View Full Version : buying a new GT

Factory blue 1992 GT with 144k.

Has 5k less than my engine, with the rear disk brakes I was going to swap to, the taillights I want... everything I've been searching pull-a-part for.

I'm getting it the day after tomorrow.

I was originally going to use it as a parts car, but I looked at it, and it'd be much easier to use my 91 as a parts car.

I'm excited.

EDIT: I'm supposed to pick this car up tomorrow, but I need input.
I was told it's a '92 GT, but I see a few things that are making me think otherwise.
That looks like a Rev1 bumper.
No Toyota emblem on hood.
No foglights.

That's not a freaking ST, is it?

The deal I'm getting on it, I'll buy it regardless. If I can't use it, I'll part it out on here.

Congratz! It sounds like a great find. Post some pics!

Okay, got paid earlier than I thought.
Unfortunately, I don't have a towing trailer (or a truck), and u-haul is closed so I can't rent one and get the car tonight.

Ironically, I sold my engine hoist last month.
Since the car's been sitting for two years, I'm doing the following:

transmission flush, fluid, filter
oil flush, fluid, filter
coolant flush
power steering flush
fuel system flush
brake system revamp (rotors, pads, lines, calipers)
A/C recharge
cold-air intake (from my '91)
degreasing & painting engine/bay
transplanting the remote start/alarm from my '91
battery relocation (stealing the wires from my '91)

Just change all the fluids, do a basic tune up, bleed the brakes and DRIVE IT.

Seriously, if it works, leave it alone for the time being. ;)

Need input on something. Check the first post's edit.

Open the hood and see if it says 2200 or 1800.

It does look like a 90-91 bumper, but it a 5 lug.

I dunno, dont have an exact answer for ya

I asked the dude to send me a picture of the taillights and the engine.
It's 2AM, so it's a little late for that.

The emblem was probably ripped off during a repaint.

Either way, like I said, I'll get it.
I'd just hate for it to be a ST

'cause I was going to transplant the needed parts from my '91 GT to this one, including the driver's side axle.
...and I don't want a 1.6L

STs weren't 1.8L until '94. It will be 1600 from '90 - '93

Erst, the front fascia and tailights are 90-91. The pics are too small to make out, but it does look like a pentagon shape in the center of the wheels. I'd say GT based off of that.

That sucks balls.
I wanted rear disk brakes and the Rev2 taillights.

Whatever. If it runs better than my '91 (which, at the moment, doesn't), I'll be happy.

I sorry :(

Lub yoo.

When you pick up the car, just pop the hood. If it says 2200 you have a GT.

Your sig.... I owns it. :bightumbu

Well, I know that much. haha
The guy I'm buying it from lives about 5-10 miles away. The car is parked about 50 miles away.
It needs a new axle and a tune up. I'm only paying $300 for it.

10-08-2009, 10:20 AM
Axle should be cake.

Tune up just do fluids, cap rotor wires and plugs. Bleed brakes as well. You should be ok.

What is wrong with the axle exactly? Clicking?

Either way a new axle is cheap for those. Pretty sure it shouldn't be more than $80.

10-08-2009, 10:27 AM
Yeah, I priced it all. but if it's a 2.2, I have good axles and everything else in my '91. I'm just having way too many engine-related problems to keep the current car up.
considering the fact that it refuses to even turn over.

thats a 90 or 91 gt, the ST has non painted trim and mirrors. This one does, all signs point to GT.

Thanks. I'll just have to find ANOTHER donor for my rear disc and taillight swap.
