View Full Version : So i Bought a 89 Toyota Pick-up

09-22-2009, 09:40 PM
I just bought a toyota pick-up i paid $550 for the truck delivered to my house. The frame is cherry and its in good shape all around. Has the 22re with 170k. the only problem is it has no spark. Im not very familiar with the engine. He replaced the coil still no spark. Im thinkin its the distributor or the ignitor? Now are the parts interchangeable from the older celica's? Any help would be appreciated. -Bruce

check for correct air gap on dizzy pickups.

Joe (blackman) should be able to help you here, he knows his way inside and out of the 22 series engines

first check your fuses. second check voltage at coil. third check voltage at ignitor. if its all good. swap out dizzy and ign. any of the same type will work. its a 22re right? any other 22re part off any car will work. oh check ground for ignitor. it must be bolted down and grounded for it to work.

Hope you get it worked out I purchased an 89 4runner back in April and its a beast I love it. I gots the v6 though so not sure how much help I can be. But I agree with Andy

Yea i have 92 pick-up thats got the V6 but its ruff around all the edges and the frame is pretty bad off. The only thing good on it is the cab. Just so happens the only thing thats really ruff on the 89 is the cab. So the plan is to get the new truck running and swap cabs then i will have a solid truck for winter and hauling stuff around. I have a bunch of left over POR15 from my painting my engine bay prolly going to coat everything i see haha.

o yeah. whoops. make sure you have the same looking valve cover then.

Got it today its unbelievable the shape the frame is in. The paint is still intact on a 20 year old truck. He replaced the coil and it came with an igniter but the part numbers are diff. Plus he spliced the wires that go from the igniter to the dizzy idk if that makes a difference. I respliced the old igniter with the new coil still nothing. There is a small amount of voltage when i turn the key on a black wire. Any advice would be appreciated. Pics:

im not sure the guy i got it from was sort of a goon. Didnt have much info for me. But for $550 i couldnt pass it up. once i get it running i will start pulling my cab off my other truck.

got it running today. Got a new dizzy for $26. Put it in still nothing. Turns out i had no power going to the coil/ignitor. The fuse was good just no power. So i jumped the fuse to key on power and smoke billowed out from under the hood. After further inspection i found a plug with two wires on it that were cut spliced together and grounded to the fender. I pulled that off gave it power again it fired right up. I will post a pic tomorrow of said plug. I have no idea were it goes. I still dont have power at the fuse box there has to be an open in the circut someweres. I have to look at a diagram. Now i need to start pulling the cab for the transplant.

is it a small round plug that comes off the coil with 1 rectangular thin hole?

10-04-2009, 04:14 AM
That's a sweet truck man. I'd love to have an older Toyota pick up.

10-04-2009, 03:40 PM
called it!

10-04-2009, 08:00 PM
the plug that was grounded to the firewall was this one
The other end of it was two wires cut and spliced together. Im trying to get a good wire diagram to see were these came from. Because i still do not have power to the coil unless i jump it in the fuse box.
