a buddy of mine has a tdo4 turbo sitting around in perfect working condition, he is giving it to me for my 5s. we have calc'd out about 80 - 90 horse power gian from 8psi.

plus the freebee power ill gain from the 7 coolers ill have on the car itself.

so my question is, how much power will the stock internals handle?
and how much power will the stock 5 speed tranny handle? (the tranny does have a lightened flywheel and stage 1 exedy clutch.

S53 is hit or miss on how much power it will handle, the S54 is proven up to 300WHP or so. As for how much the stock internals handle... pressure2 is up to 310 wheel torque or so, if not higher than that.

Granted, he is running different cams, but other than that, it's all stock internals.

thanks a lot bro....

yeah dude, to get to that power level tho, you are going to have to have zero detonation. There is no room for error when it comes to tuning those stock internals.

TD04 turbo is too small for a 5S

Thats the kind of turbo youd run on a 4AGE or something.

Its IDDY BIDDY. Its too small for a DSM, but they put em on there. Youd be out of breath by 5k RPMs on that turbo on a 5S with its torque curve. Not worth it IMO.

Pay the $150 to get a better MHI turbo if you're going to go that route. go to the syty forums...they sell td06 17c's for dirt cheap. I've been thinking about picking one up myself just to see what the spool vs. peak power difference will be compared to my 20G.

If the 17C isn't enough for you, the 20G is only a new compressor wheel and housing away.

What car does a 17C come from?

Syclones and Typhoons?

Yep. I've seen them go for as low as $125-150 lately. Plus Mitsu turbos are CHEAP to rebuild at home...I rebuilt mine for $100. So...you're looking at $250 for a freshly rebuilt td06...can't go wrong with that.

I have some run files from back when manning was running a 17C. 300whp at 22psi and race gas with bolt-ons. Then he went on to run 12.2's (?) after going twin gen3 intake cams.

so the tdo4 will choke out at 5k? wow i wouldnt have expected that......

but on the other hand i know jack shit about turbos. i know how they work and what they do, but i cant read compressor maps or any of that shit.

what kind of psi is the 17c putting out?

I don't understand your question...?

Pressure is regulated by the boost controller and wastegate.

i thought turbos would only put out so much pressure.

your saying that i can make any turbo put out as much psi i want? using a controller and wastegate....?

Turbine efficiency will play a part before flow becomes a restriction. However, "G" and "C" refers to the compressor wheel. The turbine wheel and housing remains the same. The difference in the two will be that the 20G will spool a few hundred rpm slower, but makes up for it in 20-25hp more peak power (<- guestimates on peak power there, but should be close...)

got it. thanks bro.

someone needs to make a thread on turbo naming convention. I always get so damned confused.

I'm eating my words now :) I;m trying to find a 17C for hte right price...I want to know what kind of spool+power it'll do on my car at 20-22psi and ethanol.

If nothing else it'll be a cheap way to upgrade to a wet chra.

BTW to the OP - the 17C was strapped to a 4.3L (?) from the factory, it should be a nice, quick spooling turbo on a 2.2L that will pull in the top end too. Just make sure you know what you're doing as far as boost control. :)

Good luck
