05-05-2010, 09:16 PM
mine too :)

05-06-2010, 12:12 AM
I always spell it forcast because it was a username for a fellow OP back on efnet in #W4F_Warez use (this was back when IRC was cool) about 10 or more years ago

Actually he spelled it Forcas7 :) I was and still am Sodap0p ;)

Ive been to race city many times in the past, but it was for solo2. I've never taken anything to the drag track. Everytime I tried in the past it got rained out. Looks like my luck again :(

05-06-2010, 05:00 PM
Moved to Canada forum as this is more a meet/event thread, not really a drag racing discussion.

05-06-2010, 08:52 PM
cool, thanks for moving it

05-06-2010, 09:17 PM
I'll keep my eye on the canada forum and this thread - while I usually to go autox events and lapping days with the Supra, I am curious how much better my times will be with the stiffer rear springs and resulting reduction in squat camber change and increased traction. Ran low 13s last year with trap speeds around the 125 mph mark - definetly a case of traction issues considering I would spin all the way thru first and second gear (up to about 60 mph) and my 60 foot times were around 2.5 sec.

I'll also be tuning on the 700cc/min injectors soon, so I can run more boost in 3rd and above. Should hit 450 wheel easily.

Tara might be game to take the 205 - see what it runs bone stock.

05-06-2010, 09:39 PM
Jeez, 125 MPH should place you deep in the 11's! Would be cool to see you guys out there. Weather is still up in the air a bit, but the Race City website still saying tomorrow opening.

For me, low 13's would be great...maybe even a high 12? By end of year with any luck though, will be adding cams, new IC, custom intake manifold... :)

05-06-2010, 09:55 PM
On Friday nights the $25 fee includes drag track and auto X. Which I think is a killer price for what you get. Just need to sport a Helmet (SNELL 95 or higher) they rent them for $5 though. I cant wait, with more people coming this should be lots of fun!

05-06-2010, 11:42 PM
I'm having major 2 separation anxiety. Dont get my wrong I love my GT4, but I love ripping up the streets in the 2!

05-07-2010, 08:23 AM
Ahhhh! I wonder if my Celica would survive a trip down there.

Drag racing my stock beat up 165 would be a hoot, lol. Too bad my third gear is pretty much shot when driving hard.

05-07-2010, 01:43 PM
"H Steve,
We are hoping to get the event in tomorrow but it does not look good right now. We still have snow on the ground and the forecast for tomorrow is not great.

Race City "

05-07-2010, 04:15 PM
Yeah unlike you AWD guys I need it to be decently warm to get good launches. Hoping to be in the mid to low 12s with the power I'm making now, and the better traction. Castrol in Edmonton and especially Race City have pretty slick drag tracks, and independent rear set up for autox doesn't help.

Truly, the saying goes Supra: want to race from a roll?

05-07-2010, 04:20 PM
hmm, weather looks not too bad right now...

05-07-2010, 04:30 PM
I'm still going, I am hopeful they will open it.

05-07-2010, 04:41 PM
What time will you be there? I've still got to install my batter kill switch, double check some fluids, tire pressure, etc. after work.

05-07-2010, 05:16 PM
My mom and dad want to do dinner tonight, probably just after 6:30.

05-07-2010, 07:43 PM
What time/speed do you need a bat kill? I was under the impression that all I would need would be a cage after breaking 11.49, since my driveshaft is single piece and passes through the rear crossmember, so it can't fall down and damage the tarmac if one of the U joints breaks.

05-07-2010, 07:46 PM
Bat kill if the battery is relocated to the hatch. Not time dependant. I'm not sure what the rules are on cages...I don't think I'll need to worry about that for a while. :P

Cold Weather has Cancelled May 7
Friday, 07 May 2010

Well, the day is still here but Secret Street will not start today. It looks like the season will get under way on May 14. We still have snow in places and standing water with the accompanying mud in the pits. The timing system has been checked and is working well right now. We just need some better weather. See you next Friday.

05-07-2010, 09:29 PM
I called, Secret Street is cancelled for May 7 :(

LOL, beat me to it :)

05-07-2010, 09:32 PM
Still going for drinks, or just re-try for next week?

05-07-2010, 10:21 PM
Well, the consolation is that the weather looks great for next week...so long as the weather people know what they're talking about.

Which they don't, but we can hope!

05-07-2010, 11:26 PM
I have to pickup the engine lift sometime after dinner(Applebee's leaving in 10). I should be free after that (whenever that will be)

05-07-2010, 11:39 PM
I'll definitely be coming out one of these nights. Now, forget RHD - I've never driven any car at the drag strip. So it'll be entertaining. I look forward to it!

I just need to wait for my tires to come in and my wheels to be repaired so I can go on summers, instead of beating on the poor winters.

05-08-2010, 02:53 AM
Awesome! Cant wait to meet you in person. We are meeting for drinks at 8, but since its 7:52, Im kinda late. I figured getting the hoist for Chris and Ryan was more important and my buddy with the lift isnt home :(

Rock----me stuck------hard place

05-10-2010, 04:43 PM
Hey guys, sorry I missed the drinks. I was out of town and didn't get back in until late Friday night. My parents are in town visiting this week, so probably won't make it out this week. Will definitely try to make it out soon.

05-10-2010, 07:47 PM

Tara, I owe you a few answers on your 205. :11doh:

Maybe we will chat at the track this Friday? I think we should all try again as the weather looks good. Should be a busy night.

05-10-2010, 08:42 PM
I'll be there.

05-10-2010, 08:58 PM
We ended up doing quite a bit of maintenance on her 205, from replacing the whole sunroof glass seal and repairing the power antenna, to replacing some CV boots and both front axle seals. I also regreased alot of the ball joints in the front end which eliminated all the squeaky noises. As well I had to fix up the plastic undertrays a bit as they were slightly ratched, and replaced some clips and fasteners in the interior during the removal of wiring left over from some crazy sound system that was in the car in Japan. Some other minor shit like a K&N filterbox insert to fix the dirty air filter, gluing the bypass valve back together and repairing the rad cap neck on the intercooler was done too. Just waiting on a foglight to replace the left hand side one which has a crack in it. We also need to replace the brake and clutch fluids as they are a little dark.

We decided to install an aftermarket headunit integrated with the amp for the two 8" 'subs' in the doors as part of the 10 speaker package, and a switch to raise and lower the antenna at will. Also a keyless entry system with ignition interlock.

Really her only beef with the car at this point is the fact it kind of smells like axe bodyspray or some shit inside - getting better with multiple febreeze treatments though. Seems to boost well (~10 in first and ~14.5 after that) and is nice and quick.

If we go this friday it will just be the Supra - will be a few weeks before her 205 has the summer tires on and its good to go for the track.

05-10-2010, 09:38 PM
Tara, I owe you a few answers on your 205. :11doh:

Are you going to race, Sean? If so, which car?

Should be a fun night for sure with the good weather and all.

05-11-2010, 12:35 AM
Yeah, I might come out on Friday, but I sure won't be getting on the track with my winter tires. My tires are on their way here, but it'll be a little while yet. The summer wheels came with some crappy 215s stretched on to 8" rims. Not good for traction.

In addition to what Ryan had to say about what we've done with the car: It smells like boy. Specifically, douchebaggy boy, even though the guy I bought it from was very nice. It's getting better, but it still smells like icky Axe body spray. Like, he must have sprayed it on the upholstery. At close range, so it soaked into the foam.

Not that I'm complaining or anything.

05-11-2010, 02:45 AM
Specifically, douchebaggy boy, even though the guy I bought it from was very nice.
Was there any Ed Hardy apparel inside when you bought it? That would be the dead giveaway. :D

05-11-2010, 02:51 AM
Hmm ... you guys make the car out to be a real POS. :toung:

Anyways, I'm glad it is in good hands.

Ryan, I'll be spectating. I haven't had any time to prepare a car for the track. My new 205 is just in and needs prerequisite maintenance. My RC is waiting on it's engine and my FD needs brakes. So yeah, just spectating.

05-11-2010, 03:15 AM
Not a POS - I'm just quite fastidious as far as vehicle maintenance, and a perfectionist (if you couldn't tell last summer). Overall it's a great car - I just didn't like the oil leaks on the garage floor, and it needed a bit of preventative maintenance.

05-11-2010, 03:25 AM
Ha ha, the car is in excellent shape - any issues simply stem from the fact that it is a 1994 model with ~90 000 kms on the chassis. Most of the maintenance that usually needs to be done around this mileage has already been done. We're just taking a very good car to the next level. The damn thing may as well only be a couple of years old. After all this all that will remain on the list is to replace the rubber around the large vent in the hood, and to respray the car in a few years. Those, and a 3" exhaust, open element air filter, and coilovers... but those aren't exactly routine maintenance, nor will they happen any time soon.

I didn't find any Ed Hardy apparel inside... but I did find a very small brochure in Japanese for the Disney Land that they have there! It was in the spare tire well.

The car doesn't smell that bad... it just smells (now faintly) of boy. And I am not a boy. I don't want it to smell like flowers either, but Axe just isn't my scent.

Edit: Ryan beat me to it. But you get the point.

05-12-2010, 09:42 PM
Friday May 14th is the 'new' opening of the season, I took the day off to prepare, I will be there in the MR2. I hope to see everyone there! :)

05-12-2010, 09:51 PM
Should be a beautiful night for racing. I'll be there, with my camera and HD camcorder. I assume Sean will be bringing his camera too, so the spectators will definitely be taking care of the multimedia on Friday. :)

05-12-2010, 11:23 PM
Gee, that sounds like what I was planning on doing... it's time to dust off my SLR.

05-12-2010, 11:29 PM
I would have liked to see what the MR2 would have done with a stock boost of 13psi, but I'm enjoying 16psi far too much to set it back :)

05-12-2010, 11:57 PM
Gee, that sounds like what I was planning on doing... it's time to dust off my SLR.

Ah, beautiful. We'll have no shortage of shots then!

05-14-2010, 08:40 AM
I had some oil come out of the BOV on my way home today. Enough that I saw smoke come out of the engine compartment when it spat on something hot. I've had a blown oil seal on a turbo before and this isnt i, Im just a little worried.

I'm down a 1/2 liter of oil since the oil change which was when I bought it about a month ago. I did notice some residue inside the hotpipes when I took them off to switch from the stock gen3 BPV to a HKS BOV.

05-14-2010, 03:48 PM
First, check your PCV catch can. This should be a black tank attached to a line from the valve cover, then going into your intake. Make sure it's not full. Clean/empty it out if you can. Also make sure those hoses are in good shape.

The oil is likely coming from there, as blowby is fed through the intake to be burned off. Trouble is it coats the IC piping and IC with oil.

So if it's not your turbo, then it would be that. Only two things can get oil there.

Do a compression test if you can. That will tell you generally if there are major engine issues to worry about. If that checks out too you could have a leak down test done. If that is also good, then it would have to be your turbo.

05-14-2010, 05:21 PM
I pulled the catch can out and it is clean, no oil in it, just a slight amount of residue.

05-14-2010, 05:31 PM
Hmm...less blowby than expected might point to the turbo seals. Run a compression check if you can just in case, but if it is the turbo that's better than cracked ring lands.

Take out your pipes and clean the insides good. Also the intercooler if you can, see if the problem comes back...

05-14-2010, 05:38 PM
yeah, I think im going to have to do that, I think its the turbo seal, but I dont think its very bad, I think it will be fine for tonight, I guess I have to start looking for an upgrade, then rebuild the CT20b for the GT4. Im going to take her for a rip to the car wash and back.

Im hoping it is a one time thing and only because I drove it pretty hard on Thursday morning.

05-14-2010, 07:17 PM
I let her rip around town and it didnt happen again, but I wasnt torturing it like I did on Thursday

what time we meeting up tonight? 6:30, 7ish?

05-14-2010, 08:38 PM
Yep I'm planning 6:30-7. Gotta rig up my battery kill switch (again), maybe clean the car a bit, then grab some gas and should be good to go.

05-14-2010, 09:55 PM
cool, Im leaving around 5, going to look at helmets on 32ave NE, then I'll head over.

05-14-2010, 10:00 PM
You can also rent helmets for $5. Although they are nasty of course. But I might end up with one tonight...:eek4:

05-14-2010, 10:03 PM
Eeew. That's the other reason I won't be racing for a little while.... I need a helmet unsullied by sweaty boy head.

Meeting at Race City 'round 6:30 - 7pm? Is there a pre-arranged spot, or shall I just look for the cluster of Toyotas?

05-14-2010, 10:07 PM
Yep if not, can call me at 403-826-6732 if you cant find people. I'll be in my white st165.

05-14-2010, 10:08 PM
Fabulous, thanks Chris.

05-15-2010, 08:03 AM
Well, that was a fun evening. Thanks for coming out everyone! I'll share some of my favorite pictures from the night:

Sorry Steve! I could only choose one car and decided to follow Chris with the next two!

And my favorite from the night...too bad it didn't contain a Celica or Supra!

05-15-2010, 04:13 PM
Those were awesome photo's !!! Thanks for taking them bro! :)

That was a great time! I cant wait to do it again

05-15-2010, 05:32 PM
Awesome shots!

Had a great time guys! Good to see everyone again.

05-17-2010, 03:50 PM
I want to see the pictures Tara took... Also, the video Ryan took. Hook it up guys! :)

05-17-2010, 03:54 PM

05-17-2010, 04:36 PM
wooot! that was our first run and the christmas tree surprised us both as you can see from our launches...I still love watching it, I had lots of fun!

05-18-2010, 01:34 AM
I'm having some image hosting issues... photobucket is shitting itself.

So, I'm going to try something different. It'll just take a little while.

05-18-2010, 03:10 AM
haha! I love the new signature Chris :)

05-18-2010, 03:11 AM
Stupid thing decided to work. So, here goes!

I thought this shot was kinda neat...

Ryan couldn't hook up through most of 1st and 2nd, but still ran a 13.5. He should stop complaining. :P

Yeah, these all look the same... I was trying to get the perfect blur. Also, Vipers are pretty cool lookin'.

05-18-2010, 03:13 AM
awesome shots Tara! thanks for taking them

05-18-2010, 03:14 AM
Also, a family photo for shits and giggles (my car was dirty... it had been gross out.)

05-18-2010, 03:15 AM
Ryan's Supra is awesome, I loved watching him run against vettes and mustangs :)

05-18-2010, 03:15 AM
I had fun with my camera. Good times.

Also, RyanD, I LOVE your shots!

05-19-2010, 04:37 PM
So...not this Friday because of the long weekend, but how about the weekend after? Anyone interested in another meet down at Race City? say...June 4th?

05-19-2010, 09:45 PM
Great photos Tara!

So...not this Friday because of the long weekend, but how about the weekend after? Anyone interested in another meet down at Race City? say...June 4th?

I'd be down, but of course I'd only be there for moral support again.

05-19-2010, 09:53 PM
I convocate that day. Apparently it means that I actually have a degree, or something. My mom gets to take photos of me wearing a robe and a funny hat.

I'll be out next time though!

05-20-2010, 05:16 AM
Haha. Funny hat.

05-20-2010, 07:53 AM
That tickled my funny bone, for some reason.

05-25-2010, 05:06 PM
I'm out of town this weekend...

05-25-2010, 10:09 PM
I dont think I'll make it this weekend either, maybe the next one ( June 5th).

05-26-2010, 11:11 PM
Steve, I just saw you headed north on 14th St in the MR2. At least, I figure it was you. Not many of those around.

That is all.

05-27-2010, 01:05 AM
yeah, thats my route of travel between 3:30 and 4:00

06-25-2010, 06:55 PM
Anyone for Secret Street tonight?

06-25-2010, 07:07 PM
No time tonight. :( NHL Draft night, plus I'm headed to Edmonton tomorrow for a day trip and probably should 'get ready'.

Also my cars aren't in the position to run ATM. 165 is half apart, 205 still waiting delivery of a new tire.

06-25-2010, 07:12 PM
Maybe next weekend? I've got Thursday and Friday off next week for the Canada day weekend.

06-25-2010, 07:30 PM
Working in Ft. Sask today but next week sounds good for me.

Also my cars aren't in the position to run ATM. 165 is half apart, 205 still waiting delivery of a new tire.

Where did you find your tire?

06-28-2010, 09:50 PM
East Coast Tires, found them by searching ebay. They didn't have it listed but I sent an email and they had them, shipped out next day. :)

06-29-2010, 12:11 AM
Hmmm... I wish I didn't work until ten pm on Friday.

Incidentally, I got my summers at 1010tires.com... they had a good price for my Falken 452s, and shipped in a reasonable amount of time.

07-02-2010, 03:05 AM
Anyone for Friday night Secret Street?

I will probably head down around 6:30.

07-03-2010, 01:32 AM
ok well its 6:30, my wife had other plans for me, Im going to try for 7:30 :)

07-03-2010, 01:41 AM
Perhaps next week for me! We shall see.

07-03-2010, 01:52 AM
Then, Ill save bringing the GT4 to the track till then.

Ima take the MR2 tonight, just waiting to hear from a few people. I dont want to go alone :)

07-09-2010, 05:29 PM
Any interest for tonight? I may just work on the boat tonight if noone is interested. Because the Stampede is in town, I doubt there will be lots of cars down there. More runs for us?

07-09-2010, 06:53 PM
We're still pretty busy with the new house etc. Plus I think Tara is having some friends over so I will go out and have some beers with the guys.

07-09-2010, 07:17 PM
do you have some room at the new place for me to park some stuff? my place is full, neighbors getting pissed :)

The RC was suppose to be picked up on Tuesday, but the dude from Cali had some delay's, he is supposedly on the road now, I hope we can close the deal this Sunday. I really need some more parking spots...hehe

07-09-2010, 09:34 PM
you could put one of the non bashed-up cars in the alley behind our place no problem. Until I get the shop build, we need the street parking out front.

07-09-2010, 10:04 PM
I was only kidding, but I appreciate the offer...thanks Ryan :)

07-14-2010, 03:23 PM
Hey Tara and Ryan, you guys should give Chris and I your phone numbers so we can get together on short notice. We were thinking of another Celica meet at Race City Friday depending on attendee's.

07-14-2010, 03:51 PM
Heh. We'll definitely pm you guys our numbers - but we're out for this friday. We're driving to Vancouver for the PACNW Supra Nationals! We'll be away for the week after as well... so, how's about the 30th? :P

07-14-2010, 03:52 PM
I think I should be able to make it.

07-16-2010, 05:14 PM
I'm still planning to go... thinkin of taking the 205.
