***PLEASE READ***

Due to circumstances unforeseen, US129 will be closed along the stretch known as The Dragon. A rockslide has caused this, and the TDOT has no intentions of reopening the road this season. At the very least it is extremely unlikely to be open in time for our event, given the time frame.

However, we are still doing this. We have just planned a reroute of the run, eliminating the Dragon as it is. Our new run will take us across the Cherohala Skyway, back down through Robbinsville, NC to Murphy NC. We will return to Tellico on HWY 68. This is a good run with many scenic views, and will be enjoyable.

The event will not be canceled.

It will continue on with revisions to the route and times.

After discussion we have settled on the dates of May 7th through 9th for the Annual Celicatech Dragon Run.

For the uninitiated, The Dragon (http://www.tailofthedragon.com/) is a stretch of road that lies between Tennessee and North Carolina, it is known by many names, but it is officially known as US Highway 129. It is a marvelous stretch of road known to automotive enthusiasts the entire world over. Sadly we will not be seeing the Dragon proper this year, but the spirit of the event will love on through other travels.

This is the 4th year for this version of our meet, but it is the evolution of the Pigeon Forge meet, which was held for many years prior.

We have anticipated a very high turn-out this year, as we have people come in from all over the country. This is an open invitation to all Toyota Owners, and will be posted across several boards. Last year we had over 50 cars all through the course of the event.

This will be my fourth year hosting it, and to be honest, it is the highlight of my year. I enjoy seeing me friends and making new ones.

Now, some of you might be asking, 'Why is it called the Dragon Run?' Well, let me explain.

We are car fanatics. And the reason we love cars, is that we love to drive them. So in a departure from typical meets, we plan this around driving. Driving through the Great Smokey Mountains and enjoying some beautiful sights and comradeship.

This year we will be skipping the Dragon, as it is closed due to a rockslide,we will be running the Cherohala Skyway and several other roads throughout Tennessee and North Carolina.

This is our intended route.

2-Way Radios are recommended, this is how we all like to keep in touch with one another and make sure we all know where we are going.

I hope to see you attend.

Friday May 7th:

8pm: Meet, Greet, Eat.

Location: Cracker Barrel 9214 Park West Blvd. Knoxville, TN. Located just off of I-40/75 on Exit 378 (Cedar Bluff.)

Saturday May 8th:

8am: Meet and prepare for departure.

Location: Old Food City Parkinglot. This is located on Executive Park Drive, just across from the Holiday Inn Select. Just off of I-40/75 on Exit 378. Yes, just down the street from Cracker Barrel.

9am: Departure.

This puts us reaching Tellico Plains at or around 10:30am. Once there, we will stop for pictures and determine running order. In the event that more cars arrive than is safe for a caravan (20+) cars will be broken into groups. This is for our convenience as well as the safety and convenience of others on the road.

11:30am: Run!

We will be beginning from Tellico Plains and heading up the Skyway, where we will follow it to Robbinsville. We will get on 129 at Robbinsville and follow it to 64. 64 to 294. 294 to 68. 68 back to Tellico Plains.

8pm(approximately): Dinner.

Location as of yet to be determined. As all the cars should be in a tight group, general consensus will determine.

Sunday May 9th:

10am: Discussion, Show and Bench Racing.

Location: Old Food City Parkinglot. This is located on Executive Park Drive, just across from the Holiday Inn Select. Just off of I-40/75 on Exit 373.

All points from here on out will be played by ear. I know some folks desire a junk yard run, some would like to head to Pigeon Forge for Go-Karts and or shopping.

2pm: Lunch/Dinner.

Location: To be determined

At some point and time after this, we will all go our merry ways.

Some folks will be in earlier, some folks will be staying later. This is only a general guideline, however, we will be trying very hard to stick to these times. If you get lost, or lose the group, please be aware of our planned route and stick with that, and try to meet us at our planned locations.

Remember your Two-Ways. We will be on channel 14.

My name is Murg and my number is (865) 773-9708

***
As long as Deal's Gap Resort is open, we will be making a detour from the posted route, that will be to get stickers and t-shirts to commemorate the event. If the resort is closed, we will travel exactly as planned.

YAY! plans for the next dragon run.

I remember last year there was talk of a bbq but couldnt find a place big enough.
There is a park out off hardin valley caled melton lake park. It is plenty big enough to hold 50+ cars. if people are interested i can give you directions if you dont know where it is.

Go ahead an put my name on the list. I will be there. Hopefully in a celica!

I will also make my standard disclaimer.

This is not a race.

Racing and hotheadedness will not be tolerated.

Feel free to ask how many folks, including myself, got pulled over last year. You won't be fortunate enough to be a local and talk your way out of it. ;)

Clayton: My B-Day is the 9th :bigthumbu

Bugs: You WILL be there mofo. Habba Babba!!!!

Andy: Bring a grass skirt for my fat ass this time so I can shake it with you and Bugs! lol

Mike: It will be great to see you and the car all one color this year. :hehe:

Tim: Great if you can make it, but totally understandable man. Best wishes regardless!

I will be there early again this year.
I will be doing an overhaul/getting another member's project running in Ohio.
So, I'll probably be there a couple weeks beforehand.
It will be nice to do what I know again and feel useful instead of making pizza... sigh.

Murg and Lady: You both made my entire trip wonderful. Thank you for all your hospitality. :)

Aaron: "Wanna buy a rape whistle???"
Tell Ryan he better get his little ass out there this year. Kidnap him if you have to.
PS. (Deep Voice) " I need to commandeer your commode...."

KT: Don't forget the sunblock!

Jaws4God: It was awesome meeting you and your lady. Had a great time and look forward to hanging again.

Im seriously considering driving my 7th gen.

What? Why?

Murgatroy
10-29-2009, 11:11 PM
What? Why?
Probably because it is the more comfortable car.

Driving his beast of a gas guzzling MR2 across the country would be a feat of insanity.

I drove a loud, open exhaust, wheel jerking, low geared, 5 miles to the gallon Camaro for 400 miles once. I was deaf, sore and majorly pissed off at the end of the run.

METDeath
10-30-2009, 12:21 AM
Luni could always ship his MR2 out to the meet, or to John's. Then still fly out here.

Hey, if Joey can drive that brute of his clear from the west coast there's no excuse for shipping and flying!
 Luni's only got like five or six more hours to go than I did, and Joey went twice that.

Now I'm starting to think about doing it again, because if Mario ends up bringing his 5th gen we'd have three generations with CTech stickers crusing down the highway.

But if he gets the 4th gen Trac done then fuck it. :hehe:

I finally bought my CTech sticker.
You know, to put on my broke ass car.

Edit: which, in retrospect, it's a good thing I waited. 'cause as soon as I part my '91 out, if nobody wants the chassis, it's being scrapped... that would be a shame, as it doesn't have rust.

nope i cannon balled that guy. now i'm running a 99 solara e153. traction is murdering my times. granted the last track i went to (last month) was horrid (no prep, terrible launch area, just all around bad), my best time was a 13.1 at 113mph. i think there is a small issue with some wheel spin. ideally the quaife will solve this...along with some really low tire pressure. and it will help with the horrific torque steer i have.

Purdue's last day of final exams is Thursday May 6th. The class I have on that day will have a take home final that I can submit in person or online (usually do that). This means I'll either come down on Thursday or the usual Friday.

Regardless, if anyone is coming down with me in a caravan (usually Turner's), I want to be out of here by 8AM Friday morning if we choose to leave that day. I want to allow myself plenty of time to drive because I don't plan on taking the Celica the usual 80MPH that I did in the Lexus the previous years. Its not that I don't trust it, I just want to be gentle on the old gal.

Probably not quite as good as the dragon, but I feel like highway 50 between Salida and Canon City is pretty fricken wicked. And there's a ton of places to take pictures up there too. Since Colorado is a lot more central than the Dragon, I think it'd make it easier for lots of people to get there. I'll post a feeler thread later.

donteatbugs
11-29-2009, 02:52 PM
its not the peak power holding thats the problem, they are the same trannies in the mr2 and alltrac. e153. the problem with them is they dont like the sudden application of 300hp when you side step the clutch. all the torque has to go somewhere, either the wheels spin or something breaks. in a mr2 the wheels most likely spins first, in the alltrac you have a 50/50 front to rear split so it takes a lot more power to spin the wheels but the drivetrain is asorbing all the power and that has to put some stress on things.

Kanoodle

That's good, because if something happened and we paid to fix your car and you still showed up in an escort again, I'd be PISSED. :hehe:

Midnight purple is the shit though. Though it doesn't look good on anything but a Nissan.
right now i'm waiting for caliper brackets to arrive, and hell now that my money woes should be well in check due to the amount they decided to pay me, i might try to swap it before the dragon

I registered on Classic-Celica, but I am waiting on my confirmation e-mail.

I ma on ST162.net as well, but since Mafix owns it and is present in the thread, I will assume they know about it. I need to post it there as well though.

is it leaded or unleaded?

yes they still sell leaded race fuel

im a member on celica-gts.com

my 3rd gen may be running my the end of january or early feb, i may be getting a running doner vehicle with rebuilt engine , ill know tomarrow if its 100% mine

if all works out my car will be running 2 months ahead of schedule, which would be more than enough time to de bug it

Grot

I would guess unleaded. but dunno for sure. the Deals gap site should say

cms-gt4
12-14-2009, 01:50 AM
I know there are a few gas stations in town that sell leaded, and one that sells unleaded race fuel. I have no idea about the one at the Dragon though. One of the places is about 5 minutes from the place where everyone meets before leaving to the dragon.

Is there any interest in an AWD dyno day for this meet? I spoke to a local shop that runs a dyno and we have enough notice to set one up with we can get 8-12 cars.

Wow I just realized this is literally just off of 75. Hell I live a mile from 275 (branches off 75 to go to Pinellas county near tampa). If I can get some money together I may drive up there. Would really suck to get stranded though.

My car would probably do horribly on a dyno right now. Misfired earlier, Occasional stalling followed by Hard starting. Entire ignition system has been swapped out, still cant find whats wrong. Got a code 12 there's only 2 more things it could be assuming that it stalling didn't throw the code. Bad computer or bad harness... Unless I got a bad part... I'd feel like an idiot if originally not bolting down the replacement ignition module fried it (intermittent ground)...

If I can figure this out I'd be a lot more comfortable with driving up for the dragon.

Yea, it's on far off of 75 at all. Try to make it. You'll have a blast!

Just 8-12?
I want to run a dyno with my two front wheels.
BatlGround in Smyrna, GA that gives you three pulls for $60.

cms-gt4
12-18-2009, 02:32 AM
I think it will be a little more than that since it is awd. I posted prices before, I will have to dig them up. This may only be a deal to the AWD guys since its hard to find a near awd dyno.

KM
12-18-2009, 02:48 AM
BatlGround charges $60 for three FWD/RWD pulls and $70 for three AWD pulls.
Just FYI for metro-atlanta people.

cms-gt4
12-18-2009, 05:30 AM
Here is the info from before. So either way, its not cheap. It just cheaper for the locals to do it here than to drive to ATL to do it.

So how many alltracs are coming? They just got an AWD dyno down the street from my house.
Their site: http://lnsperformance.intuitwebsites.com/index.html

Here are the rates.
$90 3/runs
$100 per/hr (bring your own tuner)
$150 per/hr (if they tune for you)
$800 to rent the dyno for a whole day.

donteatbugs
12-18-2009, 01:34 PM
hrm....so i can do a couple hours of tuning for a couple hundred....sounds tempting and expensive

I know. So many ways, so little time. The original will still be the best, but a new route would be refreshing.

12-22-2009, 06:12 PM
We also need to break up the pack. Too many cars last year in a row. Need to plan meeting places for breaks too.

METDeath
12-22-2009, 07:30 PM
Well, if we stick with the old route, then we can make a thread to see who all is coming, then break into two/three groups if need be. As for stop spots... well, there's that corner gas station we stop at, and the tiny rest stop off 129.

donteatbugs
12-22-2009, 08:09 PM
