Rockslide. They are not reopening it for the season.

We need to reroute.

Well Damn.
We sure as hell better still have it. I have reservations and have already taken the day off week. I hope I didn't jinx the run by deciding to show up this year!!!

Seriously, needs to happen or I cry.

So, now I got to figure out what to put on the shirts. The great dragon detour?

Will the skyway still be open? We can start at the back end and just run the Skyway.

Another option is doing a Pigeon Forge meet like they used to back in the day.

Murgatroy
03-29-2010, 05:01 AM
The Great Dragon Detour... I like that.

No, I really don't want to deal with the mess that is Pigeon Forge.

Doing the Skyway up and back is looking like the best option, but the drive would be brutal.

I am thinking 360 to 165 to 143.

That is down 411 to ~10 miles past the 129 turn off, down Citico Road to Ball Play Road then River Road into the Skyway. From there we can either go back down the way we came and take 68 all the way back to the interstate and then Knoxville. Or we can go through Robbinsville, pick up 28 and follow it to 441 and back through Pigeon Forge. Which again takes us through the mess that is that area.

The bummer is, having the Dragon closed, anything that will include the Skyway will add 3+ hours to the run if not double that to get home.

Having a Pigeon Forge meet might be interesting. Inform us oh ye old folk.

I think lodging is significantly more expensive in PF than in Knoxville, right?

I'm not a fan of the Skyway in my Celica. It won't be able to get up the road well at all.

As a sidebar to this. What happens to members of Ctech (Uhh... like me) who don't have a dragon under their name, who go this year, but don't technically run the dragon...? Do we get a little pigeon slaying icon? Lol? Totally kidding btw. I'm down with whatever re-route as all I was planning on doing was following Murg (3 feet from his bumper) anyway.

I know there is a shorter way to the Skyway. I found it once on accident. It was the first time I tired to go to the dragon on my own and I wandered crazy back roads for a while and ended up on the skyway. It might be time to use google earth or something to find these routes.

Carb homie.

I need to get it tuned, and I have no idea who can do it locally for me. I'd prefer someone teach me how to do it. My dad hasn't touched one in 30+ years and can't remember how to do it.

But back on topic:

I think finding a way to the Fontana Dam would be cool for some pictures, perhaps at night time if we can get some good cameras

Well, I was going to make the cross-country trek...

You all better come out to California and join me on the Giant Sequoia Climb and Dive.

I'll get a map, I did it once in the GT. Amazing. You literally get out at the top and are breathless from the sudden lack of O2 being at 8,000 feet.

Tellico, Cherohala, 129,64, 294, 68 Tellico.

I like this. I have done this route many times. Good drive, nice scenery, not as technical as the Dragon. It is more heavily populated though.

So, I75 South to 68, 68 to 143, 143 to 129. 129 to 64. 64 to 294. 294 to 68. 68 to I75 north back to Knoxville.

I will make the run myself in the next week or two and make sure everything is hunky dory and time it.

So, the question falls to now, who are the dedicated leaders?

Cappy can be one. Murgy can be one. Josh can be one (if he farkin shows up on time and sticks with the group - sorry Josh, but you have a tendancy to go off and do your own thing sometimes)

How many groups are we gonna need?

I went to Deal's Gap just last Saturday. Supposedly, according to the biker lodge/store, the Dragon will be re-opened within a month or so.

If not, we can always go to the Fontana Dam. I got some good pics last weekend of mine and my buddies cars below it. It would also be a good place to meet at and take some group pictures.

This is understandable. This is also the exact reason I am expecting attendance to drop. We had 50+ cars last year. I expected 70+ this year. Now with the Dragon closed, I will be pleased if 30 cars show.

The Dragon is a big part of the meet, camaraderie is the other part. Without the Dragon, 'new' folks will be less likely to show.

However, I will not let something like the Dragon being closed stop us. There is always next year. But the show must go on.

I would like us to go to Deal's Gap. They are good people. Their business is going to be hurt very badly this season. I want them to know they have the support of the enthusiast community. This is a yearly thing for us. Not a 'Hey, I want to run the Dragon once before I die.'

2.5 Hour trip to Dragon (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=knoxville,+tn&daddr=US-441+S+to:NC+28733+%28Fontana+Village+Resort%29&geocode=FT63JAIdnXj_-impQs5GIhZciDHFNPXE2pLqew;FfkWHgIdfOEI-w;FTanHAIdMf0A-yEPO2RRx2-FTQ&hl=en&mra=mr&mrcr=0&via=1&sll=35.413117,-83.49678&sspn=0.27253,0.614548&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=35.599252,-83.663635&spn=1.087579,2.458191&z=9)

Then of course people could run the skyway after or return the routes back to town.
The first map is what I proposed, but it would require us doubling back on ourselves, which didn't bother me. However, the Captain suggested following 129 out and coming back 294 to 68. I like that route, as I have run it several times.

Running that second map, during the start of tourist season on a Saturday is madness. It would take us six hours or more just to get through Pigeon Forge. I know you like Pigeon Forge, and you know I hate it, but the traffic is the biggest reason.

Once we get to Deal's Gap at the 'midway' point, I guess we can split the group on those that want to run back across the Skyway and those that want to try a new route.

At this point with the Dragon being offlimits, it is just about some driving and fellowship.

Ok. Just something I found on another board, that is trying to figure out how to get there. If they don't work, they don't work.

According to www.dealsgap.com
This is a email received from TN State Sen Doug Overbey.

Brad,

Rep. McCord and I just had a meeting with TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. Comm. Nicely indicated he thinks they have the law enforcement piece worked out or nearly worked out for the Highway Patrol to patrol the Dragon during daylight hours (8 to 8). They do not, however, have the EMS piece worked out and he says it will take a written commitment from North Carolina that the state of North Carolina can provide suitable and appropriate EMS coverage. This written commitment needs to come from someone in North Carolina with authority to commit the resources to provide EMS coverage and needs to be addressed jointly to Commissioner Nicely and Safety Commissioner Mitchell. If such a letter is and can be forthcoming, please favor me with a copy.

As you can see folks TN is stepping up to the plate here and working on the deal. Now the ball is back in our court in NC and will continue to work the deal. Thanks for everyones support. If we get this deal done it will be our turn to support the THP and EMS units on the gap by working together to keep it safe so they can complete the clean up.

Dragon reopened by Wednesday of next week.

According to our friends at www.dealsgap.com the Dragon should be reopened by Wednesday of next week, waiting now for all the paperwork to be signed so the barricade can be moved.

Key things to remember:

1- It will not be one way traffic, you have to turn around and come back to the resort.

2- Two way traffic will mean crossing the double yellow puts you at risk as well as other motorcycle riders. Will result in serious injury or a fatality.

3- THP will patrol ever day until the slide is gone, this is for our protection NOT I say again NOT to write endless tickets and use it as a revenue builder.

For once we can have the dragon without semi traffic on it!

If the news is the same next week, I will buy it.

I don't believe anything posted April 1rst.

If this is so, then we are good to go, rolling back to original plan.

Murg, I don't think original plan would work. I think the road will still be closed at the landslide. From reading the post, it sounds like you have to enter from the south at the Deals Gap shop and go north on 129 until you get to the landslide, then turn around and come back.

True. So we still have to do like we rerouted for. It just gives us the option of running the Dragon when we get there.

Dragon to open by Monday 4/12/2010

Apr 7th

Posted by ZGN in Tail of the Dragon Closed

Information provided by www.dealsgap.com
Tennessee Senator Overbey & North Carolina Senator Snow,

The department is eager to open this facility and we believe that we will have everything on the Tennessee side ready to allow opening the road from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM 7 days a week beginning next Monday, April 12, 2010.

As a follow up to our recent discussions regarding the partial opening of US 129 to traffic, the department seeks your assistance in clarifying some issues that emergency service providers in Tennessee have brought to our attention.

First, the department has been successful in working with the Tennessee Highway Patrol to provide law enforcement on the closed section of US 129 between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM, 7 days per week until the slide can be cleared and the roadway opened. The department has been able to secure approval from the FHWA to pay for the THP overtime required through federal emergency relief funds. The plan will be to provide at a minimum 2 patrol units between the slide and the state line between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. This source of funding are not available for emergency medical services.

We will also be putting signage on US 129 at the State line entering Tennessee, advising motorist that there will be limited emergency medical services on the dead end section of road.

The final issue that we are trying to address is that of emergency services for personal injury crashes that law enforcement and EMS entities in Blount County have brought to our attention. Your assistance in getting a commitment from Graham County, North Carolina to provide EMS coverage is much appreciated.

Prior to the slide, 911 calls in his area would come to the Blount County EMS. The crashes would first be responded to by THP or the Blount County Sheriff. They in turn would contact the local fire department who would decide, based on conversations with law enforcement, what kind of EMS to send to the site (ambulance only, or ambulance and extraction units). Injured motorist would then be driven or life flighted to trauma facilities in Blount or Knox Counties. Response times to crashes in this vicinity were on the order of 1 hour.

The department does not expect response times to be identical to pre-slide time frames, however, we feel that we need to have a reasonable expectation of what to expect under this proposal from North Carolina to provide emergency medical services. Emergency service providers in Blount County are particularly concerned in this regard. It is our understanding that Graham County, North Carolina EMS has a response time somewhat longer than the 1 hour from the Tennessee side and that no trauma facilities exist near the North Carolina side of the slide and the nearest trauma center is located in Ashville, a considerable distance away. We also understand that Graham County EMS has very limited equipment and may not be able to assist in a timely fashion when the need arises.

We are seeking a plan from North Carolina that lays a strategy for addressing emergency medical services. We feel that they need to provide the State of Tennessee with a plan that provides a schedule and a identifies equipment and resources available to provide emergency medical services (ambulance and extraction) to this section of road.

With this information, the department can ensure a safe transportation facility to the users of US 129.

The department will continue to work diligently to reopen the road due to the slide as soon as possible.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation seeks a response to this request as soon as possible.

Please feel free to contact me at Paul.Degges@tn.gov or by phone at (615) 741-0791.

Paul D. Degges, P.E.
Assistant Commissioner/Chief Engineer
Tennessee Department of Transportation

But do we really want to drive what will essentially still be a construction site?

Are you serious? The landslide is a couple miles north of where the dragon starts. The dragon is landslide free.

The landslide is near where the lake is a good few miles before the dragon starts. We shudnt hit any construction.

The landslide happened where we normally stop for pictures. That is a bit before the Dragon proper.
