View Full Version : The Chrysler Conquest Saga.... v. END

So this guy I know just finished putting a new non-jv head on an 87 conquest. Ran GREAT, until the turbo seized from not having the oil feed hooked up! :hehe:

So if all goes well I'm trading him the MA70 for it. Going to drop the pan and inspect the bearings to make sure the engine itself didn't run dry. If the engine is solid, I'm going to take it.

2.6 + hx35 =

Except for the turbo being fragged, it seems in good shape, though no telling what condition the suspension is in, under non-op atm.

Looks just like that picture, my first red car :ohnoes:

MrWOT

Engine is a G54B, 2.6L SOHC 8V, comes with a 12a turbo which is a td05 frame I think, but it's tiny.

The head was the problem because of the jet valves after it had some mileage on it. Cooling system is also a piece from the factory, very easy to overheat on hot days. I know how to make it live though, but it does take work to make them reliable.

Worst possible scenario, 7M headgasket is def leaking on number 1, feck, I replaced a leaking heater line thinking that was the leak and it still used coolant. Tiny leak, no visible smoke or smell in the exhaust, but deposits on the plug tells all, nowhere else coolant can enter the chamber but the headgasket. :madfawk:

Welllll, they were booked full for today/err yesterday now, so I booked an appointment for 10 tomor... today.... BUT they did a quick sniff and it was within range, but on the high side of 2500 HCs.

So I seafoamed it, half in the motor, half in the tank, filled it half with 87, drove to sac, filled with 11 gallons of e85, drove to angels camp, picked up HX35G and misc stuff, drove back.

Tomorrow it will get 8-9 gallons of 87 and a beating before 10. The E85, by my estimate, should help bring the HC down to well within safe.

I already had to replace wiring in a few spots, I did all of the fusible link connections (they are all links, go mitsu :madfawk: ) and links, and solder a few sensor leads. Battery cables are tomorrow, in desperate need of, esp upgraded grounding. Injector clips are both broken , pinned them in place, copper showing through loom in places.... :ohnoes: covered as much as possible and will start replacing the whole loom wire by wire next day off. God it's a dog with the turbo disabled :hehe:

God help you if you don't have the manifold in good vac while driving it atm. It PUKES oil from the seals if the shaft turns, makes for fabulous clouds on in gear decel.

:squint:

It did almost land me in trouble. Right as I was cresting a steep hill to come to a stop sign, good ol' CHP posted up off the road at the stop sign. And sure enough, massive clouds are coming out the exhaust. Lady CHP and I made eye contact for about a second before the cloud obscured me from view. She just stared at me and the car though, for which I am thankful. I was half afraid I was about to get stopped as a gross polluter :p

So, going to have to rebuild the 12b and smog it before it can get the holset, it will NOT pass smog as is, going to 2500 under load to idle will make it puke. Just ordered a full rebuild kit for it, oh well, at least I can sell the rebuilt 12b afterwards :)

I'll see about doing a step by step with pictures for anyone who may use a TD series. The 12b is a flat back wheel TD05.

I always wanted to really push a G54. The bottom end is fantastic, and with reconditioned rods (polish/peen/resize/arp) they will take 500ft/lbs and live forever. The pistons are the weak link, cast.... But fairly good for cast, will live to what I will push on it for now.

I really want to play with the TBI :D

I <3 the 4G54B, it's a big block 4cyl with a really stout bottom end, fuck all y'all haters :hehe:

Seriously though, I like that engine, and throttle body injection isn't really a negative, except from a maximum mileage and emissions standpoint (it's actually a bonus from the power standpoint ;) ). The intake manifold is really the problem, it's a downright liability.

Woo, turbo rebuild kit popped up in Sacramento on tracking today, time to go pop the turbine clamp and give it a few good whacks. Learned it's wise to make sure it's ALREADY loose when the kit arrives, those housings can be a real pita to separate, as I learned with the ct26 from hell.....

Luckily wiring doesn't scare me :hehe:

My friends had a cracked exhaust mani so he couldn't boost much but even so it pulled pretty good. The body was not in the best shape, it didn't break down on him at all during our senior year (bought it at beginning of the school year). Only things he had done to it was a MBC and had the mani welded. Not sure what happens to reliability once you mod these things.

Got a friend coming over to watch (and I didn't have any snap ring pliers here and he does ;) )

MrWOT
01-27-2010, 09:45 AM
Well the rebuild is complete!

BECAUSE THE TURBO IS FUCKING WORTHLESS!

:madfawk::madfawk::madfawk::madfawk::madfawk:

Stupid fuck who "rebuilt" this thing FUCKED it up. PERMANANTLY. I'm so furious right now I can't even describe it properly.

The fucking compressor is GOUGED in several places, and I can CLEARLY see the marks where the VICE GRIPS were clamped onto it and the shaft. But that doesn't matter, because the compressor nut is on there so fucking tight that I broke the 10mm socket.

Torque spec is 70 INCH POUNDS (6ft/lbs)

So this thing is trash. Flush goes the money for the rebuild kit, and now I'm going to have to buy another stock one so I can get the smog done, and I'm now out of money, having dropped my last $$$ on the rebuild kit/gaskets/registration. If only it would smog with the HX35 on it :(

Shadowlife25

Kanoodle
01-27-2010, 04:23 PM
Luni told me is you run Low grade fuel you do better with emissions, just don't boost till you refill your tank, also the yellow bottle of "HEET" at checker will help lower emissions. So just take it in there and try to pass. If you pass you have a year to fuck with it :D

MrWOT
01-27-2010, 04:45 PM
Lol, Mario, I wish, the inlet is huge, 4", way too obvious on visual with all the adapters needed to get it to work with the stock air sensor. Even if I wanted, I don't have the bolt up housing yet, it's over $300 internally gated, + the coolant/oil adapters, and a new downpipe. No way I can scrape that together before the end of feb, don't know what I'm quite going to do atm.

I would if I knew who it was. It was "rebuilt" by the owner before the guy I got it from.

I guess it was actually a blessing in disguise that he left the oil line off. If this thing HADN'T blown the seal, it would have turned into a grenade shortly down the road instead, might have totaled the engine.

Bonus points though, the guy who DID sell me the car was supposed to give me a ride home from work, didn't show, no answer on his phone. There will be a face punching if there isn't a god damned good reason.

his headgasket probally went

Headgasket is fine. He's been beating the everliving shit out of it since he got the keys. It sees 5500 for extended periods every time he drives it, runs very well. Not using any coolant (well the heater hose still leaks) or oil. Fixed the recovery tank cap (you should ALL check yours for cracks/leaks, it will keep it from drawing coolant back into the radiator) by coating the bastard in epoxy :hehe: Now it doesn't overheat until the reservoir is empty... because he still hasn't fixed the heater hose.

No, he's either going to throw a rod or burn the clutch out first. But he's driving it like I would if I didn't give a rats ass about blowing up my engine. The 7MGE only gets fun above 5000 in that car.

85gtsblackman

MrWOT
01-29-2010, 04:50 PM
So, I go to bolt the turbo back on the car night before last, and I get it all on except the oil feed, which doesn't want to thread, and go to bed. Yesterday I start bright and early, and low and behold. The oil fitting was torqued SO hard, not only is it cross threaded all the way to the bottom, but the flare end was crushed :P

So!

I begin the process of replacing said oil line with a new piece of hardline.

Autozone has the right thread on the fittings, but not a large enough diameter hardline, Kragen has the right diameter, but not the right fittings, and NAPA, has the right thread AND diameter, but not long enough....... :squint:

Finally get it sorted out with various adapters, bend the tube to a decent shape that will clear everything and start to torque it down. Hmmm? It's not seating right? Oh wtf....
The intermediate fitting between the oil line and the CHRA is ALSO fubar. It's just an m10x1.0 to m12x1.5 adapter, no biggie.

Back to Autozone, no luck, back to Kragen, no luck, back to NAPA, they don't have ANY metric fittings :P, go to Parts for Imports (expensive but they usually have all the oddball stuff)....... NOTHING.

So now the car is sitting merely for the lack of a damn thread adapter....

Going to take the original with me to work today and try and tap it to a larger thread and readapt.

(insert grumbling here)

Well, after looking at EVERY hardware store, parts store, and truck repair shop in a 10 mile radius (catching rides and walking :P) there was NO M12x1.0 -> M12x1.25 to be found.

I checked for taps too, no luck, everything was 1.25 or higher, and it was the 1.0 side that was stripped. So for shit and grins, I decided to try the 1.25 thinking that usually the first few threads will catch if it's a close enough thread.

Someone decided to leave a loaded trash bag in the middle of one of my favorite turns...

.....

And I decided to slide on the trashbag right down the hill into a few trees......

It certainly seemed like a good idea at the time, but in retrospect, I'd have been much happier without the trash in the road.

Luckily I managed to steer down the hill a bit and wasn't injured, but the car is totalled due to body damage.

Don't litter. And never assume the roadway is always clear...

Borrowed a friends laptop to fish for a new car and so I could post this :)
