Yes.

Picked up an MK1.

1989 Toyota MR2 Supercharged.

Blown headgasket. Should be in my possesion in the next few weeks. Cant wait to tear it down and get it running.

I know, i fail with no pics. Will post pics tomorrow/sunday. Its clean. Needs some love though. Got it a steal of a price.

Go buy my turbo parts to fund this rebuild!!!!!!!!!!..pics to come.

Any suggestions on what to change with the HG? head bolts, timing belt/chain(which is it), water pump etc.

Larry's the Mk1 man. Also PM DarthRipley. She and JustJoe have a nice Mk1 they recently did the supercharger swap on with a JDM engine. They know their Mk1 stuff as well.

I have an MK1 also. I would suggest buying an engine rebuild kit from Toyota. A little pricey, but it has every gasket, o-ring and seal you need for that motor. There are a lot of things you could change on it, just depends on how much you want to spend and what kind of condition its in.

T-belt is always a good idea if the motor is out and you dont know how old it is. Though if you are changing the T-belt its a good idea to change out the idler pulleys also.
Head bolts stretch when you put them in, so its a good idea to replace those and water pump is also a good idea. I would just inspect everything and see whats in good shape and what isnt. But if you are going to pull the motor and replace some parts, might as well replace all of the major things so you only have to do it once.

Mk1s are a blast to drive, I like driving it more than my MK2. An amazing drive, especially if you tinker with the suspension.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Thing is sweet, if you knew what I paid for it you'd slap me.

The guy said it has a blown HG. Said he had the HG replaced at Honest Engine(has papers for it) and before it was broken in, his son blew it again. Said the car still started after but they knew it was blown.

Im going to see how much that rebuild kit from toyota is.

HellBillyLarry where you at?

Also..i see that both you and larry did the 20v swap in your MK1s. Any reason for that over the supercharged engine?

The kit from my dealership is about $285, but you probably could get it cheaper on 1sttoyotaparts or partznet. I wouldn't get anything other than Toyota seals, everything else sucks in comparison.

I got the BT20V becuase I already have a foced induction car and wanted a nice NA car. The 20V is also lighter and I liked how it revs.
It sounds amazing from ~6k to 8.5k RPMs

You won't get a straight cut answer on why people choose the 4AGE 20v over the 4AGZE, it's all PERSONAL preference. There have been threads upon threads made at mr2oc over that issue. Since you have a GZE, drive it around once you get it running, then throw a pulley or a SC14 from a Previa on it and see how you like it then.

Congrats on picking one up. This place really is turning into MR2tech :D

Renegade thanks for all the info. I see what youre saying about the 20v.

CelicaST I see what youre saying also. Will get the 4agze running and drive it stock for awhile. Think ill like it. Thanks for the info on the pulleys.

Hoping to get this thing running pretty quickly after i get it. Wondering if I should pull the whole motor, and do the kit you talked about Renegade or simply drop in the HG, and the necessary components(timing belt/water pump/gaskets) etc while the engine is in the car.

Yeah I think its all personal preference, all of the engines have their positive aspects and their negitive ones. The 4AGZE is a great motor and has very high potential out of the box. What ever motor it has they are amazing cars that dont get much credit. When ever you get it running agian just enjoy it. It's a blast even if its slow.

Yeah I know what you mean. Really hoping to get it running soon. Hoping there isnt any coolant in the cylinders, if there isnt I wont need to pull the entire motor

Here I am I work weekends.

#1 sign up with mr2oc.com there is tons of good info and the mk1 guys will ALWAYS jump through hoops to help you out.

Ok Blown HG. I would just try getting it running first, make damn sure it's the HG too mk1s will fool you when they get air in the system.

Once you are sure it's the HG pull the head and take it to a machine shop and let them do everything including a valve job. It may be a good idea to check the block visually for any cracks & inspect the cylinder walls.

It is REALLY easy to drop the engine out of an mr2 (it took me 2 hours my first time) if it were me I would drop the engine and tranny out and do all the work with the engine out of the car.

The gasket set from toyota will save you money in the long run it's 250. or so.

get a new water pump t-stat and any hoses that feel crunchy also look at your coolant overflow cap if it's cracked replace it. Flush the crap out of the cooling system. You can take the hoses off the engine and run a garden hose to one of them to flush the radiator and you can do the heater core the same way. Learn how to bleed the cooling system it's important.

Change the oil in the SC.

Other than that it's pretty much like any other car.

You got a killer deal a s/c engine swap goes for 900 or so. 3k is a damn good price for a clean mk1 sc IMO.

If you swap a 20v into a factory sc I'll kick your ass. The sc is an awesome engine and is pretty capable of 150-175 whp on stock engine management with a grunt box(don't quote me on that I'm an N/A guy)

The general consensus on the mr2oc is to sell the S/C and go turbo on stock electronics you may want to look into that option in the future as well.

These are great cars I have never any car so much as I love mk1 mr2s. They handle amazing stock, hell the white one I just bought has blown shocks crap tires and no rear sway bar and it still handles like a beast. A set of poly bushings springs and dampers and you will have an extremely capable car for next to nothing.

Dibs on the SC wheels if you want to upgrade the wheels let me know, I like 14s on mk1s.

Agreed the 16v na is all you REALLY need 112 hp and I've never really pushed the limit on it.

I bet even the 84s with the 4AC is a blast to drive.

Might look into that, thanks Andy. The PO said he bought another sc that he had to have imported from Japan, said his son just drove the car to hard right after the new HG was installed and blew the HG. Hope thats all thats wrong.

What do you mean by Lots of piping?? oil/coolant lines?

andy
09-06-2009, 11:23 PM
all the sc piping, its like double the vac lines of the reg 4ag. also he must have installed it wrong, cuz you cant drive a car too hard after a HG install and bust it again. either the torq was wrong, hg was bad, or the engine isnt true. best check on that. also make sure to get a OEM head gasket.

Ah ok. I know how to check for that, wasnt sure thats what he ment though.

Ill be taking the head to my local machine shop that did my 5s head. And ill check the block for cracks and flatness with a machine bar and my trustly feeler gauge

Ahh..Cant..The Celica runs, and is somewhere reliable, need to get the Mk1 running first, and then will probably still keep the Celica. I like her.

If i can sell these turbo parts, ill be $400 richer and that much closed to having my MK1 running.
