View Full Version : ST revival

Those of you that know me from when I was more active know that I do at least a touch of research before asking questions. This is less of a research based question and more of an opinion thing.

My ST died last summer, a rod decided it wanted to see daylight. I need a fuel efficient driver to keep miles off my dying Camry Alltrac so I can drive it in just the winter. I'm attending school to be a pilot and the cost beyond attending Central Washington University is not really conducive of repairing the Camry to make sure it will live forever (and currently it's my only functional vehicle, poor ae86/celica/ninja 250) but I can afford to repair the celica. I'm wondering which way you guys would go. I've contemplated a 20v swap for a few years, nothing too crazy, just stock to keep the 30+mpg. I could just replace the motor. The top end of the 4afe in it currently is gone as well, horrible lifter tick. Either way I need to replace the motor. If the 4afe is the best way to go, then where do you suggest I try and source a decent one, preferably unmolested. I'm currently in summer school and finishing up my private license and dealing with a ton of personal shit (gf issues and family issues) so any help sorting this out would be greatly appreciated. Preferably a pro/con list. I can justify spending more money on a lower mile, less molested motor than I can on a high miles motor (i'd rather drop $600-1000 on a 30k motor than $350 on a 150K motor).
