Well, I went and did it. I bought my color and clear today. I got it from the local Sherman-Williams automotive store. I hope to get started in the next couple of weeks. I'm definitely getting the hood and front bumper done soon. I'm going to pull those off the car and paint them. I'm thinking about doing the same thing with the fenders, doors and rear hatch. I haven't fully decided that part yet.

I'll post up pictures as I get going.

Sweet dude! Where able to find the original paint code with them?

Yes, no problem. I had the code for Super Red II and they were able to pull the formula up with on problems.

Right on! We are pretty much done except a little asembly and the car actually looks good. We have been driving it and getting lots of looks. Had to order a little more paint which ended up being a whole shade darker so we had to sand and re-shoot the entire car all over again... :( I'll be posting a write up with pics soon.

Ok, I worked on the car some more today. Those of you that have had the "pleasure" of seeing my beast know that it is a couple three shades of red, grey hood and black front bumper.

I had initial planned just to paint the bumper and the hood but I got thinking that since I was going that far, go ahead and try to do the whole thing. There wasn't much body work to do a dent in the quarter panel where some jackass got his head ran into while the car was in my son's posession, a dent in the hood and some goofy body work in the back where a previous owner had removed the spoiler, the antenna and the wiper, why I don't know.

So far I've fixed the dent in the quarter, worked on smoothing up the right side of the hatch and fixed the dent in the hood. Today I sanded the hood and the headlight covers and primed everything. I also found another small dent in the back of the hood that I fixed as well.

Everything went pretty good other than the second can of primer ended up not being what I started with and has kind of jacked up the hood. I'm going to have to resand it and prime it again. I'm using quality rattle can primer as the old paint itself isn't that bad and I don't have any place to spray the primer with a gun while I'm working. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be able to start shooting the color.

Here's some progress pictures.

Quarter panel repair. I've got a little outward dent that I'm going to have to try and fix. If you've seen the car you know this was a pretty ugly spot on the car.

Right side of the hatch. I still have to finish it and the top of the left quarter.

After priming. It looks better but I'm going to have to over it again before I paint. I'm going to have to get some paint stripper and do the hood vents. The paint is peeling and it would be almost impossible to sand those little bastards.

So, that's were I'm at as of today. I'll have more updates shortly, I hope.

Another progress post. Things are going a little slow between getting the kitchen remodel finished and the damn weather (WV has become part of the monsoon zone this summer).

I had some time and decent weather today. I had to resand the hood after primer didn't go on right. I got that taken care of and reprimed. Looks a lot better. I've got to get some paint stripper tomorrow and strip the vents.

I also worked on the rear hatch some more. I got everything on top sanded along with the bad area on the top of the left rear quarter. I'm going to have to skim a little more filler on the hatch and the quarter as the work the previous owner did when he removed the spoiler and wiper are the best. It won't be too bad though. Hopefully I can get that done next weekend.

I've got a few little dents to fix still and the I'm ready to start with the color. The front bumper and hood are definitely getting painted soon. Here's a few updated pics.

Well Saturday I'm going to starting spraying some color. Hopefully I can get the whole thing done this weekend. I want to at least get the bumper and hood done but I think I can do the whole thing. I'll be posting up some progress pics over the next few days. Wish me luck! :Ban1:

Well, I didn't get as far as I wanted today. I'm pretty much ready to spray but started to run out of light. I'll have to get up early tomorrow and head back out. Hopefully the rain holds off or they're completely wrong.

I broke three bolts getting the bumper off. I have to drill those out before putting the bumper back on. The front bumper was rougher than I thought. I guess that's what driving with no paint for a couple of years will do for you. I've got it primed but had a couple of runs, so I have to sand those out. I also had to adjust the driver's fender so it wouldn't rub the door and that took about an hour and half. :thumbsdow

I had about 3.5 more hours of work than I planned. Hopefully things go a little smoother tomorrow. I figure, if nothing terrible happens, I've got about 3-5 more hours of work. I've got some progress pics but the camera is taped up in the car, so I'll post those up tomorrow, hopefully with finished pictures as well.

OK, latest update. I got paint sprayed today but I didn't have enough to finish whole thing. If the weather is good one day this week, I'm taking off and finishing. Hopefully it will cooperate.

The hood, headlight covers and bumper are finished and cleared. The bumper didn't come out as good as I hoped and will need to be redo in the future. It primered fine but when I started putting color on it tried to raise in a couple of places around the outer lower holes. Part of it laid down but I've got one spot on the right side that looks blistered. Other that, it looks pretty good. The hood and head light covers came out really well. I've got one hair that I need to said out of the hood and the hood does have a some orange peel to it. The head light covers look pretty good and are slick.

As for the rest of the car, I got color on the driver's side, the roof, the hatch, the rear bumper, the right fender and part of the right quarter panel before I ran out of paint. I knew that was going to happen but like a dumb ass I didn't pick up more before hand. I've got a few spots on the roof and the driver's side that need a little more color to cover the primer I used in spots. I think it will cover it OK. If I was doing it again, I would probably use a primer sealer. This is my first paint job so I'm learning. Spraying was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be.

Here are some update pictures. I got the hood and front bumper back on but forgot to take the camera back with me. I'll get some updated shots in the next couple of days with those back on.

A couple of shots before I started teardown and final prep.

Yea, I'm really looking forward to see the whole thing done. This is really changing my attitude toward the car. Not that it was bad before, it's just going to be nice to have a good looking car that people don't look at you like you're some sort of freak.

On the other hand, maybe it isn't the car causing those looks...

Ok, here it is finished. It's not perfect. I've got some runs in the clear that I have to sand out and I've got a few other spots I'll have to wet sand, but for a first all over paint job, I'm pretty happy.

That is stunning... by the pictures it looks nice and shiny, loads of reflections.

Sorry if you mentioned it before,
but what paint did you use?

and what steps did you take, like primer then sand or wet sand, how many coats of what and how much did you sand /wet sand and buff?

much appreciated.

I used Shermin Williams Dimension paint. It is their "fleet" paint meant for all over jobs, so it worked great for this. The color coats flash in 5 minutes and can then be recoated. Clear can be sprayed after 20 minutes. I used two quarts of color (mixes two parts color to one part reducer) and about 1/2 to 2/3 of a gallon of clear (mixes 4 parts clear to 1 part hardener).

I put on 2 coats of color, 3 coats in a few areas that had the red primer bleeding through. Then approximately 3 coats of clear. I still have to do some sanding and buffing due to some dirt, orange peel and runs.

As far as prep went, I primered and sanded the areas that I had to do some body work on and where I sanded out rock chips. For the rest of the car, I just scuffed the existing finish, since it wasn't peeling or anything and shot it.

It's not a perfect paint job but a hell of a lot better than what the car looked like before. I can fix most of the little mistakes I have and including the HVLP paint gun, I've got about $200 in it plus my time.

a few tips from using sherwin williams "demension" lines for a few years for the next job you do.

put the base on in "medium wet" coats. the heavier you put on the base, the more peel youll get.
absolutely HAMMER the clear on. do a couple practice panels, hang them verticly, and just hammer it on, and learn where the line is right where it starts to run. you want to be right at the cusp of that, to get the best look. you want to spray the clear on as heavy as you can, so that it will flow out, and be as flat as possible.
start by clearing the passanger half of the roof, then the drivers side, down the rear quater, and work your way around the car from there, finishing by opening the drivers door and spraying that last on the final coat, so that it dont leave a dry spot on the rear quater when you finish.
looks great for your first job man!

Yup, I have already done what your doing and laying the clear on as heavy as possible without it running will give you the best finish. Also lay about 5-6 coats of clear to protect the paint from road debris. I didn't put enough clear on, and I sprayed a pretty thick 3 coats and there are some chips. On the front and rear bumper I re-did, I did 5-6 coats and no chips so far.

Looks good man. Can't wait to paint mine.

I think I am going to go back to red on my car. Bought it and they painted it silver but the engine compartment is still red. I have to fix where the body kit was and other dents. Thinking about a black hood, keeping it black all the way to the hatch. the line behind the quater window might be fun to make it look good.

I'm new to these forums as I keep saying and it has been a few years since I had to get rid of my last Celica. But I have to say that your car is one of the sexiest things I have seen, after I saw the pictures I went and stared at mine for a while envisioning all the things I am planning to do.

I have been debating internally if I should attempt to paint my car myself and after seeing your results I believe I just may. Thanks for the post and enjoy the attention that you are sure to get. :bigthumbu

I've still got to do some sanding and buffing. I've been giving it time to make sure that everything has cured. Hopefully I can get to that soon.

I used a Neiko HVLP gun I bought from a vendor on Amazon. It is seemingly well made gun. It worked really good for this project. I used 1.5 tip. From what I read after I got the gun, this was probably the upper limit tip wise. 1.3 to 1.5 was the recommended spread that I found after I got the gun. I recommend this one though. I had good luck with it.
