My friend is talking shit with his 2009 Corolla S haha. Lemme break it down for you:

His car is bone stock manual trans

Mine is stock except it has a weapon R intake that I just added. (This one http://www.racinglab.com/weapon-r-intake-dr-toyota-celica-002.html my old one was holy..lol) Also an automatic.

He isn't all that great on a stick, I drive an auto and I can drive a stick about as well as he can having only used one 5-6 times.

Anyway, in a 1/4 mile (legal) who would win?

(Celica GT 0-60 8.4)
(Corolla S 0-60 9.1)

He would win. Sorry.

I raced a Corolla S and lost it was a manual with an intake and I had an intake also. I lost.

(Celica GT 0-60 8.4)

"1990 Toyota Celica GT-S 10.5 17.6
1991 Toyota Celica GT Conv. 9.8 17.1
1994 Toyota Celica GT 8.4 16.4"
http://www.exoticcarsite.com/0-60-quarter-mile-times.htm

Ok, this now has me confused as hell, how did the convertible manage to beat the GT-S by .7 seconds? I know the GT-S is heavier than the GT, but don't the convertibles weigh a lot more, and didn't they mostly come in automatics?

I was originally going to say that his 0-60 time was optimistic, and I still think it is, but I don't really trust these figures anymore, not like I had a lot of stock in a website called "exoticcarsite" that lists Toyota anyway...

He will win. Variable Valve Timing vs. 20 year old engine?

Less weight, less drivetrain loss, not to mention the fact that your car probably isn't making the same power as it was when new. As long as he can drive somewhat well you lose unless you pull one of his spark plug wires. But enough yapping just go out there and race him.

He should swack you.

VVTI is pretty nice, but it mostly depends on the driver, you should try him

Corolla S is actually no faster than the base model corolla at 132 hp. Corolla XRS are the ones with a little more horsepower, I think 154. The weight of the car is about the same, corolla is about 100lbs lighter.

He may win since he has a manual transmission, although the celica handles better, but there's not much in it. Corollas are basic commuter cars, the Corolla S is just a fancier trim (like the celica GTS vs GT). The only modern Toyota shitter than a corolla is the Yaris.

All the upgrades in the engine in the last decade have gone to making it more efficient a 1.8 liter making the same horsepower as a 20 year old 2.2 liter. The 5sfe makes 135 hp. It's a fair race, the better driver will win.

Dudes, automatic 5th gen celicas are made of serious fail.

The Corolla will walk all over him. I promise.

Most new cars will probably beat you, Be they Toyota Corolla or Honda Fit. They have more efficient engines, damn technology :p

i think he has a chance agaist a fit, my 200,000 mile beater ran away from one from a light, that was the saddest race ever though

Corolla XRS are 170hp, 2zz-ge= LIFT!!!!... and it would smoke the GT

02-19-2010, 06:51 PM
yeah but he's bench racing a corolla s. not an xrs. and either one would smoke it. n/a 5th gens are heavy slow pigs. but yeah, matteo80 was wrong about the xrs having only 154 ponies

matteo80
02-19-2010, 08:06 PM
nope 2009 xrs only makes 158 hp

http://www.jbcarpages.com/toyota/corolla/2009/

an xrs would beat a na 5th gen. but a Corolla s is just a corolla with a bodykit, I've driven one, they are no faster than a 5th gen and they don't handle that well.

Most cars in Toyotas current lineup will beat an old celica, but not a corolla.

^ you are right the 10th gen Corolla XRS are 158 hp
but the 9th gen XRS are 170 hp

9th gen> 10 gen

I have an alltrac camry 5speed with a 3sgte (stock for now) and my buddies corolla s stays neck and neck with me, even after i spank him on the launch.

http://www.zeroto60times.com/Toyota-0-60-mph-Times.html

2009 Toyota Corolla (1.8L) 0-60 mph 8.4 Quarter mile 16.8

1991 Toyota Celica GT Convertible 0-60 mph 9.7 Quarter mile 16.9

That is a 91 convertible which is about 100lbs heavier than a gt. So their quarter mile times would be the same.

The race really would be about who is the best driver. I can't see how anyone can claim the Corolla S would spank a celica. Corollas are slow, commuter cars. Celicas aren't very fast either.

There clearly is only one way to settle the argument and that is for the OP to race and post times.

it all depends on the driver and what has been done to the car, i raced and wan against a 07 mazda 3 i sport and they are not slow they do a 0-60 in about 8.5 sec and have a 1/4 mile of about 15.5sec with a top speed of 118mph.

And I bet you the 91 was a manual. 5S + auto trans = the suck.

PS: 8th Gen Corolla was lighter than a Celica (2400lbs) and could handle well (Last of the corollas with IRS, instead of the ghey twist beam).

Damn, looks like they did go with the 2AZ-FE for the 2009+ corolla xrs. I guess the Lotus is the only car with a 2ZZ now.

This site is on crack.. this is proof that stock values on paper, from the factory, make little sense in comparison with real world testing...

Ex:

2000 Toyota Echo 0-60 mph 8.4 Quarter mile 16.5
1987 Toyota Celica GT-S 0-60 mph 8.5 Quarter mile 16.3

?

The Toyota Echo (I like them, they have [some] potential, i like them, i like them, etc..), is painfully slow.. but two tenths slower than an 87 GTS in the 1/4 mile?..

Seriously?... I've driven them... They are slow. Unless it's running airplane fuel, this seems impossible.

P.s. Automatics generally have faster quarter mile times than Manual versions of the same car... unless you're the Stig maybe

celicaGTS_T

add time and wear on the vehicles and the times wont be as listed..... something else to consider.

jaydog82
02-21-2010, 02:10 AM
if you have ever seen a TB off a echo you would know the potential would start with an engine swap, the TBs a crazy small, close to 40mm

Well I won the race by a little over a second. We didn't have a friend there to record us sadly =[

I did drive his car a bit after and it is a bit faster than mine though, like I said, he's just terrible on a stick.

Hey, kind of a random update. I raced him with him driving my car and me in his Corolla and beat him by 1.8 seconds, so it really came down to the driver. As I said, he is just terrible with a stick.

i put $$$ on the corolla anyday. my auto matrix w/ the old 1zzfe is already good for a 130hp 2800 lbs car. i can keep up w/ a 99 celica gt 5sfe 5spd, w/ cai, header, exhuast...
