View Full Version : ST162 Blinker Problem

Hi,

I've just bought my ST162 and I love it!
It's a little low and i've removed the front bottom bumper piece. (Any other work-arounds?). So it doesn't hits the ground everytime i go thru a hump or dip.

Anws, anybody knows how to fix the blinker? It's not the bulb, when I switch it to signal left, there's a buzzing sound and no light turns on. When I lift up the signal stick a little, there comes the blinker light. It happens only for the left blinker.

Any ideas anyone? This is the 1st time I've encountered any such things on any car. Special to Celicas?

Ive never heard of it, but i t could be a relay going bad.

And Replace the shocks, that should keep you from scraping the air dam on every bump.

Sounds like the switch in the column to me.

Where does the buzzing sound come from?

I say replace the entire assembly with a unit from the junk yard or ebay. There is one on ebay right now. Something is wrong with the stalk.

Any recommendations what shocks to use? Would it be cheaper to DIY or just go to Pep Boys/Autozone to do it?

The buzz comes from the dashboard! It felt like the relay too. I was hoping that it may just be a fuse blown but seems like intermittent =(

apparantly the "lowness" of my ST162 comes from the wheels... they're too small - 13". gonna change em out soon! any recommendations?

They come with 13" wheels stock.

What size rubber is on them?

Bro, I didn't have clearance issues running the stock 13's and lowered an inch. You either have suspension problems you need to fix, or you're simply taking bumps too fast.

When you go to a larger wheel, you shrink the percentage of sidewall to compensate. The car won't be any higher unless you put the wrong size of tire on the new rim. At that point you run into issues with rubbing the fenders.

whoa, thanks for the advice, if not i'd waste money on rims and tires.
i'll check out the shocks n suspensions. any recomendations?

Most likely your shocks are blown.

Push the car up and down on both ends. If after you let go it levels out quickly, the shocks are okay. If it bobs up and down a few times they're toast.

As Murg asked though, also check that you're running the correct tire size. It should be 185/70/13. If someone had put on something smaller, like a 155/60/13, it can slightly affect the height.

The signal switch is shot or going out. You can try to disassemble it and clean the contacts, but usually you'll end up replacing the entire assembly.

wow! did you took off yours to take a photo just for this post?
or is that a spare that I can buy it from you? hehe.

I've removed mine to see if there's any short. but i couldn't find anything. I just pasted a rubber stopper (those beneath the legs of chairs) to sliding part just to prevent the stick from going down all the way.

It worked like a charm. If only I could find out where it's being shorted. Problem is I couldn't!

Don't mind Rick, he busts out random though relevant 162 pics all of the time. :hehe:

This is what you do:

REPLACE the combination switch assembly. ^^ It is in the above photo.

Next, REPLACE the relay for the blinkers.

As for your scraping issue, I'm guessing that you or someone else has "lowered" the car.
I have driven in a few 4th gen Celicas with blown struts&factory springs.
No issues with ground clearance.
Check your suspension as CriScO said to ensure the struts are still operational.
Next look at the springs themselves to ensure they are not sagging.
Make SURE you have the correct wheel/tire size on the car.

THEN post back.

Yeah, I've tried to fix it too with no success. That's why I ended up just replacing the whole thing. I have a spare but I'm hanging onto it - I have 3 Celicas and I know these switches get finicky. Shouldn't be too hard to get one out of the wrecking yard though.

I have tons of weird st162 pictures too, I just can never find them when I need them.. (like how the damn ebrake cable routes grrr).

Did you check the blinker fluid reservoir? When it gets low it'll start buzzing to remind you.

But srsly, don't try to troubleshoot the unit. Easier & quicker to snag one from a scrapper. Sometimes if you make it look like a piece of shit you're taking off, they won't charge ya for it. There's a dedicated 'yota wrecking yard 2 blocks from my work, http://www.toyotasalvage.com

If anyone needs shit srsly lemme know I'll pull & ship.
