View Full Version : My 92 Celica GT - First Project

I recently purchased my 1992 Celica GT Coup. I love it already even though its in rough condition at best and very much want to make it a daily driver, and eventually maybe even show room quality...

So, I'll get to it. The following is a list of the issues that I have seen so far with my car:

1. Fixed - Various electrical problems (eg. headlights work but fog lights do not, nor does the cig lighter or the lamp on the ceiling)
2. Fixed - The box that usually contains the air filter no longer seems to exist! (please excuse my ignorance on part names)
3. Fixed - The radio has been stolen
4. Fixed - The paint is pretty bad (and who put these girly cat stickers on the hood of this car?!?!? I hate it when people put crap like this on a car! UGG!)
5. Fixed - Some body work needs done as the car was broken in to through the trunk... fortunately its only bent on the corner of the trunk and I could probably fix that myself... also the hinge is broken on one side of the trunk and bent on the other... so I'll need some new hinges...
6. Fixed - The locks were knocked out and need fixed.
7. Fixed - Cruise Control doesn't seem to work - Replaced a fuse... may be fixed... but I haven't tested it yet (at least it turns the light in the dash on now)
8. Fixed - The heat doesn't work and its DAMN COLD! :-(
9. Fixed - Finally, and this is the big one that I need help with. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the linkage that connects my shifter to the transmission or the transmission its self, but for some reason I can't get the shifter to go physically over far enough to reach 1st or 2nd gear. The shifter just won't go far enough to the left to reach them! So currently, I'm launching in 3rd, and have access to 4th, 5th and Reverse...
10. The E-Brake doesn't work very well
11. Fixed - Power steering leak is back

You should know, all repairs have to be made on a budget. I'm sure many people are in the same situation...

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1AMYcOW0HI/AAAAAAAAABc/qUN_PfiDRP4/s640/2010-01-12%2017.28.47.jpg

I found out its the linkage that seems to be the problem

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1AMcwa-jTI/AAAAAAAAACA/03TVX98-7Ug/s640/Linkage%20problem.jpg

This is pretty scary, but when I started looking at the linkage I found that the joint in the red pentagon was NOT connected! I was just loosely sitting there! A hair pin fixed that as shown above... I also found that once the linkage was properly seated in the bracket that the pink arrow is pointing at, I could find all five gears and it felt very notchy and good!

The problem is getting it to stay there... I'm open to suggestions on that... but I'm sure I'll figure some thing out if not.

Once I get this figured out my next project will be the heater core... I think its blocked... :-(

Those hideous stickers on the hood have to go!

Well I paid $560 bucks for this car so with out a doubt there is plenty to do to her... She was broken into through the trunk...

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1AMilrFHXI/AAAAAAAAACs/lkwwEzEI-9M/s640/2010-01-15%2000.58.54.jpg

Because of this the hinge by where they pried it open is broken and the hinge on the other is bent badly and will also need to be replaced... I'm pretty sure I can hammer the bent part of the trunk down... I'll need to find some hinges though...

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1AMiCQAQqI/AAAAAAAAACo/Alz4agAdYnY/s640/2010-01-15%2000.58.48.jpg

They also knocked out the lock cylinders in both doors and it looks like they pried the handles out... I think the cylinders are hanging down inside the door still... maybe I can fix this with a door tear down? IDK... we shall see...

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1AMfxg_rGI/AAAAAAAAACc/u9_9rOrC35Y/s640/2010-01-15%2000.58.10.jpg

Obviously the paint is rough... there is no rust currently that I can see on the body. Because of my current budget and the more pressing problems at hand... this will have to wait.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1AMfIo5Y0I/AAAAAAAAACY/Yw9SkQXETsM/s640/2010-01-15%2000.58.00.jpg

The passenger side mirror is also damaged... although its probably going to wait too as its hanging on and functional at the moment.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1AMerDY2eI/AAAAAAAAACQ/aOQy4imXHPs/s640/2010-01-15%2000.57.51.jpg

One last thing I did tonight... since there was no air filter or intake in existence... I bought a cheapo to tide me over while I work on the more serious problems mentioned above...

BTW! I would like to complain about this air filter kit! I know surprise right? In any case, when you buy a kit... you would expect that it would fit together on its own right? WRONG! This thing had to have the hell dremmeled out of the filter for it to go on :-( This makes me annoyed :-( And the elbow? ITS MADE OF REALLY CHEAP PLASTIC?!?! instead of aluminum like it said on the packaging.... GRRR Oh well... it will be replaced with some thing decent soon enough...

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1AMbEM1jMI/AAAAAAAAAB0/gArc02cfIMk/s640/2010-01-14%2019.29.34.jpg

Ok, the solution I found to hold the linkage in place came from a computer case I had in the basement.

I dremelled (my best friend is my dremel) a washer that came out of it to make a C shaped fitting which is being used to hold the linkage...

I also found the actual clip I needed online and it is at this moment being shipped to my location.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1EYGFXmxjI/AAAAAAAAAGE/zzjbGIkuLCs/s640/2010-01-15%2011.50.40.jpg

Now for the bad news... now that the linkage is fixed... its very apparent that the clutch needs changed out...

So now my priorities are:
1. Tires
2. Heater Core
3. Clutch

Guys have any suggestions on the heater core? The fan is blowing air that seems to be the same temp as the air outside the cabin... no heat, and no A/C either...

Thoughts?

More progress...

I adjusted my linkage some more and now the clutch doesn't actually feel bad... So for now... I'm removing the clutch from my immediate worries, but I will still replace it (and possibly the tranny a little later on)

Over the weekend I worked on the sound system... I wish I had pictures but the wiring was an absolute mess... the factory plugs were only connected by a few remaining wires... the rest of the wires were simply hanging in the radio slot.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1ZvA368dzI/AAAAAAAAAKI/SqknzgSwAWk/s640/2010-01-19%2014.24.44.jpg

I ended up buying an adapter kit and plugging it in to the factory plugs and using that as a diagram to wire the old wires into the new plugs supplied with the little mp3/CD deck I purchased from Best Buy... Once again... I know its not top of the line but it works!

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1ZvBFhFqiI/AAAAAAAAAKM/RUDtJTtGutc/s640/2010-01-19%2014.25.40.jpg

Also! I must say I was quite surprised by the quality of the factory speakers considering the age and condition of this car! Quite excellent!

As you can see below... my bezel was broken from the break-in. Also the bezel around the shifter... oh and who steels cup holders??? I mean... they're friggin' cup holders!

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1Tu15OGAbI/AAAAAAAAAHA/C4oQ0rLoFpY/s640/2010-01-18%2016.07.27.jpg

Small sound update:

No biggie here, but I did find a way to secure the cd holder in place... for some reason the after market kit didn't come with part of the bracket... Still looks pretty bad though... I wish I had a proper bezel for it. Still looking to buy one if any one has an extra!

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1ZvBc8dQiI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/5rm2CA4EN6A/s640/2010-01-19%2014.33.10.jpg

*MORE IMPORTANT STUFF*

While poking around in the engine this morning... I noticed several things...

First you can see that there is some after market *cough* redneck *cough* electrical work done on this car... I'm not sure how well your going to be able to see it but that little green wire I highlighted in red runs from behind the firewall to the radiator... going have to find it on the other side and figure out whats going on there... probably was for an amp or some thing right?

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1Z46d4f-hI/AAAAAAAAAMo/L1cfrcozpe4/s640/weirdwiring.jpg

Next I ran in to this plug... which sadly due to my inexperience I'm not quite sure what it is... it looks to have some thing to do with the thermostat? Can any one help me identify it?

In any case... it looks like one of the wires is severed on this plug...

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1Z5-jrYFwI/AAAAAAAAANQ/dW6Uf4ONbwY/s640/severedwire.jpg

Lastly... it has come to my attention that there is a pretty serious power steering leak near the reservoir... I'll have to figure out how to track that down... looks like its a fairly serious one as I just filled it a couple days ago and is now close to being empty again...

Body work...

Fixed the trunk and hinges... now this:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S1AMiCQAQqI/AAAAAAAAACo/Alz4agAdYnY/s640/2010-01-15%2000.58.48.jpg

Looks like this:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_1WnhccaVBs4/S2B59qQT-xI/AAAAAAAAAQM/fKEyu-tQ5kk/s640/CIMG0019.jpg

Although now... the spoiler feels loose...

Currently, I'm waiting for a trunk support, and that should take care of the trunk... outside at least...

This is only a very small part of what I have been doing... sorry I've not had the time to update lately... I think you guys will be impressed once I do though :-)

Another question...

I recently purchased an after market power antenna replacement (just the antenna, I had the motor already)

When I put it together, I hear the motor, but it does not raise or lower the antenna. I assume thats because the motor is not attached some how inside the new antenna?

Does any one have any insight on how this works?

well that disconnected plug connects to the AC compressor. If you're wondering exactly what it does, i'm not totally sure but its something to do with the AC, not the thermostat. Hope that helped some (:

It does actually... that might explain why my compressor isn't turning on... thats actually what I expected... I just wanted some confirmation :-)

no prob, i have the exact same car and im actually taking the engine out today so i spent all of yesterday marking all of my wires and connections, so i remember that one vividly. It can be hard to get off, but putting it back on should be really easy.

For your paint, get some Goo-Gone and take off those stickers. Then use cutting wax or 1000-grit sandpaper and it'll clean up.
Your foglights and interior stuff are probably broken wires or busted fuses.
Don't use those yellow caps on your radio, unless you don't want to have it for long. Crimp/solder and heatshrink those.

Did you find the trunk hinges? I live in Guatemala and I have the same problem with my convertible 92, I canīt find Hinges. Also, my stereo was stolen and never could wire the amplifier. Colors wire donīt match with diagrams i found.

My trunk had a bent corner exactly the same as yours (now that you fixed it) identical when I bought it, I always wondered why, I guess someone tried to break into mine at some point too.

Interested in seeing how the rest of your project turns out.

Thanks! I noticed that after I posted initially :-(

That cheap radio I have will not be in there for long term... it will eventually be replaced with a nice in dash dvd/gps unit... not ready to solder yet :-)

And your probably right about the broken wires... all fuses have been replaced. I did find and solder a broken wire to fix one of the headlights though... and as seen above there is another broken which probably prevents my A/C from working...

As for the stickers... I'm going to have this thing repainted eventually... however, I was worried about damaging what was already there with some thing abrasive like goo gone... Will that cause harm?

I just need to figure out now how to fix it... its broken down just above the head of the plastic... not going to be an easy fix no matter how I do it...

I did find the hinges. You should try ebay... thats where I found mine. My trunk is currently in good working order. If you look above, you'll see I was also able to straighten the corner pretty nicely. It did crack the paint some when I straightened it though.

As for the stereo wiring... sounds like you had the system 10... I only had the base system. I know that they have a lot of the wiring diagrams here on this site... you may want to check the BGBs... or maybe one of the other fellas on this site could direct you to your diagram?

Best of luck!

Gen 5s had a poorly designed trunk. It didn't happen from someone breaking in, it happened from throwing the trunk lid up. Many 1990-93 Celicas have dog-eared trunk lids.

I'd be weary of using those connectors in any scenario other than house light wiring. Even then, I prefer to not use them. Cars have a lot of vibration, so just think what would happen if your power wires came loose and grounded.

As for the AC wires, you can try unplugging it and soldering it back together. If there's not enough wire, go to a junkyard and cut the connector out of a car. It's small enough to pocket, not like they have pricing for things like that.

And as for goo-gone, it's not abrasive at all. It dissolves glue. I've used it on paint with no issues.

I hear what your saying. IDK... My dad is an electricition he helped me do that... I guess I trust him. Like I said its not going to be that way for long though as I'm not really comfortable with it either.

As for the A/C wire... well I like the idea of grabbing one at a pick and pull... but unfortunatly there doesn't seem to be many 5th gens in ohio yards :-(

If any one knows of a yard with a 5th gen in it around here... please... PM me... I'd love to know!

I found a STUPID reason for the bent trunk lid corner. Grease. The hinges don't hold enough lube and attract dirt. They basically seize and cause the compact arms to bend out of place until you make contact with the trunk lid.

I greased the shit out mine, and the trunk works like a charm. I was pissed when I found out this was the problem all along. I was also happy, because grease is cheaper then new trunk hinges.

Well, although I've been working, I've not posted in quite a while... So I figured its time for an update... and pictures :-)

1. I have exercised almost all of the electrical demons: The Fog lights now work, Power point is back in action, and various other things.

However, there are still some lingering issues which I'm leaving for later... for instance my dome light works when the doors open, but I can't just turn it on... probably some corrosion or some thing. Meh...

4. Well... the paint still sucks but I got the lame stickers off.

6. New locks are installed and working fine.

7. Replaced all the vacuum lines... that fixed the Cruise Control

8. Flushed the heater core and installed a new thermostat... I got heat just in time for summer LOL

11. Replaced most of the power steering reservoir.... no more issues there.

Also... I installed a stage 1 Greddy clutch, installed a new radiator, new upper and lower radiator hoses, and replaced the Rims and Tires... pics to follow.

Basically all that's left to fix mechanically is the A/C and E-Brake... nothing to worrisome there.

Now its on to new issues.... Now we are down to body and suspension work and I suppose I'm all about function over form.:crash computer:

So suspension it is... coilovers? Lowering springs? This part is all black magic and voodoo to me. I need advice please!
