Yeah, I really like this style of cupholder (alltrac has'm) since they're nice and tucked away under the console lid normally. The only drawback really is that they won't hold a soda can since there's no bottom to them, the can just drops into your console... I ALMOST made a huge mess the first time I dropped a can in there. :hehe:

Sounds like you're missing the swing-down bar. Holds cans perfectly. I'll take pics. The cupholders on fourth gens were really genius, imo.

Ah, well that makes sense, I never really looked at the bottom but I'm sure I'll see the broken mounting points for the missing bottom piece.

well low and behold i waited long enough and i found one....swing bar and all.....but the console is missing the lid.....if 4th gens came with cupholders did it come with a lid on the console? i kinda like my lid and have come to like my console lid to lean on.

Can't you just add the holder to your console?

The two lid types are interchangable, both are prone to the plastic hinge tearing and the front release clip breaking

The older type is far stronger and you can't swap the outer skin
The newer type is very flimsy and prone to cracking when weight is placed on it, the outer skin can be swapped
for a different colour
(I've had to re-enforce my lids with pieces of 3mm perspex under the skin!)

Here are the two types together
http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/rr292/_MrMagoo/Cars/Toyota%20Celica/P9300001.jpg

you can't use the older cover with the cup holder, it needs the extra space under the lid. (see pic)

The cup holders themselves are extreemly brittle and the retaining clips are prone to breaking
which leads to the cup holder falling open and your sunglasses getting flattened when you try
to close it next

Adding a cup holder is not as great as you would think, check the hinges & clips are OK before wasting your money.
You need to buy both parts for it to work

Another alternative is the DIN type cup holders sold on EBAY etc

The no cup holder thing used to bug the crap out of me. Then I just got a mug that was so wide on the bottom that it can not possibly tip over if all 4 wheels are on the ground. I set it on the floor next to me.

It was a gift but says starbucks on it. I do not see it currently on their site. It's shaped kinda like a turned over cereal bowl with a small cup on top. I found a photo.

ymmv

I've never had a problem with my cup holders.....but I'm anal about taking care of the car so............there you go. I did break one of the slide arms once, but I replaced it immediately. I can see how the hinge would break if it goes back too far without the slide arms to stop it.

i just did this the easy way...bought a car with them in it and swapped interiors.......ill have the car pics up soon.

Further to Stig's info on cupholders, in North America they came on the facelift 88-89 models, but the 86-87 ones lacked them.
