View Full Version : smoother suspension?

i have a 93 celica GT coupe. when i drive i can feel every bump in the road. is this because it has a stiff sport suspension? when i ride in my girlfriends 98 civic, the ride is much smoother. is there anything i can do to make my ride smoother? i recently put in new rear struts less than 1000 miles ago.

What has been done to the suspension? Also, are you running aftermarket wheels/tires?

^^^ Yes please give more details.

Tires are obvious, a tire that is intended on smoother ride, not so stiff tire walls, and larger tire walls will help. Try a touring tire instead of a performance tire. The ST suspension is soft, but I am not sure if it will fit your car, as the geometry are different. But suspension is key, as the coils are stiffer and paired with shocks that are designed for the added stiffness.

Geometry of the ST and GT/GTS should be the same.

Actually; chances are the parts are the same.

KJ, I'm pretty sure the parts are the same, there can't be more than a few hundred pounds between ST/GT/GTS. So they probably just spec'd something to handle the GTS and called it a day by making them all the same.

I was thinking about the weight of the 4AFE compare to the 5SFE. If using the front suspension from an ST designed for the smaller 4A will it effect it if using it on a GT with the bigger 5S? Also, I believed that the convertible came with 14 in? instead of 15 in, with greater tire wall? Maybe this will help also?

btw, both my verts came with 15" stock wheels...

^ stock wheel size for the vert is 14. I have the original wheels in my garages.

i have stock wheels, and put in some monroe struts, and i believe the springs are stock. everything else is stock that i know of. i wasnt saying i had tuned my suspension at all, just wondering if since its kind of a sports car if it had stiffer suspension and how maybe to help make it ride smoother. thanks for all the input! i love this site haha.

^What type/size of tires, also what PSI are they filled to. Those could also be contributing factors.

Your monroe shocks probably aren't keeping up with the stock spring rate. Monroe is kind of crap.
