I've always notice a bit of oil around the #1 plug wire. It was always small so I thought it was a leaky seal of some type around the cam gear. Today I notice there was a bit more, and I pulled the plug wire up and BAM. A shit load of oil is sitting down in the spark plug hole. What could this be? I've never dealt with this before. Thanks,

Colin

It is the oil rings on the valve cover that sit over the spark plug hole to keep oil from the valve cover from getting into the spark plug holes... Super easy to replace em and pretty cheap.

or it could be the seal for the spark plug tube to the head at the bottom

Alright. I'm going to do a compression check after work to make sure. Thanks a lot.

when i tuned up my celica the other day my #1 and #4 plug holes had alot of oil in them. my valve cover bolts were finger tight so i tightened them up, hopefully that fixes it. check the bolts on yours to see if they are loose

Yea um.. if that washer on the spark plug is shot.. which it isn't.. you would REALLY know about it..

Well, I'm guessing I should remove most of the oil in the cylinder, correct? Any easy way to do this besides suction?

Don't overtorque the valve cover bolts. I suspect your valve cover gasket is just shot. Replace it.

Well, what do you know? the valve cover acorn nut on the cam side was finger tight. All the oil drained out, except a little bit so I tightened it down, and did a compression test to make sure. Came out 225-190-200-201

I suspect that since some oil got into the number 1 cylinder, there is no need to worry about the 225. I'll recheck that in a few days, and hope that I fixed it. Thanks guys.

it isn't the valve cover seal that is shot.. it's just the fricken spark plug chamber o-rings on the valve cover.. and since the valve cover wasn't torqued properlythat is why they were leaking.. as for getting the oil out just spray the tube down with a little bit of carb cleaner or starter fluid

Yep, bet money its the valve cover gasket.
