View Full Version : Craigslisted BBS RXII Wheels!

So awhile back, I set out to look for another set of wheels to take my winter tires. I eventually landed on a craigslist ad for a set of 16" BBS RXII Wheels off a 2001 Wolfsburg Ed. Jetta. Sounded like another pretentious VW owner, who apparently did not know how to use eBay of google. The ad was for $100, and after we met and talked about them, I walked away with 4 BBS wheels, and he got $75.

I have a photo of them somewhere, they were in pretty rough looking shape. 8 winters in NE Ohio, and the paint was bubbled and rough. I started stripping them, but got caught up in school and whatnot. Now I am finally close to completing them.

The RXII's are a two piece, aluminum alloy wheel. I am refinishing the rim in silver, and the center hub in dark grey. I went through a couple triple squares on the titanium alloy bolts that hold the wheels together. I said "screw it" and just opted for masking. They will be completely finished next week after I paint the center hubs.

BBS wheels are available on a number of 2000+ Toyota vehicles, so I figured, these still keep close to what is stock available from the dealership. I need a set of 2.25" center caps, as the caps I was sent are 2.5". Photos!

In order the wheels were:

Cleaned with soap and water
Aircraft Paint Remover applied and chipped at
Stripped w/ an angle grinder (BBS paint either sucks, or can't be removed)
Cleaned w/ lighter fluid
1 coat Duplicolor Metal Etching Primer
Cleaned with alcohol and cloth
2 coats Duplicolor Filler Primer
Sanded between coats
Cleaned with alcohol and cloth
3 coats Duplicolor Wheel Paint, Silver (2 light, 1 wet)
3 coats Duplicolor Wheel Clear Coat (2 light, 1 wet)

I have to wait 4-5 days for the clear coat to harden properly, before I sand anything and paint the center hub with the Gunmetal color. On my white 7th Gen Wheels, I made the mistake of mounting before hardening, and the sloppy mechanics chipped a lot of the paint off around the bead.

I'll have rubber on these, and they'll be mounted back on a car, without center caps, next week!

Mmm, final color...

I am going to wait a week for everything to harden before I get my Yokohamas mounted on them.

damn that looks good, and i usally dont like any other wheel color other than chrome or silver

Thanks! I was like, "damn", when I was in the paint booth.

The wheels my GT came with were weird 15" alloys that were painted matte black. They looked like steelies, so I decided if I was ever going to go dark with wheels again, gunmetal was the color. The "carbon fiber" trim on the Celica is this color, so at least it matches.

They'll get mounted next week, I want the paint to fully harden on these. I also need to get a set of center caps. I am still debating getting a set of Toyota caps:

Or the more aftermarket look with BBS:

I got a cheap set of Prius center caps. I guess they're in low demand because of all the news coverage.

BBS wants a silly amount for plastic caps. I got a set of high quality RED decals that I'll affix to the VW caps I already have.

BBS also wants over $200 for a set of rebranded McGard lug nuts. I'll be getting my McGard set through Summit (preferred store). I could customize those too, but I like the silver...

So, I finally got me my McGard Lug Nuts via Summit Racing. Interesting side note; the 6-lug wheel pack is $8 cheaper then the 5-lug wheel pack. I got 4 extra lugs, plus wheel locks, and valve stems. Not too shabby.

eBay sent me the wrong caps, still waiting on them to update this. Wheels turned out great. Still in love with the GT-S white ones. Looking like I may part with the BBS rims, which is crazy for the effort put into them.

Thanks! Haha, nooooo... Christine is the name of my evil ride.

lol lady.

Haha, no comment. I was going to say something about the screen name of the person asking me the question. Didn't want to make things too creepy where I am showing off my wheels.

hahaha okk evil ride. what kind of silver did u use for ur wheels?? is it just silver?
or is it silver something?

It is Duplicolor Silver Wheel Paint. They only have a few colors in their wheel paint.

Silver, Black, Gunmetal, Gold, White and Clear.

I need to post the results. They look good, but I think I will keep my white GT-S wheels.
