I reserved a bunch of posts so that this project could be sequenced and continuous from start to finish. . .
All updates will be in those post spaces.

Back in June I purchased a 1993 Black Celica GT convertible! 5SFE/5speed with gray cloth interior. It's been in storage for months while I assemble everything needed to get the project started. I found the car in Sarasota Fl on Craigslist, flew down and drove it back to Atlanta. No rust but full of dings. Interior was in good shape. The vert frame and system worked fine. System 10. Cruise, pw, pdl, etc.

Here's the plan:

Roll rear fenders.
Strip and repaint in PPG gloss black with clearcoat (just like Princess)
New cloth top.
GTS front seats.
Leather interior with heated seats.
Battery relocation to the back.
Full stereo with alarm.
Enkei RPF01 wheels with an all season performance tires.
Alltrac hood.
Alltrac bumper with JDM round fogs.
Alltrac front brakes.
Stainless steel lines.
Stock springs with Koni inserts.
Upgraded rear sway bar.
ST205 engine.
LSD transmission.

Back from paint. Not yet wet sanded and buffed. Wanted to let the paint cure, install the new top and windshield first. . .
Princess wheels won't fit :(

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020099.jpg

Well, shoulda thought of this sooner. I decided after paint I had to have wide body fenders. My wheels from the Alltrac weren't gonna fit. Hello, Toyota? Ordered brand new fenders and liners to the tune of too much. Here's what it took to make them work. You see, the vert has a stiffening beam welded to the full length of the rocker panel for strength. This changes the way the fender mounts at the bottom.

Here is the original fender on the left and the WB (wide body) on the right.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020104.jpg

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020107.jpg

Here is the vert fender bottom:
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020105.jpg

Here's the WB fender bottom:
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020106.jpg

Using a piece of thin card board I traced the vert fender noting the height of the body seam.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020108.jpg

Carefully trace the pattern to the WB fender bottom. I used tin snips to cut the fender. I strongly recommend you leave lots of extra metal on the fender and trim as needed. I almost cut it too short on the first one! When you make the "ear" for the bolt holes, bend it with two locking pliers to make it a flat mounting surface. Slip on the fender and at least bolt the top near the windshield and the one near the headlight.

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020111.jpg

Before checking with the spacer, use a plastic hammer and tap to make the mounting surface and tab identical angles:
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020112.jpg

Now test fit the spacer. Look behind and see where the bolt holes are in the body. Grind/trim to get the spacer lined up with the holes. Then mark for drilling. . .
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020115.jpg

TADA!!!
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020117.jpg

Now align all seams and make sure gaps are even. Trim/grind and adjust as needed. This is so much better to do BEFORE paint!
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020118.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020119.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020120.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020121.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020125.jpg

The second fender took half the time. Learning curve and all. The bottom rocker cover fits nicely to the fender. The original vert mud flap covers all the trimming area. The mounting of the mud flap is a little different as the WB cars didn't have one. If you can do this to the fender, you can easily figure out the flap mount. I'm just glad I didn't screw up brand new gen-u-wine Toyota fenders.

Convertible top:

Since I'm going all the way, I'm having a new top installed. Before I do though, the cast aluminum pieces that bolt the convertible mechanism are corroded and peeling. They hold the windows gaskets. The front "hoop" with the latches is chipping and is slathered in glue. I removed all the aluminum and the front hoop and took it to a media blaster. It's cool the engineering that went into the mechanism.

Seats:

The vert will have GTS seats in the front instead of the GT seats, with the standard vert seats in the back.
A few things I learned:

Front:

Seat frames are totally different.
Foam is totally different in the front seats.
Slide mechanisms are the same.
Driver side outer plastic beauty cover for the seat rail is different to accommodate the height knob. All others are the same.

Rear:

Rear seat bottoms are fleet common.
Rear vert seat backs use the latch mechanism and fold down.

Maybe someday I'll do a tutorial on this. It's not that hard, just time consuming and patience testing.

Hog rings that need to be cut from the old covers. There's approx one million of these. Plus or minus.
http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/5/7/2/1/p1010988.jpg
The GTS seats I got from the boneyard(thanks Marshal) were in good shape but the frames looked a little rough. Unfortunately the seat pan frame is different, so is the seat back of course.
http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/5/7/2/1/p1010989.jpg
Here's the seat naked. The seat track mechanisms are the same, so I used the verts originals.
http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/5/7/2/1/p1020062.jpg
Foam reinstalled. The patch is a tear repair. Just use some fabric glue and some thin fabric.
http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/5/7/2/1/p1020063.jpg
Heated seats!!! Mark the element with a marker for holes needed for the hog rings to pass through.
http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/5/7/2/1/p1020066.jpg
Holes cut (try to only cut one element), line up and tuck in, then remove double sided tape to secure.
http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/5/7/2/1/p1020069.jpg
These were fun. On the seatback the pleats are pulled back by rubber bands. You have to carefully remove these from the old seat covers. I used wire and some tape and fed them through the new seat cover.
http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/5/7/2/1/p1020070.jpg
http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/5/7/2/1/p1020072.jpg
Here's the seatback fully assembled. Note the rubber bands on the top pulling in from the sides. You can see the bottom bands coming up from the bottom. All secured by hog rings.
http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/5/7/2/1/p1020074.jpg
TaaDaaa! Now I have to sponge warm water on them and roll out the wrinkles with a heat gun. They're soft and smell awesome and after hooking my battery charger up, the heat works great!
http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/5/7/2/1/p1020077.jpg

I still have to figure something out for the seatbacks. The vinyl is all torn up and needs to be removed. This will take a day. Then to fill and repair the hard plastic and come up with some type of heavy duty flexible coating. I'm leaning toward bed liner spray. . .

Stereo.

The beginning.

Had to find door speakers.
What I searched for was a poly cone speaker or woofer with rubber surround. Standard basket design. 3" or less depth. 4 ohm. Designed for door or "free air" installation. I didn't want to hack the door. I wanted no or little trimming of the "Live Sound" box. I didn't want to spend a stupid amount of money.

My Choice:

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_23936_Renegade_RX830.aspx

This speaker had almost the perfect compromise. I noticed it had one of those stupid magnet covers which I knew I could remove for clearance. Having removed tweeters and midranges from other speakers before I knew I could remove them from this design if necessary, leaving only the woofer. Heck, they were only $69 for the pair!

Here are the Renegades side by side, the right with the magnet cover removed. The covers were hard plastic and required some destruction to remove. On woofer two I'll try a heat gun.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020135.jpg

Here is the Renegade next to the stock System 10 woofer. Similar in design but a little larger basket and magnet. Diameter was spot on.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020127.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020128.jpg
Here is the woofer set in the hole to approximate clearance issues and trimming requirements. Not a whole lot to trim compared to the SMB 8's I put in my Alltrac.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020130.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020132.jpg

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020134.jpg

After 15 minutes with my Dremel I easily fitted the woofer into the back of the box. With plenty of clearance for the magnet the woofer would not seat properly around the front lip. There was some interference somewhere. . .
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020141.jpg
The Renegades have a slightly steeper basket slope hitting the spots pointed out. A quick trim with the Dremel entering through the back of the box but a nice 45 degree shave. . .

Been busy the last two days. Removed the old cloth top to pull the aluminum gasket mounts for media blasting. Being a Florida car I'm not surprised the paint was peeling and exposed aluminum corroded. I also pulled the "hoop" with the latches to remove the glue and blast and paint.

Today was crappy out so I decided to finish covering the seats. Lotsa work.

Update March 23, 2010:

Worked all day yesterday on the top mechanism. Reinstalled freshly painted seal carriers, seal mounts and all the seals. Turned out to be a big job. Strip caulk, weatherstrip adhesive, line everything up, make sure the windows seal properly. Took 5 hours. Reinstalled door handles. Still waiting to hear from top guy. Ordered speakers for the doors. Searched high and low for door speakers that would fit. I'm going to try these:

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_23936_Renegade_RX830.aspx

Worst case, I'll remove the mid and tweet and glue a center dome in. To find a free air, poly, rubber surround woofer is quite a challenge. Since I'm not too impressed with the SMB8's in Princess, I figured I'd try these. They're 2.9 inches deep, standard basket design and can probably remove the rubber magnet cover for even more clearance.

March 23, 2010:

Panicked today. Thought the GTS fenders wouldn't fit on the vert do to different mounting at the bottom. A spare standard fender was sacrificed to see if modding would make it fit. Turns out it's easy.

Pulled the bad compressor out and swapped it with a rebuilt one I had. With just swapping out the compressor manifold it worked like a charm. Unfortunately as soon as I got it fully charged the discharge hose got a welt then split. Hello, Toyota?

Also put on the old Alltrac hood. Freegin' shweet. Of course it'll be better when I can back it up.

Bit the bullet and ordered an Alpine PDX-5M marine amplifier. Same one I have in ET. You can't beat it for the size. It's very efficient and doesn't get hot. Requires very little space and has full crossover controls. I figured in a vert having a marine amp was a good idea. It was only $50 more than the standard unit.

Man, sweet project, keep up the good work.
Thanks! Needed another project like a hole in the head, but always wanted a vert.

Last few days have been spent on the web finding everything I need for the battery relo. Ordered 1/0 wire, blocks, fuses, and battery terminals. What a PITA. Got the top completely assembled and ready for the new cloth. Got the new ($100) a/c hose installed and system charged. Nice and cool. My new 8" door speakers and amp have been shipped. Picked up patch cords. Gotta pick a head unit. Want a double DIN, USB or iPod interface but relatively cheap. I was going to go Nav but I was afraid of a sliced top. Also got some new tweets and covers for the door sail. Replaced all the broken clips in the tail lights. New windshield should go in Wednesday. Hopefully GTS fenders arrive this week. When I get them on the car I'll take a pic with Princess' wheels on the car before I send them to paint. If everything fits I'll order the wheels and tires.

Good thing I sold my VFR for resto cash.

Only $300! Ouch.

No motor yet. So much chassis work to be done first. The 5SFE in the car runs great. I'll be running that for a while.

Update at noon:
The widebody fenders have arrived! Unfortunately I'm in recurrent ground training the next two days which means late nights fitting them. I'm going to pick them up after class and begin. I can't wait to see them on the car! Hopefully they can paint them this week. Hope the fender skirts and trim makes it soon.

Another expensive week. Ordered the new top for $300 plus shipping. After much debate and thought I've decided to tackle this job myself. Expect a write up on convertible top installation. Going to purchase a pneumatic staple gun probably today. Also ordered the new wheels. Going with the same wheels that are on Princess. Enkie RPF1's, 17x8 +35mm offset. 15.5lbs each for a tad over $200 is as cheap as it gets. The fenders are hopefully painted, I'll pick those up Monday. The fender liners came in. I had the GTS seat backs coated with Line-X bed liner stuff. The vinyl was trashed and separating from the plastic. I stripped them down with a soft wire wheel air tool, then skimmed with body filler. Sanded and painted with Fusion plastic paint. Then off to Line-X. Toyota wanted over $300 each not including headrest covers! All the stereo stuff is now here except for the head unit. I think today will be wiring day. Install all the speakers and buy a yellow top battery. Metdeath is coming over today to put in some motor mounts so it'll be a full day.

Be on the lookout for pics.

The last few weeks have seen struts, mounts a tie rod end, rack boots, a drag link, a rear hub carrier and two visits to the alignment shop. Hard to beat Firestones $150 lifetime deal. Well, shoulda thought of this sooner. I decided after paint I had to have wide body fenders. My wheels from the Alltrac weren't gonna fit. Hello, Toyota? Ordered brand new fenders and liners to the tune of too much. Here's what it took to make them work. You see, the vert has a stiffening beam welded to the full length of the rocker panel for strength. This changes the way the fender mounts at the bottom.

Here is the original fender on the left and the WB (wide body) on the right.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020104.jpg

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020107.jpg

Here is the vert fender bottom:
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020105.jpg

Here's the WB fender bottom:
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020106.jpg

Using a piece of thin card board I traced the vert fender noting the height of the body seam.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020108.jpg

Carefully trace the pattern to the WB fender bottom. I used tin snips to cut the fender. I strongly recommend you leave lots of extra metal on the fender and trim as needed. I almost cut it too short on the first one! When you make the "ear" for the bolt holes, bend it with two locking pliers to make it a flat mounting surface. Slip on the fender and at least bolt the top near the windshield and the one near the headlight.

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020111.jpg

Before checking with the spacer, use a plastic hammer and tap to make the mounting surface and tab identical angles:
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020112.jpg

Now test fit the spacer. Look behind and see where the bolt holes are in the body. Grind/trim to get the spacer lined up with the holes. Then mark for drilling. . .
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020115.jpg

TADA!!!
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020117.jpg

Now align all seams and make sure gaps are even. Trim/grind and adjust as needed. This is so much better to do BEFORE paint!
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020118.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020119.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020120.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020121.jpg
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z220/92benzman/93vert/P1020125.jpg

The second fender took half the time. Learning curve and all. The bottom rocker cover fits nicely to the fender. The original vert mud flap covers all the trimming area. The mounting of the mud flap is a little different as the WB cars didn't have one. If you can do this to the fender, you can easily figure out the flap mount. I'm just glad I didn't screw up brand new gen-u-wine Toyota fenders.

i will be tackling this in the next week or so. i just pulled my stock fenders off and broke the fender braces.... did you replace these? and what is this spacer you speak of John, am i suppose to have it on both fenders? were all youe bolts 10mm? on one side i have 8mm on the bottom/

From what I remember I shaved a little off the back of the flap where it touched the car and drilled a hole so it lined up with a screw hole already in the fender. That was about it. It wasn't pretty 10 inches away but it worked.
