View Full Version : MR2 vs curb..

I was a retard and was driving on some bald tires, got a little too throttle happy on a turn, hit a bump on returning from stepping out and all the sudden was facing the wrong direction. If I can I'll get some pictures of the damage it did to the curb, but here are some pics of what happened to my MR2. The coilover didn't seem to take any damage, and I'm hoping it didn't.

I almost flipped lol. I don't know if the back of the car got airborn or not, but the front sure as hell did.

I have never seen a rim that bad from a curb. I'm sorry man.

BabyBear

Was my own damned fault, I shouldn't have been driving around on bald tires, and knew it, and stupidly did it anyway. Lesson learned... the hard way :bigthumbu

Oh, and I was doing about 35ish when I hit, wasn't 35 straight at it, but thats the speed I'm guessing I was going.. backwards..

You say your front tires came off the ground? At 35mph? lol you really hit that curb didn't you.

On a serious note im in agreeance, that is impressive. i want to see the curb if you can get a picture. what did it do to the suspension? cant tell from pic

BabyBear
09-30-2009, 04:28 AM
I'll get a pic of the curb soon, it's on a rather busy street so I'll have to get it at an odd hour. As far as I know, the control arm, spindle/hub, and subframe are fucked. Coilover looks fine, but not sure at this point. It'll be on a lift tomorrow, and possibly a fre rack to see what further damage is done. The front seems to be okish, I'm sure something got bent, but I'm not sure how much it was bent.

Baby Bear, have you had the unibody measured? With the damage to the suspension and especially with that windshield cracked, I'd be concerned that there might be some bend. That was a hell of hit. I used to work in a body shop and have seen some cars that didn't really have body damage but suffered unibody damage and bending. It wouldn't hurt to get it checked. It would be a shame to get it back together and then findout it won't align due to a bent unibody.

damn there was some serious chassis flexing to crack the windshield. Sorry to see that dude. Never drive an MR2 in the rain with bald tires. You will get unpredictably bad results 75% of the time, every time. Learned my lesson years ago, luckily I slid in to someones front yard. Though there have been other times that were just from sheer stupidity and a little too much gusto that I just wont go in to lol.

Ghosty
10-01-2009, 05:37 AM
Most impressive work on the wheels. Those looked like some gorgeous rims.

The severity of the wheel damage, chassis flex, the fact you were going 35mph, said you almost flipped - you kind of came out of that lucky, I bet!

Mid engined cars... don't piss them off.

Well, its definitely going to need to go on a frame rack. Its not as easy of a fix as I was hoping. I'm gonna be talking to the guy that does all the frame work at that body shop tomorrow to find out just how bad it is. I'm pretty bummed about it now.. There looks to be a lot of hidden damage.

donteatbugs
10-01-2009, 08:05 PM
cracked windshields are no joke, i bet it creased the frame somewhere

Luni
10-01-2009, 09:03 PM
I still dont think the frame is creased.

Its a T-Top MR2. It has all sorts of potential to flex, much more than a normal car before something bends and gets out of whack.

We will see, but I suspect the frame damage is nil, or its minimal and can be pulled out.

He had a TRD front strut bar installed so that will keep the front end flex down pretty good, and since the only thing holding the windshield together is the T top piece, Ill bet the rear flexed a bit and twisted it and it cracked the windshield on that side when it bent.

Additionally his rear crossmember and wheel seemed to take the brunt of the impact.

Yeah, Im standing by it. Ill bet the frame is fine.

BabyBear
10-01-2009, 09:06 PM
Its gonna need some pulling, some of the mounts on the frame are bent, and the crossmember shifted quite a bit to the driver side.

Could be. Then again my wife had this happen with the MRS, a much lighter hit to an obviously less sharp of a curb. It didn't break anything outright but was $6k worth of subframe and suspension pieces. That's the good news, being Unibody the "frame" is an odd term. If the body panels didn't take the hit, some of the mounting points for suspension on subframe could be pulled out of alignment but you hope the subframe takes the brunt. It could take some work to get everything straight though.

Luni
10-01-2009, 09:33 PM
Fuck me man.

Dude, Its almost not worth it. Sometimes shits NEVER the same after a hit like that...

What does Russ/Ben say?

BabyBear
10-01-2009, 09:50 PM
They both are unsure, the guy Russ has do the frame pulling will be there tomorrow, he is gonna look at it and let us know whats up with it, and when I get off work I'm gonna go over there and decide what to do. Either gonna fix it without claiming on insurance if its not horrible, claim it on the insurance(likely total it out, though I'd rather it not be) and fix it, or total it out and get that SMG from Ben.

Idiot Stick
10-01-2009, 11:32 PM
Worse case,

Total it out. Buy it back for cheepoz, sell parts off it like you stole it, then buy that SMG from Ben, and have extra money.

If I got that SMG I wouldn't have extra money from buying it from him. It'd be a MUCH nicer MR2 then I've currently got. But yes, that would be best/worst case. Best with getting that MR2 cause I really want it, worst cause I'd lose my current 2..

Luni
10-02-2009, 01:28 AM
No you wouldnt.

If you total it out dude, youd just get cut a check for the car. Then you buy the car back from insurance, and switch all your shit over to the new car.

I mean, youd "LOSE" your MR2, but not as it sits, all your good shit would just transfer over to the new MR2, and youd "LOSE" a busted up chasis.

85gtsblackman

only questions that come to mind are

will they do it right

will it drive the same ever again, it should if its done right

when dynamic73 wrapped his truck around a pole he had to get the frame pulled twice because if you were folloing behind you could see the truck was traveling at a slight angle while still moving strait, that was AFTER it was pulled the 1st time.
