Toyota USA pronounces it the first way, thus almost everyone in the US will pronounce it that way. The second is probably closer to the correct pronunciation in Japanese, and is used elsewhere.

Canada generally pronounces it ce-lee-ca also.

I heard Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear pronounce it Cell-lee-kuh also, but the word is rooted from 'Celestial' so I say Cell-eh(ih)-kuh.

However, do Canadians pronounce Celestial as Cell-ees-tee-ul?

Cell-lee-kuh always. I don't like the "cel - lee - ka."

Irrelevant, Celestial is spelled with an "e" not an "i". The etimology of the word doesn't have much bearing on how vowels are pronounced in various languages I'm afraid. Interestingly, in Latin the C would be a hard C, not an S sound, so if you wanted to talk about Celestial being a root for Celica, it's even more different.

If I pronounced it kelestial I'd pronounce it as kelica too. :hehe:

Anyway, a flat vowel follows Cel in my region's pronunciation of Celestial, so I apply the flat vowel in Celica (which is why I wondered how Celestial is pronounced in Canada to make sense of the differences).

Though pronouncing an isolated i like "ee" doesn't generally cross my mind anyway.

It's more of how the car was marketed. Toyota Canada pronouned it the overseas way.

I say it both ways depending on how i feel, kinda like how I call my mr2 a "2" or a deuce.
