View Full Version : "Chaos Theory"

02-06-2010, 08:04 PM
Chaos has been around a while now. She and I have been doing this game we call love for nearly a decade.

Through this decade, she has gone through a few stages.

I will try to detail these as accurately and closely as possible.

She is Twenty this year, and she portrays her age gracefully.

She has gone from stock, to ricer, to mild stock and now rat rod import canyon carver.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of her stock form, but who here hasn't seen what a 1990 Celica ST looks like?

Not long after Chaos came into my life, she was laden with gifts, gifts that at the time were cool. And to all the haters, I still think she looked hot.

Chaos' first gift was a set of Enkei RS6 wheels, the massive wing soon followed. A little bit of detailing, some window tint and smoked lights, and Chaos showed up to her first meet looking quite the spectacle.

A few years later the wing came off and Chaos went back to mild stock, keeping her new shoes.

It would be a few years again before any major changes occurred, and sadly it would be a major one.

On an evening coming home from work, Chaos had what we like to call 'The Guardrail Incident.' After swerving to avoid an individual who missed his exit, Chaos had an abrupt introduction to a steel guardrail at around 70 miles an hour.

We survived, worse for the wear.

It would take a bit of work, and the replacement of a few parts like axles and wheel bearings, but Chaos was a trooper. Even in her diminished shape, she continued to be the daily driver for my entire family, ensuring that we could survive.

It would be during this time that her trusty Enkei wheels, which had been so steadfast (and lasting through 3 sets of tires) would be fatally wounded.

Through no fault of my wife's. And I mean that, she didn't have anything to do with the problem... Chaos seemed to weld her lugnuts to her wheel studs.

Due to the design of the RS6, it was nearly impossible to remove the spline drive lugs. Tapping, beating, drilling, all routes were impervious.

Enter the cut off wheel.

I replaced some wheel studs, got her some new wheels, and Chaos was back up and running in no time.

A little bit of effort, a new door, hood and a fender and she was mostly straight again, if a bit mismatched.

But the look has grown on us.

It is throughout this time that she also received a set of EDM Celica headlight housings, which are pretty nifty. They are glass H4 housings that curve to meet the contours of the 5th Gen.

Now, that is not to say that our tale is not fraught with tragedy either.

Chaos has been vandalized three times, costing her much damage and myself many dollars of loss. She has had her driver's side window smashed twice, lost her system, console lid and bending her decklid quite badly. This also lead to her passenger side hinge to break. She was also backed into once, causing damage to her door, which was worsened weeks later when 'The Guardrail Incident' occurred. And then most recently, she was hit again while she sat in her parking spot minding her own.

So now that you think you know Chaos, sit back and watch as this thread progresses to show what is to come.

Her most recent gift is a set of Megan Racing coilovers that should be here this week. She will be receiving new ball joints and tie rod ends at the same time, before being fitted for her latest set of tires.

So much history. Keep the stories coming Murg.

Mr. Babb
02-07-2010, 03:59 AM
I like the new wheels Murg! I know you've had them for a while just thought I would share!

02-07-2010, 03:59 AM
They grow on you. Dropping her will help a bit.

02-07-2010, 04:45 AM
I like your old wheels.
They'd match my new CF AT hood. :P

02-13-2010, 04:27 AM
keep up the good work, didnt u have a missed matched set of 17s ?

02-14-2010, 09:26 PM
No, I just have 3 Enkeis and a full set of the Drags.

02-15-2010, 04:55 AM
Very nice Murg.

Did you tint the windows yourself or take it to a shop?

02-15-2010, 02:24 PM

I don't have the patience to do window tint anymore. I have done it in the past several times, but I don't care to do it again.

02-15-2010, 02:41 PM
Yeah, shop is so much easier, I'd rather throw money at window tint and have a lifetime warranty on it.

02-17-2010, 01:34 AM
A big heavy mystery box arrived today...

Update soon.

02-17-2010, 04:40 AM
Does the contents make your car go up and down both more and less?

02-17-2010, 02:13 PM
Why yes they do!

I can't wait to get them installed.

02-17-2010, 06:55 PM
Write-up Murg. You said you would. :)

02-18-2010, 12:58 AM
<--- is McInterested....

02-19-2010, 04:04 AM
Write-up Murg. You said you would. :)

I may have to reneg on that. Due to time constraints, I am gonna drop by a shop in the morning and get a quote on the install, along with tires and an alignment.

Time is now the enemy since the Buick is down.. :(

02-19-2010, 06:38 AM
upper intake gasket?

nevermind i just read o/t

02-21-2010, 01:39 AM
Today was a big day.

Pictures tomorrow.

Tires, in 215/40/17 flavor, balljoints, tie rod ends, coilovers and an alignment for good measure.

02-21-2010, 01:43 AM
Sounds like a nice day. I put a HID kit in my Lancer today. Yours is more exciting

02-21-2010, 01:46 AM
shes lookin sexy murg. keep it up. one of my fav cars on the site.

02-21-2010, 03:28 AM
cant wait for the pics

btw did u still need anything from that wtb thread u made awhile ago, and would u want to sell your center caps from your old wheels?

02-21-2010, 04:26 AM
The Enkeis?

I only have three centercaps left.

02-21-2010, 04:47 AM
The Enkeis?

I only have three centercaps left.

ill take em but could u measure the hole and take a pic of the backside of em whenever u get a chance

btw u still need that mirror i found it, i just kept forgetting to tell u, had some other random interior stuff as well

02-21-2010, 02:12 PM
The Driver's side?

I think I am gonna roll to the P-a-P today, I really need new fenders.

02-21-2010, 02:13 PM
Thoughts on the Coil-Overs:

The only problem I had with the Megans was a minor one, the brake likes did not fit into the brackets, they will have to be filed out, not much, maybe a mm or two.

I have only put about 20 miles on her since the install, I am planning a drive today. I currently have them turned down to 15 from full hard, and that is rather stiff, for street driving it might be absurd. I am gonna go do some testing this morning and turn them down to about ~20-22 to see how that works.

Chaos is running 215/40/17 tires with a 40mm offset on a 7" rim. No front sway bar, no front strut brace, she is a coupe. She also received ball joints and new tie rod ends at the same time.

Steering is much sharper, and very crisp. She feels very planted. She is currently ~1.75" lower than she started, and I am getting minor contact on hard bumps. This could be due to body damage on her fender and quarter, so I will be doing some massaging as well, until I source widebody fenders.

More thoughts to follow.

02-21-2010, 04:58 PM
Pictures as promised!

Low enough?

02-21-2010, 04:58 PM
The inner fender liners are gonna have to come out.

02-21-2010, 10:33 PM
The inner fender liners are gonna have to come out.

They shouldn't need to. Why do you want to pull them?

02-21-2010, 10:46 PM
Because he dropped it a ton.

02-21-2010, 10:54 PM
I know he did. Mine was dropped further and there was no need to remove them.
So I am curious as to why he's gonna pull em.

Did you remove yours Marshall? I cant remember anymore.

02-21-2010, 11:14 PM
The fenderliners are damaged, and they run, badly.

Plus with the widebody fenders, they won't fit anymore.

02-21-2010, 11:18 PM
So did you get out to the yard and find a set of fenders then Murg?
If so, or you are able in the future, I would pull the fender liners from the donor car.
If you are not going to do that, spend $40 on pint of POR15 and give the entire underside a good coat.
Those liners go a long way to preventing water and debris from getting into certain areas.
If they are no longer there, you are inviting rust to come play.

02-21-2010, 11:31 PM
No, I don't have them yet. I haven't been to the yard, I have been playing on the Dragon.

Man has to have his priorities you know.

02-21-2010, 11:36 PM
Did the wheel stud issue get taken care of yesterday at the shop?

02-21-2010, 11:40 PM
I guess. It wasn't seated all the way, but I can't get it to seat. The kid who did my alignment and tires was a special fellow. I don't think he liked Chaos. His vocabulary involved mostly four letter words and his face was stuck in a scowl.

I did feel even better this morning when I went back because I had a leaky valve stem, he didn't tighten it all the way.

My favorite part was when he told me he couldn't do the alignment because he couldn't get the tie rod ends to break, said I needed new ones before he could finish it.

The tie rod ends had been on her for less than three hours.

02-22-2010, 12:02 AM
Sounds "special"....:ugh:

There my friend, lies the difference between a Tech and a Tire Monkey.

02-22-2010, 01:04 AM
murg, i run to pap at least every 2 weeks. i will keep you poster as to what arrives.

02-23-2010, 04:37 PM
So I am having fun finding the sweet spot on the dampers.

With just me in the car, at 10 clicks from hard, she doesn't contact on anything harder than a 180* switchback. However, that is enough to unseat you on a solid bump at highway speeds. At 20 clicks from hard she contacts on on/off ramps, but rides very comfortable.

Right now, I am making plans to source the fenders, as I am not gonna play the 'how hard can I be comfortable without contact' game.

Once the widebody fenders are on, I will get down to proper adjustments.

The rears at 15 from hard feel just right.

I also have some 1/4" spacers for the rear.

02-23-2010, 06:56 PM
Really think those megans look good on there. I may have to invest in a set for Jasmine...

02-26-2010, 08:41 PM
So my passenger side headlight motor gave out last night.

Looks like I get to source a new one this weekend as well as some fenders. Then I need to install my rear spacers.

02-26-2010, 08:47 PM
what kind of spacers did you end up getting? size?

02-26-2010, 09:11 PM
1/4" spacers, they are just shims.

02-27-2010, 09:28 PM
Spacers and strut tower bar installed today. I also installed my radio bezel I have had in the trunk for a couple of years. I got tired of moving it around.

02-27-2010, 09:59 PM
does it look even now after the spacers?

02-27-2010, 10:00 PM
It brings the rears out a good chunk, making it look more even. They are now just a mm or two shy of contact with the fender lip, so that is about right.

02-27-2010, 10:06 PM
Did the headlamp get fixed as well?

02-27-2010, 10:14 PM

The only 5th gen on the yard had the motors taken already.

I found a headlight for the Buick (and a hood and a fender and a door) and the strut tower brace for Chaos, but that was about it. The pickings were slim today. I only bought two pieces today.

02-27-2010, 10:38 PM

02-28-2010, 06:49 AM
nice, i like, btw i think u need to start a build thread for the buick

03-13-2010, 07:11 PM
Did an A Pillar Gauge pod install with some indiglo gauges.

Oil Pressure, Voltmeter and Water Temp, no more relying on idiot lights for me!

Also covered my headlight assembly in WD-40 and it works fine no, no shuddering, no slowness and the like.

Should get around to installing my CB next weekend.

03-13-2010, 08:56 PM
Nice. Thinking about doing the same on my lancer. I just dont know where to mount them so it doesnt look ricie. I dont want people to think Im trying to pretend I have a boost guage on my piller ya know.

04-03-2010, 03:21 AM
I got a new driver's side fender installed today.

Sadly it was red.

She is now three shades of red, two of grey and maroon.

05-26-2010, 06:39 PM

05-26-2010, 07:49 PM
You look so enthused in that before pic Murgy

You look so enthused in that before pic Murgy

Now you understand why I volunteered to skip the Dragon. ;)

07-05-2010, 12:12 AM
omg, another flat black 5th gen!!! more pics please :)

07-05-2010, 04:52 AM
I will try to dig some up, there are lots of them located here. (http://www.celicatech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47567)

07-11-2010, 08:01 PM
Just got back from PAP. There was an ST with a DTM exhaust. Not sure if you want to snag it. Also a GTS there. Did not see much I could use though.

05-15-2011, 07:45 PM
Alright, so in January, Chaos developed a case of rodnock.

So after gentle prodding from the folks on here, I accepted some donations, and an engine, and a transmission as well as some sweat, and starting tomorrow, Chaos is getting a new heart and a five speed swap.

To all of those patiently waiting for your blinkies, I will get those done after the Dragon when I do the Dragon blinkies.

Here she is loaded up ready to go.

05-15-2011, 10:35 PM
Good luck!

05-20-2011, 03:15 PM
Murg and Matt are gone. They rolled out around 4pm. The past few days had their ups and downs but we had a lot of fun. Overall the the swap went pretty much as planned. There was a lot of work to do and we pretty much spent all of our time together in the shop. We were like a bunch of sorry dogs by the end of each day.

So to sum things up Chaos got another motor, automatic to 5 speed conversion, and some custom exhaust work. The exhaust sounds loud and obnoxious. Just the way we like it.

Murg took me for a ride in Chaos and I got to feel what 60mph in a sharp turn feels like. It felt like we were in a straight away. That car handles nicely and the ride is smooth. I didn't expect that with coil overs.

I wish we could have spent more time just relaxing and shooting the shit but oh well. I had a great time with them and we bonded well. I hope Chaos gets plenty of miles out of that motor.

Enjoy some pics of the carnage.

Matt Loaded up and headed to Murg's house.

Murg leaving home.

The only picture of Matt. In a reflection while taking a picture of Chaos.

Murg arrives at my place.

Then the work begins the next morning.

Chaos gets a bath

Photo op time!

The first 5th Gen RWD Celica is born.

I copied this from Chaos Went Boom thread (http://www.celicatech.com/forums/showthread.php?51620-Chaos-went-boom...).

Chaos now has a lower mileage engine, and a five speed.

05-28-2011, 11:33 PM
well, how she do in the twistys

05-28-2011, 11:43 PM
well, how she do in the twistys

She's still fun.

05-29-2011, 12:03 AM
oh i bet, bet u are too

but i ment compared to before how'd chaos fair?

05-29-2011, 12:14 AM
About the same. I stay in second gear and she hauls.

05-29-2011, 03:11 AM
so was the 1st engine a freak 4a or does this one feel the same

05-29-2011, 03:33 AM
The first one was a freak. I feel like I lost a bit of power, we did all the same mods, advanced the timing, same intake, etc. The exhaust is different though, complete straight pipe, no cat. However I saved weight, and I can now shift my own gears.

I wouldn't say I lost a lot of power, it only feels like a few horses, but I can tell it.

Overall I am happy with the conversion.

06-04-2011, 11:29 PM
So after all of that work, Chaos broke. Well parts anyways.

Her exhaust manifold cracked, can you believe that? Between the #1 and #2 runner. Completely 360* with a chunk the size of a finger missing. So that created a nasty exhaust leak and caused her to be parked for the last two weeks.

Bruce shipped me my old exhaust manifold off of her first engine, and I installed that today. So she is loudly quiet again.

its really common an will happen again, either get a new one from ebay or get a header.

oh and u may have gained hp but lost torque due to no backpressure

10-03-2014, 12:27 AM
Back from the near dead.

Is leaving, to make room for this:

At the same time we will be doing a 4 wheel disc five lug swap, widebody front fenders and an RC nose.

Look for updates soon.

10-03-2014, 10:23 AM
Them pics, tho...

10-14-2014, 11:06 PM
This will be much better

10-14-2014, 11:13 PM
I am excited, we tear into it Monday.

10-14-2014, 11:32 PM
I am excited, we tear into it Monday.

I'm sad that I'll miss the actual work... well, only slightly.

10-14-2014, 11:41 PM
Mon-Thurs are the boring days.

Friday is where we scramble to fix all the shit we broke during the first half of the week.

Remember, this isn't our first rodeo.

I do think that I might put my brake pads on backwards, just because Bruce isn't here to do it for me this time.

True... true. Well, I won't be up there until later in the evening, damn near night time anyway.

10-20-2014, 09:34 AM
Save me the Auto HVAC stuffs!

10-20-2014, 10:21 AM
Phase one complete. Going to acquire phase two momentarily.

10-21-2014, 06:39 AM
Nineteen hours later, half a Celica followed me back.

10-21-2014, 10:53 AM
I should be there tomorrow around noon give or take.

10-22-2014, 01:30 AM
Like Kenny Rogers says, "You got to know when to fold them..."

The turbo was toast. We called Harry and Mindy and lined up a new turbo, then we pulled the head. We had a melted piston that scored the cylinder wall so bad that the block is toast.

All the other parts are good and we still have a lot of work to do, but swapping the 3SGTE isn't really in the plans right now.

10-22-2014, 02:38 AM
Damn. Sorry Murg.

10-22-2014, 03:09 AM
That sucks. sorry murg

10-22-2014, 04:57 AM
i have a 3rd gen 3s block, with st205 pistons, in an engine stand collecting dust....

remember? you saw it.

dont know how compatible is with a 2nd gen. only problem is i broke a bolt that holds the alternator or ac bracket to the block...

10-22-2014, 05:43 AM
Thank you Norberto, I will keep that in mind when we decide what we will do moving forward.

10-23-2014, 11:07 PM

Funniest picture I've seen in a long time... Lol

10-24-2014, 05:42 PM
my old nose

10-25-2014, 12:28 AM
Aaaaaaaaand BOOM!

10-25-2014, 12:28 AM
The truck didn't make it home on her own.

Let this be a lesson to the married guys out there. Don't buy your wive's shit and expect them to care, or take care of it.

10-25-2014, 12:34 AM

10-25-2014, 12:52 AM
What happened Murg?

10-25-2014, 01:25 AM
Timing chain.

Turns out that WAS the timing chain ticking, and not the pulley tensioner.

It was a 50/50 chance.

10-25-2014, 01:28 AM
I am going to put it on CL for 'interesting trades that don't need to be fed.'

I had to add the disclaimer because the wife said I can't have a pony.

Or dye said pony I can't have mane a rainbow.

Or call her Rainbow Dash.

10-25-2014, 03:47 AM
You might be ahead with a pony.

10-26-2014, 12:35 PM
The pig explodered?

10-26-2014, 04:35 PM
Yeah, the Pig exploded. I can't say I was surprised. It is not something I had hoped for, but it is like getting kicked in the face by a horse when you keep pulling on it's tail, it isn't something you are allowed to cry about.

But hey, Chaos runs semi-decent again...

10-26-2014, 04:47 PM
Yeah, kind of a kick in the nuts but at least you were close to home, had AAA with you and Chaos is now running. Could be worse.

10-26-2014, 05:12 PM
What did you end up transplanting back into chaos?

10-26-2014, 07:18 PM
Still 4AFE Grot. The 3S out of Bruce's car was toast. We found the coolant leak in Chaos and the 4A fired up and seems to be fine.

10-27-2014, 04:18 AM
At least she is running again. :)

She has fed now and soon her legend will grow.

10-27-2014, 06:09 PM

Chaos needs that hanging from its rearview.

10-27-2014, 07:05 PM
We have several Rainbow Dash stuffed animals.

And Harmony would be more correct. Rebecca and I are thinking of putting Rainbow Dash's Cutie Mark on Harmony's quarter before the next Dragon.

10-27-2014, 08:31 PM
i knew the 3s was toast, thats why i was curious what was in her.

10-28-2014, 02:54 AM
^Sorry Grot. That was mentioned earlier. We talked about trying to do a 5SGTE or a variant there of but there wasn't really time to try and do something like that. In the end the 4A was fixable so we left it at that for now.

03-19-2015, 11:25 PM
Chaos got her 'Historic Vehicle' plate yesterday. The last plate she'll ever have to put on.

I mean, who the fuck puts antique plates on a Toyota Celica? WTF?

03-20-2015, 02:27 AM

03-20-2015, 02:30 AM
That means it won't be long before I can put that plate on Ashley...

03-20-2015, 02:35 AM
That means it won't be long before I can put that plate on Ashley...
Nope. CO changed the law a few years ago. Otherwise both 4th gens would have them.

03-20-2015, 02:48 AM
Nope. CO changed the law a few years ago. Otherwise both 4th gens would have them.

Same here in CA. Only 1973 and older can do it here. :sadcry:

03-20-2015, 03:23 AM
Same here in CA. Only 1973 and older can do it here. :sadcry:
As I recall CO changed it in 2012, ONE FUCKING YEAR before the hatchback was eligible...

03-23-2015, 12:29 AM
Oh... Never mind then.

11-05-2017, 12:57 AM
I hate all of you motherfuckers. Chaos needs to come out from under her car cover. Sadly that is not the plan for a couple of years.

11-05-2017, 01:39 AM
Chaos will come out when she's ready.

11-06-2017, 01:19 PM
Chaos will come out when Bob stops spending money on other crap and neglecting her.

11-06-2017, 03:47 PM
Weird...Chaos sounds like Leia right now...

11-11-2017, 07:34 AM
Chaos is eternal. Fuck the non-believers :P :D

11-12-2017, 10:15 AM
Chris is right, if I could pick a sickness, Chaos would be done.

Harmony has a really nice set of wheels and soon a hell of a suspension.

11-12-2017, 10:19 AM
To be fair the plan is to get Harmony well sorted (for a V6) and then finish Chaos when the Heathen is nearing driving age. Teach her to wrench on Chaos, and how to drive, then give her Harmony. This will ruin her for any stock car. Ever.

11-13-2017, 03:26 AM
It'll also be expensive for you until she gets a job. Someone will need to pay for performance parts...

11-14-2017, 12:59 AM
Are you insinuating that my little princess is spoiled? Any of them?

11-14-2017, 02:32 AM
She may be well behaved, but we both know that she's spoiled.

Plus, you know I love her like my own :)

I wish I could stop spending money on crap and buy an engine for Chaos.

Maybe next year.

Or the year after.

Are we going to have to play the role of the EU commission and impose austerity on you??

I've been trying to reign Bob in for years now, but he just keeps spending money....

Kind of like a drunken sailor on shore leave in Bangkok.

A lottle.

It isn't like I have made a dozen purchases in the last year that could have afforded a solid 3SGTE... Oh, shit... Hey, have you guys seen the really fancy wheels I got for Harmony? They are all shiny and black but matte in the right light... So I also have like half a dozen Glock 19s, since they are the best handgun ever... Ooh! My guitar collection is massive too... And I own both the NES and SNES classic (bought at retail mind you...)

Okay, maybe I need to work on priorities. I get it.

But the new Fender Mustang with P-90s is a super wicked looking axe that is just begging to be matched with an Orange Micro Terror...

You could probably flip the NES and SNES and buy a 3S.

You could probably flip the NES and SNES and buy a 3S.

You're right on that one.

I'm sitting on my old SNES from back in the day with the original box. It has been used but it's not yellowed or anything. That's gonna be my retirement fund.

The prices I'm seeing, I would say you're on the right path Tim.

I've modded our original wii a long time ago so we have all the games available there. Now to figure out how to do the same on this new 3dsXL...

Anyway -- Murg I challenge you to a race... Chaos vs. Leia. Who gets built quicker?

12-12-2017, 05:07 PM
Leia will break first for sure.

In theory all I have to do is put Chaos back together and she will drive... Does that make me the winner?

This is an awesome song I promise none of you have ever heard.
