RX 7's are dope, the FC turbo models anyway.

Rotary is hard to rebuild from what I heard, it makes great power though. Also hard to get through emissions usually, rotary's tend to burn a little dirty. Great engines other wise though.

Being a Toyota fan, and seeing the RX 7 isnt a turbo, go Celica

rotarys are excellent motors. they actually burn very clean. worn apex seals mean permanent oil leak and horrible carbon tracking.
personally i hate them. huge PITA for me to work on and i hate the stupid fuel injection setup on them. get the celica, at least that you are somewhat familiar with.

Not to mention the 16MPG you get if the seals are on their way out...

That's the same mileage that I get out of my 91 Crown Vic.

I get 18mpg out of my Buick.

My vote is the FC.... Ffs.. honestly. Rotary turbo engines are dirt cheap because everyone is scared to death of them. 3 moving parts. Take your time and do it rite once. There are many options (reliability and performance wise) for the problem with Apex seals. The engine has 3 moving parts!!

Even so, I'd assume you have a lot of junk yards around you. Put a V6 or an LS1 into it.

I'm sorry guys but I love my AW11 and I loved my Celicas... I've never owned or driven a 3rd gen but I can say the FC3S will be a very rewarding project if you're up for the task. Having worked on Rotarys before I can say the paranoia people have over them is far harder to overcome than the honest learning curve of the different engine type.

Just my .2c

You could buy a 600 dollar rx7 and pour a ton of money into rebuilding it.

Or you could buy a 600 dollar aw11 and drive the crap out of it that day.

Phillydrift, The first gen mr2 is the greatest car ever built you should know that since you own one.

Apples _ Oranges

Were talking about whats on the table rite now, not theoretics. If there WAS a comparable AW11 that he was debating on I may be bias.

Point I'm getting at is ANY used car you buy will need work. Mid engine for some people is a weird learning curve. I don't think you'll find a 20+ year old car for $600 ready to be beaten on that needs nothing. I talked mine down to $1150 from the owner who was asking $1500 and I thing I got a steal even though it needed a bit of engine work.

I just think people are way too scared by the RX7's because of the knee jerk reaction once the word Rotary is mentioned.

In any case I do agree that the AW11 is a fantastic platform, but once were factoring in work x Money = outcome. I don't think he'll end up better off unless someone who's been garaging one for the past 15 years gets hard up for cash lol.

Number one factor for me is RUST! I fooking HATE fixing rust. especially from people who don't know how to jack a car up rite. The preventable kind. That's a big one that will turn your $600 anything from a deal to a dud.

Gl with your search colapsed. I'm just offering my own objective position. I think the best value is going to be what will make you happiest driving even if it costs a bit more than another option.

There are lots of deals on aw11s. Ask anyone who was at the dragon this year about mine, I paid 750 and all I've HAD to do was a heater core, cat and a set of tires.

Now if you can find one thats a third as clean as mine is for 600 bucks you'll still have quite a good car.

Don't get me wrong I would love to have a OG rx7 I just think you could find a better aw11 for the price.

in my opinion if the rx-7 has above 180k miles if u live near by a shop that works on them get the rex and rebuild the engine and then turbo it. But they do drink gas like a v8 so it may end up being an expensive toy. But im obsessed with the rx-7 so yea....o.o
