Just wondering if I have to drop the whole subframe or will the engine and transmission drop out by taking only the center cross member out . I looked long and hard at it tonight and it looks like it may go through the opening. I want to do this as painless as I can because I looked at the power steering rack and one bolt is almost impossible to get at so I would like to leave it bolted in place.

you really want to pull it out the top. it fits between the frame rails and takes about 3 hours to pull if you know how to pull a motor. leave the power steering pump in the car and leave the subframe bolted up. take the motor mounts off and the motor and trans come up. its one of the easiest motors ive pulled

Don't listen to these threadjackers.

If you have lift it makes it much easier because it simply lifts itself out but only over 6k rpms.

Ok, so your saying it comes out through the top. My book says you have to drop it out.

Donteatbugs and VIP09 have both done this and are considerably experienced in pulling the engine from a 7th gen Celica.

Any advice they give you, take them up on it. They won't steer you wrong. ;)

Best of luck. :)

My advice: Take your time.

Get a box of plastic baggies, a roll of masking tape and a Sharpie pen.
Label everything as you remove it.
Label your baggies and put your nuts and bolts in them.
This way, you will not lose anything nor have any "extra" parts. ;)
Purchase all your fluids BEFORE you take everything apart.
If you start to get frustrated, TAKE A BREAK. <-------------This one is important.

Please post up if you have any issues.

you have to take the hood off to remove the engine. dont try to without this step.

Coming up through worked out great. I started to put the donor engine in place today and had a hard time with the right axle and also found that the tensioner for the drive belt is screwed up so, now that the engine is in place and running I know its going to be a pain in the back side to take the tensioner back off tomorrow and fix it.
