View Full Version : 3sge questions

so, i will be putting my Gen 1 3SGE together fully very soon for my swap.

i've run into a bit of a snag. i will detail those issues as clearly, and quickly as possible.

i am uncertain of what brackets are needed to mount the alternator, and what order those brackets are installed onto the engine.

there are coolant and vacuum lines that run on the engine from the fuel rail area (near cylinder 1) all the way to the coolant neck (near cylinder 4, just above the transmission), and then to the radiator, etc. i have NO IDEA where any of this stuff goes at all.

i am uncertain what vacuum lines actuate the TVIS system and where they lead.

directions, photos or screaming are all welcome. :)

now, IF the BGB does go into excessive detail (i can ONLY hope!), please point me in that direction and i will GLADLY bury myself into that book. :)

many thanks!

Yes, the BGB has ALL the information you need.

I was pretty quick to tear my 3sge to pieces to scrap it, I don't recall where all those lines run. But I know the BGB will have all the information you need.

If you can post pics, that also helps us to help you, and I'm sure Mario will chime in here soon too...

aok! i'll go take pix in just a bit and post them asap!

as you can see by the photos, it is literally the intake manifold (with TVIS plate), injectors, fuel rail, water pump housing and coolant neck.

if you need more detailed photos, please let me know!

Here's the vac diagrams for the gen1 3sge engine. This should help get you started.

thank you very much! :) now i see even MORE parts that were stolen from my bin of parts... great.

Get everything you need parts wise, and we can arrange for me to come out and help you.
I am in Napa.
If you need to get hold of me, send a PM and leave your name, phone number and a time to call you.
All the best in your project bud.

wow!!!! mario, thank you very much for the offer. :) i'll only call on it, if i run into something that i cannot figure out. :) i don't want to call on a favor like that unless its absolutely necessary...

as things stand, i need to head off to Dublin Toyota to get some parts today. such as: the alternator tensioner for a non-a/c setup (and the accompanying belt), the fuel rail insulators (and accompanying bolts), intake manifold bolts...

right now though, i'm looking on ebay to buy a BGB for the 3sge... :)

on another note, i must say, i am VERY impressed with the response of info/help here on celicatech... on Mr2oc, and various subaru boards, i've not had this kind of response (except by 1 person on the subaru boards)!

i have dearly missed driving my aw11, and once the 3sge is in it and running, i do not believe that i'll ever be going back to the subaru boards really, as once the aw11 runs, i'll be selling my subaru.

ok. went to toyota of dublin and attempted to order the following parts:

intake bolts
fuel rail bolts
fuel rail insulators
flywheel bolts

of that list, ONLY the flywheel bolts have NOT been discontinued.

so, at this point, if anyone has spare parts for sale that help with the above list, let me know!

i'll be adding/subtracting from this list as time goes on...

beyond that, in the near future, i'll be looking to sell my 99 Subaru RS. i will be looking for a 86-89 Celica GTS hatchback as its replacement! :) although, a Corolla FX16 (preferably GTS) or a Starlet are DEFINITELY on that list too!

I was gonna keep it to myself but its for the greater good! Lol. Pick and pull in newark has three 3sge celicas, two of which probably have those parts. Btw, where in p-town are you? I'm right over the freeway in dublin.

03-25-2010, 09:55 PM
right near santa rita and w. las positas.

i saw that Pick N Pull now has an 'inventory' search function! :) i'll be making a trip to newark pretty soon here! :) and yeah, i saw that newark had a stack of 86-89 celica's 2 weeks ago... just havent had a moment to run out there...

cool swap, i put a 1st gen in a mk 2
you can probably plug or cap a lot of the vacuum lines that were for the celica. the ones you'll defintly need is the big one on the left is for the brake assist, the little tube above cyl 2 is for the fpr and one of the two above cyl 4 is for the tvis. the other one is for ac idle up. you can use either one, it goes to the vacuum holding cannister below the intake. that other line on the left went to the celicas power steering unit. the one with all the hard lines on it, you could eliminate that too.

mike, thanks for the info. :)

being that i do NOT know the 3SGE very well at all, could you use the part numbers on the diagram to detail what you've said above?

if not, no worries. :) i've got actual copies of the BGB for the 4th gen Celica on the way! :)

also, please bear in mind... no power steering, no abs, no a/c. :)

one other quick question... when you did the swap into the MKII Mr2, i'm guessing the original engine was the 5SFE. what was the response/characteristics of the car like afterward?

my 5s was shot when i got the car so i can't really say if it's better, but it is very quick in the 3k to 5k range. it should be awesome in an aw11.
i'll try to get some pictures of mine today and get them to you. might have to email though if i can't post them up here.

email sent. sorry my pm box was full.

many thanks for the pix! :) they are helpful... but, at the moment, i'll need to make sure that all of the vacuum lines are connected properly, as the California State BAR does not look kindly upon plugged vacuum lines and the such. :/

but, i'll be altering that a bit later. :)

04-26-2010, 12:52 AM
<< OLD - What city are you in again? Sorry I forgot. :)

04-26-2010, 12:57 AM
pleasanton. right at the 580/680 interchange.

before you head over, if that is your plan, i want to head to the local auto parts store and buy about 10ft of vacuum lines. :)

04-26-2010, 12:59 AM
Want to plan for next Sunday maybe?

04-26-2010, 01:45 AM
next sunday works for me... fyi, if you're allergic to cats, then this place will not work for you, as we do have 2 cats.

beyond that, from the pix (on my swap thread), you might be able to tell that engine itself is resting on the ground.

the task at the moment is to finish the vacuum lines, find out what i'm missing... and thats it.

04-26-2010, 07:50 AM
I own a cat as well, so no worries. ;)

PM me your address and all that good stuff and I will try to plan it out.

06-03-2010, 05:15 AM
i did some work on my 3SGE sunday and today. i am missing 2 items.
bvsv 23263 - this leads from the throttle body towards the transmission (from what the diagram shows)
valve 17630 - this rests under the vacuum hardline (pipe 17361G) that is under the intake manifold, which then loops back onto itself.

i will post the photo of the vacuum diagram shortly.

upon closer inspection (yes, just a few moments worth)... what is the point of the 17361G pipe? i see that is goes from cylinder 1 area of the intake manifold, back to the intake manifold at the throttle body.

my aw11 does not have power steering or a/c. so, if this would impact either, then i'll just cap off both AFTER state BAR is done. :)

but yet... what does that thing do?

06-03-2010, 05:27 AM
Valve 17630 goes to the Power Steering Pump.

06-03-2010, 05:36 AM
bless your heart good sir! :)

it appears that i'll be capping off those 2 ends of the intake manifold ASAP! :)

btw - near the throttle body area, there are 2 nipples that it could fit onto. does it go into the the nipple nearest the rear firewall or the one closer to the head? and what does the other one lead to?

06-03-2010, 09:10 AM
here is the vac diagram for my 5sfe it should be very close to the 3sge

are you talking about the nipple for the vac lines coming from the PS? also we should get together and you can look at my vac lines most of them will be the same

the question is... when do you have time?

as requested by Jordan...

06-04-2010, 05:51 AM
ill bet thats the iacv, blow through the ports and see if the air goes into the TB or if it comes back out one of the other ports

a cool site i found

06-04-2010, 07:53 AM
that diagram is great! i'll be using this as reference, along with the other, this weekend.

the only problem is that the 'to p/s pump' does not show the other end of it. i'll pour through my BGB and see if i can find it.

thanks again for the assistance jordan. :)

no problem man
